Wolves owner blasts KG

Posted by Greg Lee, Globe Staff March 18, 2008 03:27 PM

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor today told the St. Paul Pioneer-Press that his former star, Kevin Garnett, "tanked it" at the end of last season.

Garnett doesn't talk typically doesn't talk before games and might not be able to be reached for comment until after tonight's Rockets game.

  1. who cares?...this guy sounds like a sore loser. I'm pretty sure all the lottery teams tank down the stretch. I do recall the Celtics starting their tanking around December.

  1. I think those remarks pretty much insures that KG
will be wearing Celtic green when he goes into
    the Hall of Fame.
    Great line, Buzz

  1. Gee, the sour grapes can be tasted all the way over here in New England. Mr. Taylor, shouldn't you be studying for your lottery pick instead of picking scabs?

  1. Yeah like the Timberwolves haven't tanked their fan base by trading him. LOL dummies. Their stupidity = Celtics gain.

  1. That's allright, let's just get our inside man GM Fred Munster to slap him down.

  1. Right, the most intense player in the game tanked it down the stretch last year. What's Taylor's excuse this season? Big Al and the kids are tanking it? Could it be possible that poor salary cap management and our favorite PF/GM destroyed the team to the point where they had to trade KG last summer? I hope for McHale's sake, the Wolves dramatically improve next season, but Glen Taylor's lame excuses don't fly with me. Garnett is the most intense competitor in the league today.

  1. Sounds like Glen Taylor might be getting a bit of heat over getting rid of KG and wants to cover his rear??

  1. what's the point of this story? Does anyone here care what Glen Taylor has to say about anything at all? NO!

You people are all about trying to stir the pot, dig up dirt and create controversy just to sell advertising, Kevin is well liked here and doing just fine. LEAVE HIM ALONE!!

This is why journalists have 0 credibility and have no respect among boston sports fans.

  1. What a joke, 1st the guy refuses to pay to put good players arounf KG in Min, then after Garnett does everything he can for that franchise, he gets trashed once he's gone. What a POS Glen Taylor is.

  1. yea, pure CYA statement by a bad owner with a bad GM who have no plan other than "put Al out there with guys and hope we win".

Watch, in 5 years, Al will be thier only impact player, he'll get traded, and glen will pull the "its not our fault, its X player whos gone now" excuse again.

  1. "Garnett doesn't talk typically doesn't talk "

Anyway, he didn't tank it. He just didn't have a reason to be as exuberant in Minnesota as he does in Boston now.

  1. Typical Minnesota passive aggressiveness...it's "his fault" but "that's OK". I used to live there...it's always like that! The team lost because they don't know how to run the team- it's that simple.

  1. Glen Taylor ought to be genuinely happy when a player like Kevin Garnett gets rewarded for his hard work. That's just good sportsmanship.

  1. Holy cow. How long has he been sitting on that? What happened to the love fest they supposedly had In Minny?
I do know the fans adored KG, on and off the court.
He was a neat guy in the community and always put out his best efforts in all the events he was a part of. He is missed a great deal. Seems to me it was a lack of suitable pay that got KG to Boston. The tanking part, maybe he was worn out from "ANOTHER" season as a one man team but I didn't see it.

  1. DOES ANYONE REALLY CARE WHAT GLEN TAYLOR SAYS??HE DID US THE FAVOR OF FAVORS BY TRADING A COMBO BIRD/RUSSELL TO US WHO IS IN HIS PRIME AND IN MY HUMBLE OPINION ,IS THE BEST BIG MAN IN THE GAME TODAY!!THANKS AGAIN GLEN!!!.WE SHOULD MAKE HIM AN HONORARY MEMEBER OF CELTIC NATION JUST LIKE JOHN HENRY MADE HANK STEINBRENNER (ANOTHER BEAUTY IN HIS OWN RIGHT) A MEMBER OF RED SOX NATION!!

    SINCERELY,

  1. Frank D, you can call McHale Fred Gwynne or you can call him Herman Munster, but Fred Munster, c'mon. ;-)

Anyway its all just noise. Maybe KG could have played a bit, but what was the benefit, what was the (potential) cost. It's all noise.

  1. What may really be going on here is that Taylor now sees just how good KG can be when he has the right teammates and the right coach. It could be that, as great as KG has been at Minnesota, he was never able to reach his full potential, because they were never able to build the right supporting cast around him. Same as Pierce in Boston, although that has now been fixed. Not that any of them are single-handedly better than they were. It is that they are playing together in a way that they are stronger.

  1. Clearly KG tanked it. I mean, look at how great Minnesota is doing now? And look at how much the Celtics are regretting that trade. Wouldn't everybody much rather have Al Jefferson and the kids back? And clearly KG wanted to get out of Minnesota. I mean, he hated it there. As evidenced by the fact he REJECTED a trade on draft day. God, the guy kills himself every single day (and if you don't believe that, you haven't been watching him in green), does everything he can, and when the time comes to get traded, he has so much loyalty to the organization (and they clearly have ZERO loyalty towards him) that he rejects a trade. Only after weeks and some soul searching does he reluctantly agree, and that trade nets Minnesota good players, cap relief, and draft picks. The owner shows his respect by burying the guy 3/4's of the way through what may be an MVP season. And people wonder why athletes go for the money. If I was Asante Samuel, I'd have gotten every penny I could have gotten as well, and never looked back. And this is why.

  1. If I remember right KG has been slapping at the Wolves all season for not keeping him the highest paid player in the NBA as they once did.

  1. As a MNer, I can tell you all that KG is much missed. Taylor is a decent owner so I don't know what is going on there.

All in all, I am more loyal to KG though than the team. That is from every drop of sweat the guy puts into being the best basketball player both on and off the court.
