Bibby calls out Perkins

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff April 23, 2008 06:56 PM

With a throng of reporters waiting to talk to him, Mike Bibby took his time getting ready in the Hawks locker room.

“He’s got all these people hot and bothered,” said teammate Joe Johnson, who was sitting next to Bibby. “We don’t want no problems.”

Apparently Bibby does.

The Hawks point guard called out Celtics center Kendrick Perkins before tonight’s game, coming back at Perkins for his comment yesterday on Bibby’s poor shooting performance in Game 1.

“I don’t know where [Perkins] got this tough streak from,” said Bibby. “His stat line was worse than mine. Until he does something in his career, for him to come at me like that, it kind of upsets me.”

About five minutes later, Perkins was told of Bibby’s comments.

“Man, I ain’t got no comment for him,” said Perkins. “Whatever. I’m just trying to win the game. I ain’t got nothing for him.

“I’m still going to go to sleep tonight. It really don’t bother me either way. Whatever to get his confidence right. I ain't worried about him. Obviously he's worried about what's going on over here, but I ain't worried about him. It's whatever. I’m going to end it right there.”

Celtics coach Doc Rivers suggested Bibby might be talking as a way to take the pressure off his younger teammates.

"He's probably doing all that for the good of his team," said Rivers. "Let him be the villain. He's done that before in LA, when he was with Sacramento. Clearly it didn't bother him a whole bunch."

  1. wow this is so stupid
perkins sucks first of all so i have no idea why bibby even talked about him
second of all, he was right about this whole bandwagon thing, he is just being honest, saying what everybody else in the US/world is thinking... these fans werent here last year when the team was the worst in the league
these fans are stupid for booing him, they should thank him for at least being honest

  1. sounds like a bruised ego. It really tells you something when a players comments are more interesting than their performance.

Kendrick Perkins is a solid defender, thus he is the starting center. With the Celtics success this year, they COULD HAVE gotten a veteran center at the trade deadline. Who wouldn't want to join them? But they are so confident in Perkins they haven't tried to bring in other centers.

The Celtics do not run plays for him, all the points he gets are either clean up from offensive rebounds, shooting against the shot clock, or going one on one against a defender in the paint. Kendrick WILL block shots, but more importantly, he moves his feet, takes up space, stays in front of his man, and rotates. KENDRICK DOES NOT SUCK. He is a roleplayer on a team loaded with talent and experience - just what they need! If Kendrick was a 20ppg player, there wouldn't be "enough basketballs" to go around. Give the guy a break! It's a thankless job while all the other players get the glory, and as the theme for this team this season, he sacrifices personal stats for the good of team.

Perkins sucks? No, you're just ignorant.

  1. Hey Live and Die in LA. If we stick, then you REALLY stick. I mean, I don't even know what it means for fans to stick, but if we stick, you must really take the cake.

By the way, we're gonna 1984 the Lakers. They're going down.

  1. I feel sorry for all the Celtics haters out there. I suppose they have to tell themselves something to feel better about their own teams.

  1. Bandwagon jumpers, eh?

    Personally, as a life-long C's fan, I'm offended by that. Here's why:

2006-2007 season: Avg attendance for Celtics home games= 16,843
2007-2008 season: Avg attendance for Celtics home games= 18,624*

*Also was the attendance for Game 1 in the Hawks/Celtics series

A very modest increase for the best year-to-year improvement in NBA history.

Do the math. Bibby says he didn't see 3/4 of the fans in Game 1 last year. Uh well, 18624-16843=1781. 1781/18624= 9.6%. Not exactly 75%.

For his sake, it's good that he doesn't really pay attention to the crowd. Imagine how badly he'd suck if the crowd DID distract him.

To Carlos: Perkins sucks??? Keep in mind that Perk is TWENTY-THREE years old, and this, his fifth season in the NBA, is the first where he has multiple veterans around him who will show him the ropes. He is a role player, and he is light years above what he was his rookie year. By the time he's Bibby's age, all indications point to him being VERY good.

Everyone needs to quit the jealousy bit and recognize that the C's are BACK.

  1. Kendrick Perkins sucks, period point blank. No matter how much you hype him up, he will never be an allstar caliber player....sorry. Yeah he has a ton of star players around him, what kind of numbers was he putting up when they weren't there? I would take powe before I took him. And as a proven veteran and a player that has played at an allstar level, bibby has earned the right to talk shit. And everything he said about boston's fans was true, it's easy to have that good ole "celtic pride" when you guys are winning, but the true test is when you are around when the chips are down, and you guys weren't. Shout out to the supersonics fans, now they support their team regardless. I was at game 1 of this series, and you boston fans still weren't all that intense or lively. Just my 2 cents.
