K.G.: NBA's top defender

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff April 22, 2008 12:21 PM

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett today became the first Boston player to be voted as the league's Defensive Player of the Year.

Garnett earned 493 points (90 first place votes, 12 seconds, seven thirds). Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby finished second with 178 points.

Garnett helped the Celtics hold opponents to 90.3 points per game. He averaged 7.3 defensive rebounds per game, 1.2 blocks per game, and 1.4 steals per game. Garnett had a season-high seven blocks at Chicago Dec. 12.

Kia Motors will donate a seven-passenger SUV in Garnett's name to the Boston Center for Youths and Families, which supports KG's Big Ticket Challenge Program.

  1. YES! He deserved it. He anchored the team that won the most games in the NBA. A well deserved recognition!

  1. Great for KG. Kinda weird that he's the first Celtic. We all know Russell would have won 12 or 13 of these.

  1. Kevin Garnett deserves every individual award he receives BECAUSE he doesn't want them. He changed the culture of an entire NBA team, instantly. I'm delighted for KG and for Boston and it's fans.

  1. the poorest stats for a defensive POY award winner - less than 10 boards and less than 1.5 blocks??? Marcus Camby was more deserving and he defended his crown quite well but writers love to rotate awards lately.
