Gibson out for rest of series

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff May 15, 2008 02:16 PM

Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson is out for the remainder of the second-round playoff series against the Celtics due to a first degree left shoulder separation, which could sideline him for 1-2 weeks.

Gibson left Cleveland's Game 5 loss on Wednesday in the third quarter with a left shoulder contusion. He received additional examinations today at The Cleveland Clinic, including an MRI, which revealed a first degree left AC (acromioclavicular joint) separation. With Gibson out, look for veteran guard Damon Jones likely to replace him in the rotation and veteran guard Eric Snow likely to be activated.

Gibson averaged 5.6 points per game through the first five games of the series.

The Celtics departed for Cleveland early this afternoon and didn't practice. Boston is 0-5 on the road in the postseason and can end its second-round series against Cleveland with a Game 6 (which will be played Friday night) road win.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers spoke to the media via teleconference before departing and said his team was healthy. On Game 6, Rivers said: “Cleveland plays great at home. We’re going to try to go in there and close it out. It’s going to be a difficult game. We knew that coming in. It should be when you want something as valuable as we’re all trying to get.

“It’s not going to be easy. We understand that.”

  1. I don't know if you have tape of the introductions or where at the game last night, but it looked like Gibson hurt his shoulder in the warm ups and not the 3rd quarter . When Z was announced they jump and rammed into each other and he turned and grimmaced walking away. We were in section 313 and thought he was just fooling around.

  1. What officials are assigned for tonight's game? This info is suppose to be released at 9am Game day but I can't find it. Hopefully no Salvatore since he did the Spurs/Hornets last night. He's a homer.
