Bad omen for Odom?

Odom's t-shirts went on sale Saturday | Undefeated Photo

Lakers forward Lamar Odom has a message for Boston that may come back to bite him. And it could turn into some good bulletin board material for the Celtics.

Odom, whose Lakers team trails the Celtics two games to none in the NBA Finals, has teamed up with the Los Angeles high-end sneaker store, Undefeated, to produce a T-shirt featuring the message "Boston Sucks."

The T-shirt, printed in the Lakers's colors, has the words "Boston Sucks Since 1946" printed on the front with a "U-Man" image . The back of the shirt has "Team Odom 7" printed on it.

About 200 shirts went on sale at Undefeated's South La Brea Avenue store in Los Angeles on Saturday, but an employee at the store today said the anti-Boston shirts are currently sold out, but we should check back on Wednesday after Game 3, so don't expect to see the inner rim of the Staples Center draped with these purple-and-gold shirts tomorrow night.

The Team Odom shirt sells for $20 and part of the proceeds go to Odom's charity foundation, Cathy's Kids.

The shirts could be taking a backlash on Odom already. Lakers coach Phil Jackson last night said the Lakers forward looked confused at times.

"(There were) situations that got him into foul trouble and little offensive sequences that, rather than taking a shot or making the right play (it) looked like he was a confused player out there," the coach said. "We'll try and get that straightened out."

When informed his coach said he seemed confused, Odom replied: "We disagree totally on that one."

About not playing in the final period, Odom said: "It's not about me right now. I'm a team player. It was fun to watch. We realize if we play the right way, we can beat this team. We have to play 48 minutes the right way."

More Celtics-Lakers tidbits:

  • The LA Times gives us an early look at a story running in tomorrow's paper on Paul Pierce and his early days in Los Angeles, growing up a Lakers fan. "When you look at it, it was kind of nasty because you went to class all sweaty at the time," Pierce said in the article about waking up at 5:30 a.m. to go to the gym. "But hey, that's what you had to do back then to get to this point."

  • ESPN's Bill Simmons, based in Los Angeles, chimed in today about his trip back home to Boston and how much the city and its team have changed since he left town. "Everyone is wandering around a rejuvenated city with hoarse voices, talking about the game and trying to figure out what will happen in Game 3," Simmons writes. "There is nowhere I would rather be. The Celtics are back."

  • Former Lakers and Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry West arrived in Los Angeles with the Larry O'Brien championship trophy today.

This could be a good omen for Boston.

Don't count out Kobe Bryant and the Lakers yet, West advises.

"Everyone wants to look at him, 'Well, he's not shooting very well.' Boston is limiting his opportunities, has done a heck of a job on him," West said. "They're making people shoot that they probably want to shoot. But this series is not over, by any stretch of the imagination.

"He provides everything for the Lakers. He provides the energy, the toughness, the heart and soul of this team. He's carried the team this far. I wouldn't be surprised to see him take it upon himself maybe to try to get the ball to the basket a little bit better."

    1. So to benefit a children's charity, Odom produces a shirt with "sucks" on it - insulting a whole city of people - ummmm. Any parents out there want to chime in?

    1. Umm yeah...Boston sucks since 1946? That's the same ill logic that "Yankees suck" t-shirts follow.

    1. Odom's t-shirt looks like it was made in someone's basement... and it's not even remotely clever.

I don't know what the mark-up is with that $20 price tag, but he really should use some of his profits to invest in better design personnel.

    1. The t-shirts absolutely right given that the Celtics havn't earned any of those wins. They've been constantly lowerin shoulders, throwin elbows, and the refs have been calling perhaps the most biased finals series in the history of this sport. This combined with the theatrics of Peirce is a disgrace to this great sport of Basketball. A rivalry is built on fundamental respect, but there's no way to respect a team like this. Boston fans ought to be ashamed.

    1. OK I'm getting a little tired of Lakers fans talking about the officiating so here is a history lesson for you. Game 4, 1987, the famous Magic baby hook that gave the Lakers a one point win in Boston. In the 4th quarter of that game, Boston was called for 14 fouls. The Lakers were called for 1 and that with Jabar elbowing away. I don't remember Lakers fans complaining then about the officiating. All they talked about was the great 4th quarter fight back and Johnson's winning basket. That was the game when Red had to be physically pulled away from the head ref and the locker room looked more like Wrestle Mania than anything else. The Lakers were beaten badly in game 2 by a more physical team. maybe that will change in game 3 but stop throwing tantroms like two-year-olds already.

    1. I remember in baseball before 2004 all we Red Sox could do was say "Yankees Suck." The truth is, we were the ones who sucked. The Yankees won 27 World Series between 1918 and 2004 to our 0. This "rivalry" was like "Bambi vs. Godzilla." We knew we were the ones who really sucked, but we needed something to cheer about, so we bought the Yankees Suck t-shirts. I still have mine. After 2004, we could start cheering and, more importantly, praising our own team instead of slagging someone else's team. At least based on these first two games, it is the Lakers who suck but who knows what will happen after the series is over. The Lakers should worry about postively cheering their team, instead of saying someone else sucks.

    1. amehta823, i didnt read any of your comments when the lakers got twice as many fouls as the spurs. like that last gift...in a certain game that even the NBA later said it was a foul. You sound like a sore looser! and very little of a man.

    1. You, "sir" (or ma'am) are a fool. The Celtics haven't earned any of those wins? I agree that the officiating hasn't been great, but watch the games again with a friend of yours with a fully-functional brain... the calls have not been one-sided at all. And despite your incorrect terminology, "theatrics" are, in fact, a part of basketball, and have been for decades.

Spit out those sour grapes, your team isn't done yet!

    1. amehta823: You whine like a Zen Master, or a soft Spanish center. Kobe pushes off on every play, Radmanovic took 6 steps on his 4th quarter dunk, and Odom is perhaps the sorriest, most overrated "power" forward I have seen in a long time. He should go back to the Clippers. This is the NBA Finals, with grown men playing for a championship. Ask Kurt Rambis if he has a problem with physical play. The answer will be, "No, I wish the Lakers played played that way, instead of being a bunch of Euro-sissies plus Kobe." Now go to your Pilates class and make plans for Sunday night.... there won't be a game to watch.

    1. Thanks amehta823. Likewise, Lakers fans should be embarassed to count you among them. It's funny that you just beat the Spurs, the floppingest, cheap-shotting-est team in the NBA, yet you complain about the Celtics. Maybe because we're beating you and the Spurs didn't? The Celtics have played clean, hard basketball. If you want to get a few calls, I'm sure you'll get them tonight. Here's a tip, though: they don't call fouls when you sit around tossing up fall-away jumpers.

Get a clue. Also, Paul Pierce may be a little eccentric, but he's no disgrace. That title would go to Kobe the Cheating Husband / Rapist. Enjoy telling your kids how great is, LA must be proud.

    1. amehta823 - Thank you for providing my comic relief for the morning. Now I can get through the rest of my day with a smile on my face knowing that there are still delusional homers out there who will say anything to take the focus away from the fact that their team has been soundly outplayed.

    1. This is so ridiculous. I can't wait to see all the Laker fans tonight drinking lattes & capuccinos. Not this lad, I'll be wearing my lucky daisy dukes that say "Irish Sizzle" across the rump. Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk says Leon Powe and the C Squad...holla!!

    1. Joey, armheta, et al.:

43-16, the advantage the Lakers had over the Jazz in Game 2 at home. OH MY GOD IT WAS FIXED!!!!!!!

      Gain some perspective, please.

    1. Kobe Bryant is like Big Brown. A front running jerk who blows it when it counts.
Not to mention his attitude stinks like a big brown poop on the sidewalk. A big brown poop on the sidewalk that Phil Jackson steps in on his way to the game and then has to wipe his sandals off and then gets so upset he smokes a joint and completely forgets his game plan. Yup, thats what I hope. What?

    1. amehta823, did you really watch the game? The total fouls are 28-21, it's only a difference of 7 fouls. If your Lakers were fouled during the act of shooting, they would have gone to the free throw line more. Stop whining, start thinking realistically that your Lakers just got stampeded!

      Posted by what_a_cry_baby June 10, 08 11:36 AM
    1. Why is anyone complaining about this? We have t-shirts that say we hate L.A., Beat L.A., L.A. Sucks, Kobe sucks, etc. and we're calling them classless for these??? Come on Boston fans, we have to be better than this. If we can give it, we have to learn how to take it too.

This is about the Finals, not the doggone t-shirts.

    1. The NBA sure has you guys worked up with their Game 1 & 2 gifts. I guess that's what happens after 17 years of your team sucking loudly. And, to those of you disputing the foul officiating, tell it to your own, Curt Shilling and Bill Simmons.

Schilling - "I wondered aloud, a few times, how in the hell calls weren’t being made against the Celts on a ton of plays in the paint where there was some serious pugilism being committed. There were a ton of ‘non-calls’ in my incredibly amateur opinion."

Simmons - "They were given an ongoing boost by favorable officiating (that's an understatement)... the Lakers seemed frazzled by lopsided officiating... For Game 2, they had a valid excuse … an unspeakable 38-10 free-throw disparity that I won't even attempt to defend."

Posted by Mancie June 10, 08 12:03 PM
    1. Dude! If 38-10 was actually the total fouls called then by all means it's gift by the NBA. The actual fouls were 28-21. The Lakers fans cried to make another Lake.

      Posted by 1 June 10, 08 01:22 PM
    1. I wasn't aware Schill and Simmons (whom I loathe--he is the stereotype of a whiny Boston sports fan that I hate to see perpetuated and he writes for that terrible network) were the final say in this matter.

There was no large discrepancy in Game 1. The discrepancy in FTA was large in Game 2--about the same as Game Two between Utah and LA. The overall discrepancy was substantially lower than in Games One and Two between Utah and LA.

Why was the NBA wrapping up gifts for your beloved Fakers? The hypocrisy is hilarious. Home teams often (not always--see Celts vs. Cavs) get to the line at a higher rate. Perhaps I would understand the wailing from LaLa land if you guys weren't among the largest beneficiaries of this phenomenon (and this goes back to your Three-Peat and even earlier).

    1. WAAAAHHHHHHHHH! WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

Keep crying you Laker wusses. Maybe if your team didn't play like a bunch of wussie school girls (sorry wussy school girls for comparing you to the Lakers) you might actually get some calls.

Why don't you Laker wussies whine about Fisher tackling Brent Barry?? Oh, that went your way.

When you get your @ss kicked, whine about the refs!

    1. In my opinion those Lakers are the best club since the Pat Riley teams. Pat was an attractive man with a handsome head of hair. Speaking of hair, the afro was a great look and highly under rated. Does Sam Cassel frighten anyone else but me? The man's an alien. Just a thought; Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard sing the National Anthem together! There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house. BTW, Anyone want to buy a house?

    1. Nice ploy, Gary. "We'll make accusations, and then if you defend against them, they must be true because you're defensive!" I guess you said the same to fellow Lakers fans after Game 2 with Utah, admonishing them that the series ought to be 1-1. Right?

Posted by ML June 10, 08 05:27 PM
    1. I guess the refs allowed Powe to go coast to coast at the beginning of the 3rd quarter while the Laker players stood there and showed him the way to the basket.

That play sums up a losers effort.

The Lakers have overachieved this year.

      Be happy with it.

Sore losers and their theories sound pathetic.

What if David Stern wants to prove you wrong, and lets the Celtics sweep?
