Blog Wars, part deux
In our second installment of the blog war between the Globe and the LA Times, Brian Kamenetzky and I debate today's topic:
Topic No. 2: Who should America be rooting for in the NBA Finals?
Gary Dzen, Boston Globe:
It's inevitable.
In the leadup every sport's championship, bandwagon fans come out of the woodwork to swear their allegiance to one side or the other. During the Super Bowl, it was everybody against the Patriots (the Super Bowl is the NFL's championship game, in case someone is reading this from Los Angeles). During the last World Series, people attached themselves to those loveable, huggable Red Sox.
And so it goes.
Putting our prognosticating glasses on, it's easy to see how the Celtics would win over a nation of wannabe basketball fans during the NBA Finals.
Start with KG, whose intensity has earned him a cult following. It's impossible not to like Kevin Garnett if he's playing for your team. KG will draw people in, no doubt.
Besides Garnett, the Celtics have plenty of other guys who fans will want to root for. Ray Allen is a smooth-talking, smooth-shooting class act. Paul Pierce has never abandoned his home team and has never asked for a trade.
Rajon Rondo tries like heck on every play. Leon Powe and Glen Davis bring lunch pails into the paint. Eddie House alternates between nailing three-pointers and standing on the bench to cheer for his teammates on every possession.
There's also this little issue of what would be good for the NBA. The league needs the Celtics to be good. Boston has revitalized professional basketball on the East Coast this season, and lord knows the Knicks and Sixers aren't going to be of any help for a while. When the Celtics are good, the NBA is marketable to an entire region of the country.
And then there's this: Kobe can market the Lakers by himself. The league's most popular player doesn't need rings for people to watch him. But if he loses, it's just another reason for the country to cheer. People love seeing an MVP, but there's nothing people love more than seeing an MVP fail.
Despite making my living on the Internet, I’m not a big believer in conspiracy theories.
Yes, these playoffs have seen some controversies favoring the Lakers and Celtics. No punishment for KG after his shove-in with Eddie Rush in the Atlanta series. (A good call by the NBA. Just because they freaked out during the Phoenix-San Antonio series doesn’t mean they have to compound the error by sticking to precedent.) No call on Brent Barry at the end of Game 4. (A bad call, but the refs botched the previous play and besides, at that point in a game players have to maul each other like hungry pumas to force a whistle. Had the famous McHale clothesline of Kurt Rambis happened in the last six seconds of the fourth, it probably wouldn’t have been called.) Whatever. The two best teams in the NBA made it to the Finals, as it should be.
Obviously, Bostonians are pulling for the green, while LA is all purple and gold. But the rest of America has a choice to make. Who should they want to see hoist the Larry O’Brien?
The answer, and I’m not just saying this to keep my apartment from getting egged, is the Lakers. Here are a few reasons why:
Have an opinion on this? Sound off in our comments forum.

Go Lakers
waaaait. .. . .didn't paul pierce ask to be traded before the KG and Allen trades?
shambles...really? try 24 wins...that is shambles my friend. the team is remade with the greatest single season turn around in NBA history and that's not the cinderella story? we should route for a team where the star didn't want to be there and now that they pulled off the "trade" for pau gasol everything is ok now. i'll take the intensity of KG and the worst to first over the crybaby star thanks.
Didn't Kobe Bryant get charged for raping someone? Hmmmm, something makes me think that he's going to be the sole reason why people root against the Lakers. He may be an MVP, but he cheated on his wife, threw Shaq under the bus, and is still not liked by most.
8 pairs of shoes per game: 4 games would be 32 pairs minimum. and 7 games would be 56 pairs maximun. Do the math?
Tyler-
24 wins = just a lame, boring season. A huge trade brought Boston 2 superstars, but thats no where close as to the dramatic story the Lakers have gone through since last season. Kobe always wanted to be in L.A., but he demanded to leave because there was no help around him. Crybaby star? Paul Pierce demanded help last year too.
Why are there only 4 comments? Is this blog not as big as it is hyped up to be?
I don't like Derek Fisher and I'm not ashamed of myself. It's fitting that that guy is named after a fish because he's the biggest flopper in the NBA.
"Love me or hate me, it's one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fadeaway, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. [An MVP] Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved, for the exact same thing" - Kobe Bryant
The deer in the headlights look.......that is all you get from your big 3 at the end of a game.
There is a reason they have not won a championship this far into their careers; THEY ARE CHOKERS WHEN IT COUNTS.
When asked, "who should take the last shot at the end of the game?"; KG and PP both replied Ray Allen, and Ray replied the open guy!! What a bunch of #2's!!
Any SUPERSTAR would want the rock. Good luck in the clutch.
Go Lakers
Lakers winning the championship is a Hollywood ending to a storybook season. "Nuff said!
Looks like Celtics fans can not anymore think of issues to hurl against Kobe but personal ones. You probably realize by now that your Celtics team can not beat Kobe in basketball.
Celtics Sucks!!!!!!!!
Go Lakers
I'm a Celtics fan and tried to be objective when reading the cases of both blogs. The L.A. blogger is grasping for straws and his reasons are almost all weak. Good weather? Jack Nicholson? The inner turmoil--caused by Kobe's whining in public? These are the reasons why people should root for the Lakers?
Like Ray Bourque with the Avalanche, I'll be rooting hard not just for the green and white laundry, but because players like Paul Pierce, KG, and Ray Allen should have rings. And because the Celtics have stunk for so long and Boston fans have been waiting for this for over twenty years. (And besides, Kobe already has three rings!) And the West has dominated the NBA for so long that it's time for an East Coast team to have the limelight.
Post #4....Yeah ...OK Why do haters gotta bring up personal issues when this has nothing to do with basketball? ! Get over it!!! You and like most people are the same hypocrites who root for MJ; who BTW, was by no means, a saint. Jordan too had issues he had to deal with such as infedelity, was a poor teammate--punching out Steve Kerr and Will Perdue, gambiling issues, etc.
Unlike Kobe, Jordan benefited from his era because he wasn't overexposed in the media as it is today (such as the Internet). Jordan even said himself, with the overexposed media outlets today, he wouldn't be able to cope with the publicized personal issues atheletes deal with today.
So so-called "sports" fans like yourself need to get over this and recognize athletes, such as Kobe Bryant, for their talent/skill or game and not their personal issues. Yeah "fans" of the game who root against Kobe (in the context of the game) because he's a rapist, makes such a "great" argument doesn't it?! Just shows you how much you respect the game itself, the athletes and their skills.
I can appreciate Kamenetzky (LA Times) supporting his team, however, if memory serves me correctly, it was the Celts that won 66 games this year. If I had a choice between Kobe and LeBron, I'll take LeBron. LeBron is not only a better player but a better athlete. LeBron is a TEAM player. Kobe is a KOBE player. Ask O'Neal! If the Celts can stop LeBron, they can stop Kobe. Cleveland, Detroit and the Celts are all better defensive teams than LA. The Celts won both series with defense. They'll do the same with LA, only in this series, Ray Allen won't be shooting 20% from the field. Key player- Kendrick Perkins. Celts in six!
his nickname is that of a deadly snake. kobe sux. karma is a b*tch. CELTICS IN 4
Game 1: Lakers 105, Celtics 97
Game 2: Celtics 102, Lakers 100
Game 3: Lakers 117, Celtics 93
Game 4: Lakers 103, Celtics 99
Game 5: Lakers 121, Celtics 95
Lakers in 5! Is that a series or a rout?
It doesn't exactly feel worth a lot to try to counter a random set of reaching rationalizations that try to support the idea that justice will be served with a Laker victory in the Finals.
The Celtics' history, team character and the deserving reward for threesome of Pierce Garnett and Allen will earn the greatest public satisfaction, if the Celts can win. And that does not even mention the case against Phil Jackson getting another championship, to keep Red Auerbach's coaching stature unquestioned and his legendary standing as the incomparable people genius who made the NBA what it is.
The Celts played the Lakers and Spurs each twice this year The Celts WON ALL FOUR games. The Lakers by an average of 12 1/2 points. Beating the Spurs isn't any great accomplishment. That's why the Spurs are in the process of dismantling their team! Duncan played the whole Lakers series as is the first time he had seen a basketball was 10 minutes before each game. MR. YAN, The stats prove that Ray Allen is one of the greatest shooters in NBA history! Maybe you missed it but, the announcers of the two Celts series made that observation about 50 times while Allen was in his drought. If you wanted one player to take the "last shot of the game," Are you telling me that me that you wouldn't want one of the greatest shooters in NBA history to take that shot? Duh!!!
AJAX! You're right!!! Paul Pierce did ask for help. Any player with a fully developed brain would. However, Pierce didn't WHINE AND ASK TO BE TRADED AS KOBE DID!!! Kobe is all about Kobe. That's why the Lakers couldn't beat the Celts during the regular season. That's why they won't beat the Celts in this series. JOHN LAKERS, Let me know how your swagger is on June 17. About midnight! EDT of course! Celts in 6.
First of all, the reason that none of these three players from Boston have ever won a champion ship is NOT because they arent up for it in the clutch, it is becuase they have never ahd a good enough team around them. And number 9, Myran, you must be the dumbest sports fan on the face of the planet. Ray Allen is argueably the greatest pure shooter in NBA history. Why would you not want him to shoot the open shot for the win???
The celtics won 24 games alst season, and won an amazing 66 this season to have the biggest turn-around in NBA history. Danny Ainge finally earned his pay check by miraculously signing KG and Allen and giving them an essential core group of role players that includes journey man James posey, sharp shooter Eddie House, and Sam Cassell. And they may not be the best players off the bench, who does LA have??? Sasha Vujacic who lived with his mother until the Lakers signed him and he was forced to leave her womb. Come on!! Jordan Farmar..hahaha need I say more?
Also to the number 6 comment by Tyler, No shit it was not as dramtic as what the Lakers have done. they are all babies than cry and whine when they do not get what they want. Kobe is a little girl and asks for something new every season. He dosnt want to be LA, he dosnt care where he is as long as he makes his millions, makes it to the Finals and gets his 30+ point a game.
Paul Pierce has only once in his career asked for a trade. And it was not like he begged or threatened to leave. He knows hes towrds the latter part of his career and asked for some players that are established in the league, not rookies that will eventually be okay players in the league. He simply said, get me some seasoned vets or please send me somewhere to win.
Number 11 comment, your worst than Mryan. The celtics beat the Lakers, including Kobe, twice this season. Holding the star to under 34 percent shooting. All you LA fans need to look up your stats before you blog your worthless input on this site.
The Lakers are not good enough to beat the Celtics at home nor are they good enough to win this series. Kobe Bryant may be one of the most proliffic scorers in NBA history, but when it comes down to it, he is a b.i.t.c..... He raped a woman a few years back, he ran Shaq out of LA, complained every year the management, and has never ever kept his mouth shut in his career. There will never be a player like that in Boston, Red's ghost will not allow it to happen.
All in all, No one has a good enough point of view for the Lakers to take another ring, and the Celtics are simply better in every category except offense. o0o0o0o... big whoopdi-do! Boston has the best defense in the NBA, leading the league in points allowed per game (regular and post-season), three point % (reg. and post-season) and also shotting percent (reg and post-season).
Plain and simple, Offense wins games, but DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!
BOSTON WILL WIN. MARK THESE WORDS!!!!!
No Paul Pierce NEVER asked to be traded
Sports fan, your an idiot. Noone at all questions his basketball skills, and he is obviously the best player in the sieries, and possibly the NBA, but personal issues by all means count in who you root for. You would have to be a complete and total idiot not to realize that. If David Ortiz went around raping girls, shooting up coke, and flipping people off, trust me we would not root for him. He does not respect the game as you want to say because as a representitve, and one of the faces of the game, he shamlessly raped a young girl. He is not a great person, and if he respected the game he would reflect it in his off field actions.
Lets be honest, until this year, NO ONE in Boston cared about the NBA. I went to a Lakers/Celtics game in 2004, openly cheered for LA, my hometown, openly jeered the C's, and except for one annoyed woman, no one bothered me. What a let down. No insults, no threats, nothing. Try that at a Red Sox/Yankees game. This thing means way more to LA fans, and Laker fans around the country, then it does here in Boston where Red Sox Nation is 24/7 and the Patriots bandwagon is just behind it. We want it, the team wants it, and Kobe wants it. The best story line is Paul Pierce, a born and bred Laker fan from Inglewood. Figures it would take an LA guy to lead a Boston team to success!
Do not forget the Celtics smashed through the West this year. The Celtics are a nightmareish matchup for the Lakers. Gasol come on Perkins will push him around and tire him out. Kobe has to do it by himself and that will not happen
i think the thing i'll hate most about kobe isn't his swagger, or his MVP, or the fact he's a veteran...i think what i'll hate most is the fact he threw current and former teammates under the bus, demanded a trade (unlike pierce, who after a 24 win season just wanted some help...who wouldn't?), and then was gift-wrapped a teammate for 30 cents on the dollar that if he didn't have, wouldn't have stood a chance in the playoffs...oh yeah, and he raped a girl in colorado, be sure to hide the women in boston come thursday
Sportsfan - I know Jordan was not a saint. He had a gambling problem. Lots of people have gambling problems. They can seek help through gamblers anonymous and counseling. Kobe sexually assaults women. Lots of people have sexually assaulting women problems. They can seek help during their stint in prison. Big difference. Terrible comparison by you.
Besides, the article is about who the rest of America will root for. #4 brought up a good point. People tend not to root for guys with history of sexual aggression. You don't see a big groundswell of support for Mike Tyson to get back into boxing, do you?
How can anyone root for Kobe? Yes, he's got stats - he's also a bad man - and I mean bad as in bad, not good. :)
OK I have to admit I grew up a Celtics hater. We had a beautiful team with Showtime and they played basketball the way it was "supposed" to be played with grace poise, passing and speed. Magic Johnson running the break was and will always be one of the most beautiful things to witness on a basketball court.......then we ran into the "thugs" who played basketball like it was played in the school yard. I hated them all. However, they won and earned my respect......but I still hated them. Later I had the opportunity to go to a few games at the Garden and my respect for the organization and fans grew. (my hate moved down a notch to dislike) It really is great to see the Celts back in the finals (finally) Now to reality. Neither of these teams would stand a chance against the old Celtics and Lakers squads, but that does not matter. What will determine this series will be which Celtics team shows up and whether they can sustain it for 7 games. If the team that closed out Detroit (thank you I hate them even more than the Celtics) do they have a chance to win in 6-7 games, if not they will be done in 5-6. Either way it will be a great series for basketball and both cities. All I can say is that you better hope you win it this year cause next year with Bynum back with a more experienced team it’s going to be a run of 3 years for the Lakers.
SportsFan, you're basically saying that even though Pete Rose, the all-time hits leader and probably the greatest hustle player of all time, gambled on Major League Baseball and had some serious personal issues, should be looked at strictly in baseball terms and his personal issues should have nothing to do with it? The question is who would America want to win, not who's a better basketball player. Clearly Kobe is the best player in this series; you'd be a fool to try and argue otherwise. But that doesn't mean his less than perfect personal track record plays no role in deciding his image to the rest of America. Carmelo Anthony's a great player too; unfortunately he's the poster child for what wasted talent looks like - getting in fights, DUI's, etc. Kobe, although a much better player, is painted in a similar picture thanks to his incessant whining and rape trial, and no Laker fan can argue otherwise, making the Celtics the clear sentimental favorite.
yeah dude, the celtics are gunna let the lakers score 100 in every single game...im really glad we have nostrodamus predicting the series before a single game has taken place
hey bobby boy, now correct me if im wrong, but paul pierce was on that celtic team you went to see your beloved lakers play against, and apparently no one cared then because they weren't that great...it took a TEAM effort, something Kobe + the Rape-ettes would know nothing about...the celts beat up on the lakers when they had a much more physical center (Bynum) compared to this euro-trash named gasol...celts in 6
Richard you have your facts all wrong. The Kobe you're talking about is last seasons Kobe. This season's Kobe is a team player. That's why the Lakers had the best record in the West. That's why the Lakers steamrolled through the playoffs. That's why Kobe's MOST VALUABLE PLAYER! There's alot more games where the starters have double-digit points this season then last season. All the Kobe-haters need to realize that he's matured, and need to get over his antics of earlier this season.
Beantown is in for a rude awakening. The Lakers are more dangerous than ANY team the Celtics (actually you say it "Keltics") have seen during these playoffs. Having to go 7 games to beat the Hawks is pathetic. If I were a Keltic fan, I would be concerned about the irratic play of the Keltics. They have talent, a great player in KG, BUT.........Pierce is mentally weak and the Keltics will have to play perfectly if they want to win it all. I see the Lakers winnning one of the first two in Beantown and then going for the kill in L.A.
LAKER NATION RULES!!!
no, the lakers had the best record in the west thanks to Chris Wallace giving them Pau Gasol...they were one game over .500 before getting Gasol, so apparently Kobe wasn't the savior by himself...and Chris Paul was infinitely more valuable to this team, Kobe was the best player in the league (and yes, there is a difference)
Pierce is mentally weak...yeah, thats why he had 4,1 the critical loose ball in which he beat Lebron to the spot in game 7, and the final free throws to put the series away against the Cavs, then scored 29 on the road, 12 in the fourth quarter after a ridiculous offenseive foul call where he didn't lose his cool, just went out and buried the Pistons...but no, you're right, definetly mentally weak you moron
Celtics can't beat Kobe? Didn't he play the two games this season? Celtics are chokers. Ask the Pistons about that. Personally I expect this kind of garbage from Lakers fans. After all when was the last time the city had anything to crow about besides the Lakers? You can't even keep a pro football team.
How is a team with Doc Rivers at the helm, going to defeat a Jackson coached team who has been through every conceivable playoff situation? The answer is he is not. Celtic Bandwagon fraud fans notwithstanding, this series will be determined by matchups and adjustments, and Phil is light years ahead of Doc, who looks clueless. There is a reason KG has not won a title, and Allen, and as for Pierce, let's see how he performs when it counts in his hometown. If he plays bad, I can't wait for the Celtic faux fans to say it is a conspiracy because he is still a closet Laker fan. This is every Laker fans dream, a chance to beat Boston and their newly discovered faux fan base (bandwagon) have Phil pass Auerbach, make Bill Simmons cry, and have Kobe hold up the Larry Obrien Trophy.
KG is to the NBA as Peyton is to the NFL. Everybody wanted Peyton to win the SB as he did, Now everybody is gonna be rooting for KG to finally get his. KG is the face of the NBA and has been for a long time. Nobody deserves the ring more than he does. Celtics are the better defensive team and have players that can score. Offense puts fans in the stands, but defense wins the game. This is probably C's only chance there gonna win. C's win in 6. Laker fans don't fret, for you will win it next year.
It's human nature for people to root for the best teams and the best teams normally are the winners. The Celtics in particular and Boston in general right now has almost all the best teams in major sports. Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics...even the Revolution are now perennial contenders for the MLS championship. Except for hockey (which isn't a major sport anymore) Boston rules. People love that. America loves that. Our sports teams and their organiations are admired and copied with great envy by everyone. What's admired about LA. Ha! Exactly! Maybe good weather. Who wants to root for Kobe..I hate that SOB.
The Celts will "BEAT LA" like a rented mule
for all you clowns that continue to bash Kobe for colorado why don't you get all the facts straight and check out the chick involved. and of course, no one in any sports cheats on their wife or cheats in general (look in your backyard with your patriot coach bilicheat). and please stop with your defense argument. 37 win altanta and 45 win cleveland took your vaunted team and it's defense to seven games. hey maybe it's not your defense, but that your offense is offensive, it down right sucks. your boston three "partly" can't get it in the hole. (maybe three "partly's" can make one complete kobe) and which one of those three partly's wants (not ends up with) but WANTS to take that last shot. NO GO TO GUY. Instead of asking the nation, let's just ask boston who they'll root for... I can hear the results roaring in .... that boston crowd chanting MVP, MVP, MVP it's unanimous LA and boston are pulling for the Lakers. Be the Bamboo "Bend But Do Not Break" Laker Fans Feeling You!!! Lakers in 5. boston's inability to win on the road will kill them with the 2-3-2 format. (It's at least nice to see you in the playoffs again as short lived as it will be) Scary Thought for the rest of the league... we'll be even better next year. (listening to tommy heinsohn on the replays is like fingernails on a chalkboard.)
LA's arguments are unbelievably weak... he should've just conceded this one. Jack Nicolson? Parades? We're talking about the championship pal!!!! Not the fans or what happens after.
Hey KyRoLI Hey MaN...quick question, how many games did the Celtics win on the road against the Pistons???? Wait, they not only won 2, but also clinched the series away from home! One could make a STRONG argument that the Pistons are a better team than the Spurs.
No go to guy? Are you serious? Did Paul Pierce drop 40+ points against one of the best defenses (Cavs) in the league in game 7? Something makes me think that he can make the last shot in a game if need be. It's amazing how the Cavs are considered a weak team, yet they have a player who is probably just as good as Kobe and one of the better defenses around.
One final note. Who says the Celtics won't be better next year as well? If memory serves me correct, most of the guys who are currently on the bench where players that were not on a team yet. You're trying to tell me that a free agent won't be interested in coming to play with Pierce, Allen, and Garnett for a chance to win a ring? Funny, Gary Payton and Karl Malone did the same thing a few years back to play with the Lakers....too bad you guys CHOKED and lost to the Pistons.
Oh yeah post 13, I'd respond to you too, but looks like you got beaten up enough by other people. Wouldn't want to make you feel any more stupid than you already do.
Let's look at the patterns:
Patriots - Most wins in the Regular Season, But Lost The Most Important One.
Keltics - Most wins in the Regular Season, But let's see in the Most Important Series. So many of you Keltic fans keep mentioning you beat us twice this year but are picking 7 games. Is that because you know your team can't win on the road??? We've actually won on every opponent's home court. can you say that? We only need to steal one game to take home court.
Two parts to every season. You looked like the best in the regular season. The Real Season is now, and we're playing much better, with a better team in a better conference. So until you beat a varsity team stop bragging about beating the jv squads... and what I thought was just an earthquake come to find out is just the keltic nation shaking in their boots. deep down inside you know you fear the purple and gold.
I can't believe what Celtic fans (if there are any real ones) are using as rationale...if you guys had Kobe, and Phil as head coach, you would be saying how the Lakers could never beat the best player in the league, and the best coach in the league with a bunch of "never won the big one types". Pierce will choke in his hometown. Tell me how Ray Allen will hit the big shot when the game is on the line. LA will collapse on KG, force people like Rondo and Perkins to come up big, which they won't do, at least not on the road. Also, the Celtics have no bench, the Lakers have the best bench in the league, look for Farmar, Sasha and Walton to really up the tempo, against a slow plodding team. Look for Kobe to go the foul line repeatedly, and look for Celtic faux fans to be yelling conspiracy after their rent-a-star team folds.
Re-read the post # 18 and #20...and to try and understand what was said........YOUR BIG 3 DON'T WANT THE ROCK AT CLUTCH MOMENTS!! PERIOD. They all point to other other guy as to who should take the shot. They are nothing more than a bunch of 2's. Yes they have they talent, and ability to fill up a stat line, but do not possess the untangible desire to choke you out when given the opportunity.
You come at me with stats. Stats say Ray Allen is all time, and stats don't lie, right? It is about winning championships, not filling up a stat sheet.
Celtics fans should not have to be lectured on that point.
Your big 3 have a big goose egg "0" when it comes to winning anything that matters.
You forget we got to witness firsthand , 2 of your 3 chokers, out here in the WC for a dozens years or so. We know what you got, and we like it. A bunch of rotten goose eggs.
Please re-read the original post......stats don't mean squat.
Go Lakers
Clearly rooting for/against a team(s) and/or an athlete(s) is a natural action, reaction, feeling, opinion, or what have you that exists for everybody. But as I mentioned earlier, in the context of the sport itself, when it involves off the court personal issues, what does that have to do with the game itself? I understand everybody can root for whatever reasons they want; it's subjective, it's a feeling, it's a personal opinion. Yes, I get that. But what get's me, is that sometimes the reasons for rooting doesn't make sense or just does not support your case.
For example, if someone were to ask you, "What do you think of Kobe Bryant?" and you replied by saying, "Personally I don't know him but I don't like the guy. I don't respect him because he cheated on his wife and raped a girl and he just sets bad example for everyone". Understandably so that is a great reason why you wouldn't root or like the guy. But then if you were asked "Who do you like to win the championship...Boston or LA?" and you reply by saying, "I'm rooting for Boston to win because I hate Kobe. He's a rapist ." Okay, that's fine to have your own feelings and opinions. But I just don't agree on that reasoning. what does off-court issue have to do WITH THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME? Is Kobe going to rape somebody in the game? What does rape have to do with who's going to win the championship or not. As #4 said, if that's the sole reason for rooting against LA, then so be it. That's fine and dandy. I just don't agree with that reasoning and how it deals with the sport.
Now.. it would be a different issue if there was some personal issues in direct relation to the game. And to your point, sully, you brought up a great point with regards Pete Rose and his gambling issues. Other examples Barry Bonds and Mark McGuire with HGH and steroids, Patriots with spy-gate, Marion Jones with HGH, Tim Donaghy with gambling...ok those are great reasons to root again someone/some team IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GAME itself. Why? Because it has a direct effect on the game. I guess for myself I just concentrate within the sports "sphere" when it comes to rooting for a team or an athlete. That doesn't mean that I don't have any feelings or opinions on whatever off the court issues they may have; I just don't mix the two unless it somehow relates to it.
Laker fans? Hahahahaha, what a buch of h0m0's.
I have stepped in puddles deeper than most of the people in the first 10 rows of a Laker game.
ok Kyrol
Lets destroy your post shall we?..Good I knew you will appreciate that ,lets go step by step to make it easy for ya.
1-for all you clowns that continue to bash Kobe for colorado why don't you get all the facts straight and check out the chick involved.
C=Hey I don't care since I'm not a judge and second we are not his wife. Then again she got a huge ring to keep it quiet ;)
2-no one in any sports cheats on their wife or cheats in general (look in your backyard with your patriot coach bilicheat).
E=Again are you married to the guy? no then shut up..Spygate all you guys keep talking about even when every other coach in the league kept saying "we have done stuff like that". Also did Bill gave you a ring?..lol
3-37 win altanta and 45 win cleveland took your vaunted team and it's defense to seven games.
L= Again copy and repeat all you guys have to say. But didn't you guys lost to those same Hawks during the regular season? Also are you lost? since you guys are playing in Boston and not in ATL(guess your mind is playing trick on ya..so please stop staring into the sun..lol)
4- hey maybe it's not your defense, but that your offense is offensive, it down right sucks. your boston three "partly" can't get it in the hole.
T= Funny that shows that you weren't paying attention to Pierce,KG and Allen Dunking on everybody :-P
5- (maybe three "partly's" can make one complete kobe) and which one of those three partly's wants (not ends up with) but WANTS to take that last shot. NO GO TO GUY.
I= Again i would trade that Kobe for those 3 guys since you forgot that there's no I in team ;)
6-Instead of asking the nation, let's just ask boston who they'll root for... I can hear the results roaring in .... that boston crowd chanting MVP, MVP, MVP it's unanimous LA and boston are pulling for the Lakers.
C=Kepp your damn MVP we gladly will take the Trophy ;) later Arod..oops i mean
Kobe..LOL Hey it shows how humble we are has your team ever rooted for the opponent to win it for their side? NOPE. As soon as you guys are loosing by 10+ with a minute to go automatically you guys hit the exit. Same happens with every sport team in LA ;)
7- Lakers in 5. boston's inability to win on the road will kill them with the 2-3-2 format. (It's at least nice to see you in the playoffs again as short lived as it will be) Scary Thought for the rest of the league... we'll be even better next year. (listening to tommy heinsohn on the replays is like fingernails on a chalkboard.)
S= Hey ask the Pistons if we can't win on the road..LOL Love that from you trolls all this talk and once we prove you wrong. Poof they are gone until next year. short lived since game one of the Finals and we still here hehehe. Hey atlest Tommy is not going nuts like West,...LOL what does that spell
CELTICS. NO I'm not going to predict how many wins we will get ..only the miss Cleos from LA love doing that..lol
GO CELTICS
If someone had not complained (Kobe Bryant) the Lakers would not be in this position. The "complaining", Andrew Bynum's injury and the theft of Gasol have taken this team to where it is today. A possible NBA Championship not to mention the future of the Lakers. Their future looks brighter than any other team although Portland and Salt Lake City will be much better. Everyone else had better look out.
Go Lakers!!
Here are some facts for this write up.
Fact-The NBA stated the the Lakers web site gets more hits then any other team web site.
Fact-Kobe web site gets more hits than any other NBA player.
Fact-Kobe was never convicted of being a rapist, never even went to trial.
Fact-That girls own friends said she was know as a gold digger.
Fact-She came to his room late at night and did more than just kissed him. Heavy petting was part of it.
Fact-She did not run to the police until way after the fact.
Fact-Her own attorney told her that this may look real bad for her when everything about her came out in the trial.
Fact-Kobe did settle with her because it would have been far cheaper than paying his attorney for a full trial and it was them that suggested the settlement.
Fact-The Lakers have far more fans than the Celtics which alone would indicated the most of the USA fans as well as the fans around the world will be routing for the Lakers.
Not a fact but a most likely event would be the Lakers in five, maybe six.
Gimme a Break! 24 wins is in shambles. The most storied franchise in the sport decimatetd by, not one, but two tragic deaths to the two players who were to carry the torch for the next generation. And as far as the movie script goes, don't forget to add the part about your best player being a few years removed from a rape trial and who's now amidst rumors of another affair with Laker Girl Vanessa Curry. Don't forget to add in the part about how that star player was also boooooed by the biggest front-running, bandwagon sports town in America. The great story-line would, in fact, be the league's most storied franchise returning to glory and three of the leagues best and most tenured players, who to my knowledge, have carried themselves with dignity off the court, receive the rings they have so coveted. The "Fakers" represent the fakest city on the planet. Jack Nicholson and all those other poseur front-runners can kiss my a$$. Go Celts!!!
What the hEck does yesterday have to do with today, all you Celts fans keep talking about the history, the Celtics dominated the league way back in the 60's okay fine but the game was played totally different then it's played today, different rules, different offenses, deffenses, different athletes, coaching was different, different stratagies, let go of the past it doesn't matter to present i guess that's why the Celts haven't won anything in more than 20yrs the team and it's fans are stuck in the past, WACK UP PEOPLE THE CAN'T AND WILL NOT WIN......GO LAKERS!
The guy who said LeBron is better than Kobe is not smart.
America will be rooting against Boston, as usual. GO LAKERS!!!
The Lakers suck. I hate everything about them. I wish we could bring their fans here and slap those little punks around a bit. East coast baby! KG, PP, Ray Ray, and the gang are going to give the beat down. Celts in 6!
BEAT LA!
BEAT LA!
BEAT LA!
Wicked Pissah Dude!
I'm glad to see the Celtics/Lakers back again. It will never be the same as old school. Neither of these teams can come close to Baylor/West vs.Russell/Cousy or Bird/Parrish/Mchale vs. Kareem/Magic/Rambis. These were the great teams. This is a whole new game and a whole new generation. L.A. has a great team and the Celtics have impressed me by getting this far with a team who has not played together and for the first season did great with defense and team play. I am a Celtic fan and a basketball fan. I personally would love it to go to seven games. I'm a seven game fanatic in any sport. I also hope all the games are close and down to the wire. I was a Kobe fan until this last incident in Colorado. I live in Colorado. The young lady was not paid money or ever asked for money. The
defense for Kobe wanted background check on the young lady and was granted. The attorney's for the young lady asked for the background on Kobe and was
refused. Why? Because he had three other instances of the same charge, twice while single and one other time when he was married. There was alot in the newspaper about this and they said that if it had of been brought up in court he would have been found guilty. The judge even got an autograph. The facts: Kobe had money and influence. The young lady had nothing. Fair trial? Ha! So there are the facts. But back to basketball, this should be a great series and the better team will win. Enjoy your team, enjoy the game, chill out and enjoy some great basketball. I would like to add that the bashing of Atlanta is crazy. They had a bad season but got better. They have a great young team and if they stay together watch out for them next year. Go Celtics
Hey Eddy: Tell me where were you the last 10 years? Were you showing up at the TD Garden (or whatever you call that dump) Uh, no. You and your fellow faux fans, bandwagon jumpers that you are, didn't follow the NBA, did you? Nah, I did not think so. Staples sold out the 3 years between this year and 2004, last year you sold out 3 measly games. Wow, you guys are loyal! Now, you mention if an LA team is losing by ten with a minute to go, we hit the exits, as if you faux fans don't? I have been to your dump, when your beloved (now that you're winning) team is down by 4 or 6 with less than a minute, I see the Garden empty faster than rats off a sinking ship. Oh, and how come when the Celts lose people say their tickets are too expensive but now that they are winning, no price is too much to pay? Faux bandwagon fans, just like the Pats who were ready to move before Kraft bought the team, due to no fan support, but now you act like Boston invented football. Get your facts straight, Eddy old pal, because you are no different than your faux brethern. Too much Kobe, too much Phil, and all you have is 2 Western Conference rejects and one LA born traitor who will choke when he comes home. Post after your team comes up short...again.
THE BOTTOM LINE - The Celtics are a difficult matchup for the Lakers. I am not a fan of either team ... but honestly who is going to rebound for L..A.? Gasol and Odom can't out rebound KG and perk, et al. So, Kobe's gonna have to do it all on his own. Sorry, it ain't gonna happen. Look for Pierce to have a huge series (he always plays well in L.A.)... Boston's much too strong. It is the green's year. Celtics will win in 6. They will win the 1st two at home...drop one in L.A. and win the 6th on their home court. It's pretty clear they'll be hoisting banner number 17.
Good luck to all. We'll be watching....
How is it a team that had to go 7 against Atlanta (Do they have a team) and against a one may Cav team, is all of a sudden going to take out the team that blew through the West, which is essentially the NBA while the Least, er East is the CBA? Celtic Nation (if there is one, I guess there is now that you won again) get with the program. In the words of the great Ricky Pitino: "Ain't Larry Bird, Kevin McHale or Robert Parish coming through that door" (then he added, this town makes me sick...Boston that is..how true, how true) Get out of the past, there is no Bird, or Hondo, only Rondo, yeah, he's great! Now that you have rediscovered the NBA after a 21 year hibernation (great fans, haha) you can be approrpriately humiliated back into another 1 or 2 decades of again ignoring the NBA once your sad team goes down to the team, and city, and fans, that despise you the most. Make sure you don't get hurt when the wheels come off the Celtic bandwagon.
Hey jeff careful with the Raiders they hate anybody using the word "nation" when it comes to sports..LOL and there's no Laker "nation" buddy.. LOL
Dear Boston Laker
simple where was i 10 yeas ago? simple
i was in college..lol so i couldn't afford anything. Second right now I live in NYC and Im all thing N.E not afraid to show it,and how many games you been to TD and call it a dump That building is a state of the art facility . Wow shows you know a lot about buildings. Last time I was back home the Celts weren't the talk of town but still sold out their games when there was no Sox or Pats game and also you forgot Basketball was invented in Mass not in LA ;-P. the Staple center never had the chance or the desire to go see a game at your dump. Hey at lest we have a team close to Boston you guys could never keep an NFL team(do you guys know what's the NFL?. You guys are the joke of everybody even Barnacle O'reilly..lol).
About too much Kobe you are right..We are fed up with you guys and your homer crush on Kobe, a guy that wanted ,demanded, begged and cry for a trade. Still talks crap about Shaq a guy that help him. Same thing will Happen to byrnum once hes back because Kobe cries and your owner needs to take care of his baby.
Hey those 3 guys are playing together as a team(Hey Kobe take some notes and I mean read then this time..lol) Also Pierce has never Choked in your dump look up your stats. See you after game one Miss Cleo ooops I mean Boston Laker
I heard the Celtics assistant coach tried to tape the Lakers defensive signals but all they could get was Phil with his fingers in his mouth; whistling. CHOWDS.
The NBA endorsed mega trades to get these two less than mediocre teams to this point. Rah Rah! Hook up your DVR and when you're really bored, watch the Super Bowl of LA, Memphis, Seattle and Minneapolis! How rewarding this must be for Laker and C's fans - not!
Number 45...you an idiot first and foremost. I did go back and re-read my exerpt and I do not take anything back. Do you know how many times Paul Pierce has hit a game winning shot in his career?? more than 10. So shove it kiddo. And to the goose egg you refer to, it is true none of them have ever won. But i want you to tell me one and only ONE team than any of those 3 were on that was good enough to make it ot the finals. kobe has always had shaq, without shaq, Kobe is a little kid cruying with no rings and most likely not in LA. For three SUPERSTAR players in this league to come together and play like a T-E-A-M, they need to put aside their egos and play for the team. Ask them off the court when their all together who wants it? Not one of them would say their own name. Its a team with more than 1 person that can hit the shot. See what ahppens game time..Paul Pierce will take the last shot and the only person on earth that he trust with the ball othert than himself is Ray Allen and I dont think anyone in the NBA could dispute that.
And yeah your right Yan, stats dont mean evertything. But what are you really tryin to say here? Nothing! Ray Allen is the best pure shooter in the NBA stats, form and all. You couldnt recognize that if it jumped up and bit u in the ass...moron. Championships count for alot, but when you got Shaq, you dont have to worry. How many does Kobe have without Shaq?? ZEROOOO. love how you think championships count for everything when BOSTON HAS 16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lakers only have 14........get your shit right before you come at me with anything you have to say. Every single fact or arguement you threw at me meant nothing and I turned every single one of them around.
Dont quit your day job YAN...because sports is something you have no knowledge about whatsoever.
BOSTON>lakers
He Eddy: What does the NFL have to do with anything. We have USC football, and have had it since the 20's. You have no college football (oh, wait BC, HAHA yah, I forgot) Eddy...I work in Boston, know the town well, you know nothing about LA, that's ok, you are a Celtic fan. I respect that. I am a Laker fan, and in the 13 years of living here, I have yet to see any "Celtic Pride" I see Red Sox jerseys all the time, and everyone has a man-crush on Tom Brady (if Kobe is a jerk, what is pretty boy?)You can talk trash, Eddy, (the Miss Cleo thing is so contrived, wicked contrived) I have yet to see a single Celtic post that makes any sense, you are going to win because.....you play great defense...ok, so did the Spurs, because Pierce plays well in LA..let's see how he does in the finals....we'll find out, because Doc can outcoach Phil...ooook..if you say so, pal. Point is this, the Lakers dominated the superior west and your team struggled in the pathetic east, that is fact, Edward. If the Celts win, hey, I say congrats. Don't count on it..and puhleeze, you say the Celts sold out when the Pats or Sox were not in town...so what..they sold out 3 times last year and their were thousands of KOBE jerseys the last several years when the Lakers came to town, and last year they were chanting for Kobe , how sad is that? Great fans, hun? Hey Eddy, don't get hurt when you jump off the bandwagon!
Hey you started with the Pats so we had to show you the door on that subject. Yeah USC BIG WOOOP. Is College football so BLAAAH . OOH YEAH BC but you also forgot the other colleges here(too many to name) . you guys only have what? USC,UCLA and Standford..anything else? LOL. Hey dude you know Boston? sounds to me like you know Jack about my beloved City. LA all i care to know: Earthquakes,Fires,Smog, worse Traffic on earth,Gang violence,Riots,Car chases, porn and ooh yeah Arnold... NO thank I stay on the East coast. Hey I'm a pats fan but never wore a Brady Jersey(I have a Troy Brown and Randy moss jersey). Hey I have only see alot of Miss cleos when they come talk trash about the Celts and once their team lose they are gone. Dude you Lakers fans are the one that that come in here with so much insanity is not even funny. We will win because of Kobe and phil. What where the rest of your team? hey for a 24 win team 3 times is good enough. Also about the jersey big deal where are you wearing your Lakers jersey in town?. Bandwagon try wearing you team jersey on enemy territory . Yeah I bet you done that..yeah right..LOL. Hey don't get hurt if we take care of business like the last time we meet you guys ;0). Don't need for you to say congrats all i need for you to say Ok you were right. Thanks
GO CELTICS!!!
RA-PIST, RA-PIST, RA-PIST.
Die Boson Laker Die!
Umm Ucla bro.. Your first game prediction was wrong, but I do hope your prediction for game two is correct :-D.

What happen where BostonLaker and the rest of the Laker fans? I guess they are still on shock. But hey comeback anytime.. later guys
GO CELTICS
Boston Laker...HA. HA. HA!! Celtics won yet again in game 2. What can you say?? The celtics are simply BETTER. And what is that you were saying about Pierce? We'll see how he does in the finals?? Well you saw it if you watched pal, that is unless you changed the station. And yes, defense is the way they are going to win. You must be a little slow questioning how defense can win...Defense wins championships, its the oldest saying is sports history dummy.
Celtics in 6.
