Source: Celtics make offers to Posey, Maggette
The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it's doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.
Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2007-08 and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.

lets see the big 3 give some money back so we can sign a top free agent like maggette
Contracts are guarenteed in the NBA...They can't just give money back.
well it sounds good, i think tom brady did it a couple years ago
kobe and shaq doing a duet or gas dropping to a buck fifty are more likely than nba players giving money back. sorry, not even our celtics
forget maggette. he's a chucker. sign posey, house, tyron lue and alonzo mourning and call it a day.
And the NFL == the NBA when you think about it. Players earn too much and they're big jerks and they don't care like they used to. Plus their shorts are too long.
Forget Maggot. We need Pose, but I doubt he'll stick around
How would Maggette fits ?
Just sign Posey, House and get PJ back and I would be happy. Give Posey a 4-year deal and be done with it. Give House a 3-year deal so he can stop being a journeyman. Resign PJ in February and we’ll be set.
maggette would be good off the bench...... Id rather have Posey, but I would love to have Maggette if Posey gets a huge offer from another team
I would love to get maggette. This move would finally give the Celts alittle scoring off the bench and maybe even a long term solution when Ray Allen's contract becomes tradable in 2 years. Also, like ed said, bring in Zo and we will repeat!!!
if we get maggette and posey, let's go ahead and plan for the next parade in 2009!
don't forget we'll still talking to Alonzo Mourning!
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
Words of wisdom/
Keep Posey.
Posy has proved he fits and adds an intangible spirit and confidence to the team. Cory Maggette could never duplicate Posy's role. He would not fit into the rotation the way Posy does. I predict that Danny Ainge will make too many changes in the of season and destroy the chemistry of last season's team. I will also go out on a limb and say that the Celtics will not repeat as champs because of the meddling Ainge will do this summer. Laugh, but just wait and see.
cant sign both, Ainge has to have a deal pending to free up cap room, if they sign Magette Ray Allen seems like the most logical to be traded.
Posey should be the top priority. He is a lockdown defender. Defense is what won the title for us. In addition, he can knock down a three from anywhere on the court. The Celtics need to resign him and house and bring in a back up point guard. Its the only way I see them repeating and bring home title 18 to Green Nation

In football you can give money back because the money isn't guaranteed. In the NBA, the contracts are guaranteed. My guess is that they are offering Maggette in case they don't get Posey, or, as leverage to Posey, basically saying "If you don't want to sign, we got our guy." If I'm Posey, I get the best deal I can gets. I got two rings, it's time to get paid. If I'm Maggette, just the opposite, I've got my $$$, I want my ring. Should be interesting.
First off, I don't think you can compare the NBA and NFL. Completely different sports and what each respective sport requires is vastly different. The amount of damage done to your body in a football game is nowhere near comparable to basketball. Even taking into account the among of game, it isn't the same. For example, we see alot more NFL players that are severely limited in mobility and physical capabilities after their career is over as compared to NBA players. Anyway, we fuel it. This sports blog fuels it, the people in this country fuel it. If we didn't pay so much attention to sports, the money wouldn't be there.
Contracts are only guarenteed in baseball
Maggette is a losing player. Plays a selfish game and does not fit into the Celtics "team" attitude. Sign Posey and House or another veteran point.
wow, maggette would be an incredible 6th man. but i don't see how they could get him
How about Baron Davis as a backup to Rondo?
I don't think it'll happen here, but Shawn Kemp gave back money when he was with Orlando.
Posey gives hugs, think about that.
Magette could easily get a 5 years -60 millions dollars else where, and now that baron davis comes to town, i really dont think its ever gona happen.
Don't know much about Maggette but he averaged almost 15 points more and 1 rebound more than Posey. I know Posey didn't play Maggette minutes, but if he did, could he have Maggette numbers? Just a thought. If someone went down and Posey had more playing time, would he have better numbers? If I am wrong, kick me in the shins.
What? No offer to Ryan Gomes?
Earn too much money? I think you're talking about MLB, not the NBA or NFL.
Never listen to anyone touting Tyron Lue.
Where would Maggette play? Pierce, Allen and Mags play basically the same position, and with Rondo entrenched at the point, Garnett at the four, and Perkins/Powe in the middle, that leaves two spots for three players.
And don't even think about Garnett moving to center and Pierce or Mags playing the four; it wouldn't work and it wouldn't be good team-player relations to move big-money players to positions they don't feel comfortable playing. That would have negative consequences down the line when the C's were trying to re-sign these guys or pick up another big name.
Posey fit well. I'm confused about the offer to Maggette, that's all.
Evidently Pierce asked Ainge whether Maggette had the "right equipment" for the locker room. Ainge said he really likes Maggette's root and thinks it would be fun to have another player in the locker room....go figure...
Maggette? Really? He wouldn't start for us and I'm sure he can get more money elsewhere where he can start. Posey makes a lot more sense...I get the feeling Posey will play as a mercenary for contenders for 6 more teams before he retires and win 4 or 5 more rings..
There must be a good white guy the Celts can bring in ......Celtic Pride

posey all day good defense and also nice shooting range
Posey would be a huge asset for the C's next year. I'm not sure he'd find a better team, so it's about the cash and the length of the contract. Watched Sports Tonite and apparently they may be thinking of signing Maggette and trading Ray. Sounds like a bad idea to me!!!!
If I were covering the NBA for a living, I would have at least a nodding acquaintance with the CBA. Ever hear of the Non-Bird Exception, Marc?
In Danny we Trust...
dswen, you clearly don't understand the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The players' union would never let them give money back, it would set a bad precedent. And Brady didn't give money back. He restructured his deal. He backweighted it, but same amount of money. Maggette won't sign with us anyways because he can get a starting job and 15 more mpg in New Orleans or Orlando. He's not old enough to sacrifice pt and $$$ for a chance at a championship yet.
Ed: Nice idea, but Posey, House, and Lue will all be seeking the full MLE or most of it. Best case scenario we get Posey and Lue. If Alonzo plays next year, it will be with the Heat.
haha I bet Tom Clancy (above) is in his 60s or 70s...
but, we need a SG/PG scorer off the bench. Maggette is a great talent... i doubt he'll enjoy this role.. in celtics though.
just resign posey if not, sign jarvis hayes and get carlos arroyo or Kareem Rush... and get a decent big man like Diop
When it come to Posey it all depends on what other contenders have to offer. If any of them can offer him a 3 year deal at 6-8 million a year it'd be hard for him to not move on. If the other offers are somewhat equal I can't see him leaving.
Personally, I hope he decides to resign with the Celtics.
having grown up a celtic fan (born in fall river) and now a clipper fan (13 years as a season ticket holder), you will learn to hate corey maggette as a most selfish player...he is a "ball killer"...doesnt play defense...cant shoot 3's and shouldnt, but, he will....he's not a particularly smart basketball player even though he went to duke...he's a terrible ball handler...crappy passer...you are way, way, way better off with james posey.
Well, no, Tom Brady didn't give money back.
What he did was RESTRUCTURE his contract. He got paid the exact same amount of money, the method in which was paid out (namely when he was paid) was merely changed in order to make it more cap friendly for signing free agents.
The contract rules in the NFL are very different from the NBA. Doing something similar is simply not allowed.
Dear Danny A.;
Please ask one of the "Big Three" to resign their contracts after restructuring it to allow Posey to resign, and still stay under the team salary limit for the next three or four years. Some players take guarantied salaries stretched out after their contract expires. Posey is playoff Lucky-Charm who just happens to be a Clutch Jump-Shooter, Defensive Stopper, and Rebounds. If he plays for the Celtics next year he will be a lock as the NBA's Sixth-Man-Award winner. How could Posey and more Banners not be worth what ever $$$ it takes to ink him in with the Celtics?
They cant give money back, well thats not true theoretically they could but it would make no difference cap wise unless they were cut and got new contracts but that could mess things up a lot
3 KEYS TO REPEAT: POSEY DEFENSE POSEY
j.r. would be like kane...kane...kane
DON'T TRADE RAY ALLEN!!!!!
His contract ($18 Million / Year) expires before the summer of 2010. Among others, these are the headliners of that free agent class:
-LEBRON JAMES (A superstar to carry the team into the future)
-Dwayne Wade (Because he's a 2-guard with a legit handle... not sure if his game would crowd Rondo's - they'd need perimeter shooters to open things up)
-Chris Bosh (whose game is considered by "experts" to be similar to a young Garnett)
Resigning Pose is an absolute no-brainer. Multi-year deal or whatever it takes , he's got miles in the tank and frozen blood when it counts, NO BRAINER. Secondly, why would we even be talking about trading Ray Allen or his contract in 2 yrs? This guy should retire a Celtic and I personnaly believe his conditioning and relatively injury-freeness... or whatever... he could play 3 more years or more and is the best sharpshooter in the game. Eddie House, PJ Brown and Sam Cassell are replacable, the rest of those cats are gonna show out now that they have chemistry and experience... in the playoffs, when it counts!! KEEP POSEY!! Sorry Mike, here's to 73 wins!
We need to get the Owners to pay the luxury tax so we can get Poessey locked into a 3 year deal.
Never tinker with a winning formula.
NBA players cannot restructure guaranteed contracts any more than MLB players can. Period. Please stop talking about it. It will not happen.
For those who love Posey, bear in mind that he is seeking a FOUR or FIVE year deal for the mid-level exemption. Signing him to such a deal would drastically curtail the team's ability to sign other free agents. Again, this isn't baseball. The NBA salary cap creates a finite limit on what one team can spend and Posey is a 31-year old player who has been criticized for his conditioning in the past (see: Miami).
Ma
Whatever the Celtics do, please do not sign Tyrone Lue. He is injury prone, inefficient, and a major liability on defense.
maggette will never except a mle
Stars not giving money back? The game's best big man did it last year when renegotiating his contract. Tim Duncan left approx. 10+ million on the table so that San Antonio could bring in more talent over the next phase of his career. Stars that are committed to a team concept do things like that. Not so much from individuals who simply can't win alone and selfishly cast off their original teams to chase a ring for themselves.
Guys - Tyronn Lue is just awful - we do not want him.
We had an opportunity to draft a backup point guard and we did not .
Reason being:
Gabe Pruitt - kid is a stud and will contribute as our backup PG next season
Morning and maggette I smell repeat
The issue with Posey is that he's looking for a long-term contract and he's a few years older. If Magette does agree to sign a mid-level then it goes a long way to show that he's a man we want on this team. Magette could easily command more than this but maybe, just maybe, he's sick of losing. Clipper's owner Sterling is notoriously tight with his wallet and everyone knows that you don't work as hard for a boss you don't like. If he got his motivation back magette appears to have all the tools to make him the same defensive menace as Posey. Additionally, Posey's much-hyped championship experience now loses it's importance as this squad now have that. I'm definetly against trading Ray though.
please keep Posey and House ,PJ Danny A ; you are doing a good job so keep it up Celtics for life
Hey jerks!! YOU guys already got 1 championship give others a chance!! Leave Orlando to sign Corey Maggette por favor. Honestly, it'd be best for the C's to keep your team as close as it was last year. Keep House, Posey, etc. No way you get Mourning.
why would you trade Ray Allen? A veteran presence, a consumate professional and one of the best shooters in the game for a ball hog like magette. He was a fluke at duke and we dont need him. keep the starters INTACT and strenghten
the bench by signing Posey, and House. Let the recently drafted Bill walker heal
and look for a servicable center (alonzo will most likely stay in Miami) if PJ retires.
I personnally think Walker was a steal. If/when he heals and is %100, look for him to turn some heads.....
I wonder if they could get Sean williams from NJ???
and to Richard W...a ball player is a ball player, white, black, orange or green!!!
Listen, I like Posey just as much as the next guy, but resigning him to a long-term deal presents us with quite a challenge. If we lock him up for say, 4 years, then our team will turn old really, really fast. Ray Ray will be 33 later this month, and is already playing on two bad knees. KG has been the most dominant PF in the game for the last decade, but not even he is immune to the wear-and-tear the NBA has on its players. Even Pierce is getting up there. What we have now is this: No back up SG (unless we hit the open market for one) and a shortage at SF (Posey and Pierce will be both 31 and locked up, if Posey re-signs). Powe will also be in the last year of his deal. Do you think he wants to play behind KG given how well he's done? What we have do now is get younger (and cheaper), so those titles keep coming.
If it were me I would reconstruct my contract if I was garnett, peirce, and allen so we could get both posey and maggette, all 3 of the boston 3 party have already made the bulk of what they would make so why not take less to win more. None of them would be hurting if they took less money. Its not gonna happen but I would love to see it. CELTICS FOREVER
You want your man Posey; If you have another fish thinking about an equivilent offer (Maggette), you make the offet to both. DA is using the squeeze technique
Pose's agent see' someone else sniffing bait, and if Pose really wants to come back for reasonable money, he may be enticed to sign firstest for the mostest....
Maggette I believe is a teaser in this negotiation...
1. I love Posey as much as anyone, but do you all not remember what happened to the Celtics in the 1980s when they held on to their aging veterans? They got old together and the team went into a 22-year slide, aided of course by the deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis and the itchy trigger finger of Ricky Pitino. You can't clutter the cap for four years with a bench guy, as valuable as he was this year. I hope Danny is as cold-blooded as Belichick/Pioli and Theo. That's why those two teams have won multiple championships. They understand this is a business and don't generally get caught up in the emotion of how much the fans like a guy.
2. I recently saw Chris Bosh at a Red Sox game - about a month ago - and one of the ticket guys said his wife has family in the area, so that can only help the Celts' cause in pursuing him, if they do choose to go that route. I can't say I'd be upset if they went after LeBron instead but his comments about Brooklyn and his ties to Jay-Z make me think he'll be wearing a Nets uniform once he leaves the Cavs.
3. I'm not sure I understand the Corey Maggette thing, especially since he seems to be a one-dimensional guy who cares only about his PPGs.
I don't want to see Ray Allen traded. I would like to see them resign Posey.
Keep Posey for 2 more yrs!! If hee doesnt want to take that then bye!!!!!! Dont trade Ray Allen, lue is a bum we better not sign him!! Would like Zoe as a backup I still think he has a little left in the tank!! And Gabe is going to be a really good PG!!! Just make the bench stronger. Pollard?? I hope PJ comes back also. We need to keep defense as the may objective!!! then we will get number 18!!!
sign maggette he can easily play 20 -25 mins of the bench as a back up for both allen and pirce, do not sign up if he posey wants more than 3 years do NOT trade allen and also try and pick up morning if possible.House is a no brainer the guy can shoot the lights out. As for a back up pg y not sign up telfair or give pruitt a chance
i say bring in kurt thomas , kenny thomas or lorenzen wright to replace pj , resign posey and house!
Danny Ainge, what ever you do, SIGN JAMES POSEY! Bottom Line
if we want to want to win again, we have to keep the same team spirit. Posey and house should stay, because those guys can knock down a three pointer.Remember the lakers game when we are down 24 points. posey can chase all the lose balls and we need posey and house, please let danny knows about this. WE NEED POSEY AND HOUSE.
Read some articles that Doc and Magette's family go back a ways. I hope that Doc doesn't overestimate his ability here. Corey has never been much of a defender and needs the ball a lot. That runs against the TEAM approach that just won the Championship. I think you can talk all day about what you want to see from a player or a team. We saw it happen in Game 6 and Posey was in the thick of it in the second quarter not Magette!
Dont trade RAY if you do that then you wiil mess up the flow the C's have going you gotta get younger on the bench look at maggette or a ben godon someone thats good but wont really get a big contract and thats a great team player we need Jesus Walter Ray Allen Please In ainge we trust
haha rofl at any one saying that maggette out and po-z in ... i want both .. but fave the facts maggette average 22.1 ppg last yea ..and if he took a pay cut to come here accepting the role of 6th man ... we'd have the big 4... one off the bench, you are all crazy. po-z brings allot but face it .. hes a hopper he doesnt care bout boston like maggette would, come on in corey hah.
maggette could fit in just fine if the big three could let go of there egoes then im pretty sure he could to i think we should sighn possey instead but also go after baron davis hes gettin up there in his years and would be a good teacher to rondo have them spolit time another championship easy
I'm all for re-signing posey. anything else i would consider a bonus
Posey is the man. To all the celtics fans every time you see a laker fan remind them of the 39 pts beat down in game 6 and the come back in game 4
Just checked the stats and Maggette had 33 against the C's in February with 5 steals. One of the best games he played all year! Also he's due big $$$'s from the Clips, so if we can't have Posey and Maggette agrees to come and play some D, it's sounding better to me.
holy crap i thought omar cook was dead!!
anyways what isee a lot of people missing here is posey wants at least 4 if not 5 yrs for his nect contract. he knoes thats gonna be his last big one. danny cant afford to go that long and he certainly cant afford to give posey mle money. they have too many other holes to fill. and after all that danny still has to keep an eye toward the future of this team and making sure it remains competitive for the long haul.
j j reddick great shooter just needs playing time! sad to say but white players dont get the playing time . he would be great fit.
