Celtics sign O'Bryant

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff July 11, 2008 03:38 PM

The Celtics have signed Warriors free agent center Patrick O’Bryant to a two-year deal, according to NBA sources. The 7-foot, 260-pounder was the ninth overall pick out of Bradley in the 2006 NBA Draft by Golden State, but played sparingly in two seasons. The Celtics worked out O’Bryant, who is expected to back up center Kendrick Perkins, a week ago at their training facility in Waltham.

  1. why? He didn't play for the Warriors, who desperately needed a big man.

    Posted by Mike M July 11, 08 05:09 PM
  1. Great move!! O'Bryant may turn out to be a steal if he can get into playing shape. Conditioning is they key. Now we need a good backup power forward. Perhaps "The "Birdman"?

  1. Celtics sign some guy named Patrick O'Bryant and pass on Chris Andersen aka the Birdman?! Whats next signing Darius Miles over James Posey?

Posted by Mike July 11, 08 05:49 PM
  1. The signing of Bryant just means we can wave bye bye to Pollard. My guess is Bryant sees abou 81 DNP - CDs unless Perk gets hurt.

  1. The Difference being Mark Blount was asked to be a starter, which he is not nor will he ever truly be! Obrian will be a reserve, and will be working with one of the most elite big man in the game today (Garnet). I LIKE this addition!!!

  1. Whats the details? I know the C keep the finical details prvt but what does mean for Posey?

  1. A younger PJ Brown or a stiff? Who knows. Nellie doesn't like to play the slower, bigger types, so who knows what this guy can be?

Posted by Ghost of Johnny Most July 11, 08 06:06 PM
  1. A definite upgrade over Scot Pollard...Pat O'Bryant is younger and with loads of potential...I don't see Mark Blount part deux, but possibly a poor man's Robert Parish...

  1. 5:09 and 5:20 couldn't be more wrong. This guy might not be the answer (I'm not sure what the question is). But he is way too young, long and talented to be dismissed. The only thing he has done is get stuck in dog house of the Don Nelson system. NO big men thrive in that system. Look at what its done to Al Harrington, and a great young prospect like Biendris. Golden State's run and gun style prevented OBryant from showing any potential. Lets give him a chance here. My money says he'll be a very good backup.

  1. I trust Danny Ainge on this one

Posted by Bill Wallace July 11, 08 06:32 PM
  1. Finally the Celtics will have some bums to sit on the bench!

Posted by Jack July 11, 08 06:35 PM
  1. Obryant is only good when he is motivated, hopefully this situation will get him out of his "bust" status... Decent signing considering who is out there

  1. Where else shoudl a guy named Patrick O' Bryant play?

Posted by Owen July 11, 08 06:40 PM
  1. Seems to me we had good luck the last time we stole a center who didn't play from the Warriors!!

  1. good feat, poor hands - not that tough but he's better than Eric Fernstein!

  1. POB is soft and has no heart. Put Leon Powe's heart and soul into O'Bryant and you'll have a player

    Posted by Mike X July 11, 08 07:23 PM
  1. he never played for Golden State because he's not a Don Nelson type player.
Nelson plays small ball, with little emphasis on the center position. Biedrins played most of the big-man minutes for the Warriors but he was always a 5th option. Then they go small-ball.
Ditto for Mikhail Pietrus, another non-Nelson player.
Jury is still out whether O'Bryant will be an NBA player or not, but it's a low-risk gamble for a guy drafted number 12 overall in 2006.

  1. With a name like Patrick O'Bryant, it seems fitting he's with the Celtics...

Posted by flobot July 11, 08 07:41 PM
  1. i like this signing. he didn't fit the don nelson system, but thats the complete opposite system than the one the celtics run. he'll be a good fit

Posted by irregularpanda July 11, 08 07:44 PM
  1. Its not Mark blunt because Mark Blount had a huge contract. There is no risk in this signing.

Posted by DH July 11, 08 08:01 PM
  1. Finally! We got an Irishman to go with the logo? Oh, he's not?

Posted by Bill July 11, 08 08:03 PM
  1. O'Bryant didn't play for the Warriors because he doesn't fit into Don Nelson's style of offense. He was drafted by Chris Mullen before Nelson went back there. Two years ago, Nelson only played a six man rotation in the playoffs, so there's not a lot of guys Nelson trusts.

Posted by mack July 11, 08 08:21 PM
  1. As bad of a player as O'Bryant may or may not be (I'm always worried about guys that have been in the league a couple years without playing much), this improves the team. Doesn't improve it as much as guys we've probably all dreamed about coming in. But it helps.

Posted by Chad July 11, 08 08:57 PM
  1. JUST SIGN POSEY! WITHOUT POSEY WE DON'T REPEAT AS CHAMPIONS IN 2009!

Posted by Lee Jones July 11, 08 09:27 PM
  1. Great, now he can just go to town with Troy O'Leary!

Seriously though, I like this a lot. Must have done something right to be a Lottery pick (then again, so did Telfair). Either way it's a nice pickup.

Now just go and get Gomes and Posey1

Posted by gbm July 11, 08 09:40 PM
  1. Nice size, 7'0", 260 lb. standing reach of 9'5", 76" wingspan, 22 years old. Decent athlete, can block shots and shoot a little, might never turn out to be much better than the Kandi man, but the Celts aren't asking O'Bryant to start, just be a decent backup center to Perk in time and take Pollard's place. At his age, might get better, worth a gamble if the Celts were able to get him for a low enough price.

Posted by JSB July 11, 08 09:57 PM
  1. Hey, PJ will retire and Pollard has injury problems. Perk is always in foul trouble and who knows how his health will be. Another big man can't hurt.

It is small money and doesn't effect the Posey situation at all.

Posted by Shawn July 11, 08 09:59 PM
  1. duh...this signing is just to add some Irish blood into this team full of Irish symbols...e.g. smoking mascot is from Ireland, right?

Posted by David July 11, 08 10:18 PM
  1. Doc, Garnett, Clifford Ray, The Truth and an organization with the ability to turn an out of shape "raw" project as Kendrick Perkins into an everyday contributor on a world championship team can only mean good things for a 23 year old 7 footer with a 7'5" wing span with above average shot blocking and rebounding skills. He can run and he can play defense, exactly what the celtics want off the bench. I like the move, also it's only a two year commitment. Now lets go snag Josh Childress for the mid level range and have a new spark off the bench! (I know he is restricted but he's an underrated baller)

Posted by LoneWolf July 11, 08 10:31 PM
  1. Anybody remember the last center we got from the Warriors??

Posted by DougB July 11, 08 10:43 PM
  1. How much did you guys sign him for? Thats the true question... its got to be more then the league min because he wouldnt have signed so quick hoping to get a better deal. It might be using part of the MLE.

Saying that... this might officialy take you guys out of the James Posey sweepstakes.

Posted by Thomas the Train July 11, 08 10:46 PM
  1. Low risk potential high reward. he's a young 7 footer! cant be any worse than Ankles Pollard. I say its worth the shot, besides like a previous comment mentioned hes gonna be playing in a great team/defense oriented system with Garnett/Allen/Pierce so who knows what he could develope into.

Remember this guy is coming off the bench so we cant expect too much.

  1. Hey all you guys out there you have no right to dis-trust Danny Ainge he has delivered a championship banner # 17. So if I were some of you guys that hav your doubts just go to sleep this off season and do the judging once the season starts.

Posey is a must sign he is vital to this teams make up, Tommy Heisohn said it best, Posey is the best 6th man the Cltics have ever had, this is from an x darn great player, coach and now analyst for the C's. You heard it here first no Posey means no repeat. Posey like Robert Horry is one of those rare players that you don't see in the league often. Make no mistake Danny Ainge if he's really smart will pay James accordingly. He isthe Key to Boston's success.

Posted by Cedric July 11, 08 11:52 PM
  1. Didn't everyone learn last year to Trust the Dan? ... 2008 World Champions, ring a bell? I bet Ainge got him for next to nothing. Guys want to play for a winner, and Garnett will make certain he works his butt off. Trust the Dan!

  1. HE IS A BEAST AND HAS LOADS OF TALENT HES A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

I FOLLOWED HIM AT BRADLEY HES THE BEST UP COMING CENTER IN THE LEAGUE!!

Posted by tyson July 12, 08 12:17 AM
  1. Being a Bradley Alum, I got to watch Patrick O'Bryant often. He came out way too early, but he has skills and dare I say, potential. He has a good low post game and certainly can block shots. I am excited about this addtion - it could turn out to be a steal. Remember, he was the 9th player chosen in the draft - albeit a weak one.

Posted by TJMan July 12, 08 12:21 AM
  1. he can be the number 12 player on the roster and if he develops he can move up... beats having someone that is on the downside (but doesn't think he is)....

  1. How will he be able to fulfill his obligation to the Celtics AND Access Holloywood!?

    Posted by bostonrip88 July 12, 08 01:39 AM
  1. What? I have learned to give Ainge the benefit of the doubt, but what does this mean for Posey. I cannot believe that Posey even hit the open market. I hope the ownership does not feel like the pressure is off now that they have won one title and now it is time to "get cheap". Do we even win the Championsip without Posey?

Posted by Celtic Elmo July 12, 08 01:48 AM
  1. As long as he stays healthy he'll play. All they need is a big man to back up Kendrick, who's always in foul trouble. This deal is more about size than skill, because this past season the Celt were thin at the center position. He's more of rebounder than a scorer.

Posted by iamser July 12, 08 05:16 AM
  1. we got robert parrish from golden state when they didn't want him and he turned out ok.!

Posted by Jens B Fog July 12, 08 07:33 AM
  1. He'll be Boston's most beloved Irishman athlete since Troy O'Leary!

Posted by Fitzy July 12, 08 09:11 AM
  1. They signed this guy for the minimum, which doesn't impact signing a guy like Posey AT ALL. This guy will be lucky to even make the team. Low risk, potential high reward. Garnett is the only 7 footer on the roster and he likes to be called 6'12" so at least we're trying to add some size.

Posted by Darth Jay July 12, 08 10:09 AM
  1. This is good signing for the C's as they need more backup IMO

Posted by Dave July 12, 08 11:24 AM
  1. O'Bryant was a terrific college player who was just coming into his own and helped Bradley make the Sweet 16. But he came out WAY too early, probably convinced to do so by an agent, and he was drafted in the Top10 because he's a 7-footer. He should have stayed at Bradley at least another year. A pretty low-risk signing by Danny.

  1. All I know is that the C's better get "THE BIRDMAN" because this guy may turn out to be a BIG STIFF!!! Plus, he won't be getting the playing time unless Perk, Powe, Big Baby(if he can get into REAL playing shape) are in foul trouble. He wasn't really good when he was in college at Bradley. Just cause they say you can't teach 7', doesn't mean he can play basketball. But, on the other hand I'm sure he didn't get a HUGE deal from the C's. So, taken a chance on a tall stiff(hopefully he can actually play) maybe it will turn out for the C's.

    Posted by GR8-1 July 12, 08 03:44 PM
  1. sign darius miles and the birdman. the celtics could use some athletic big man. they should also sign earl calloway to back up rondo.

  1. I remember when we got Robert Parrish way back when he was considered to be a project and look what happened to him? By the way, Clifford Ray mentored Parrish when they were teammates at Golden State. Maybe Clifford Ray will have the same effect on O'Brien here in Boston.

  1. I think Danny was thinking that Patrick will replace PJ Brown.I don't think so but at least when he stands up at the end of the bench, he'll block some paying customers from seeing the play. All I want is the signing of JAMES POSEY !

  1. the last time we got a center from gs it was the chief. I think O'Bryant might be the starting center by allstar break, if he gets in better shape and Perkins get hurt like he usely does O'Bryant will start and be effective with tommy t as our defensive coach and O'Bryant speed and length he will be a defensive monster mark my word

Posted by bagley to gamble July 13, 08 07:26 AM
  1. A bit slow but a decent back up if you can motivate him, and that's a big if. Not a good sign when a team with no real center won't exercise your option and then makes a $17 mil offer to Laker third-stringer Ronnie Turiaf. The world is littered with "high potential" players that talk big about getting a "fresh start" when traded and then give you nothing. Eddie Curry, Kwame Brown and Stromile Swift, to name a few. Still, he's young, cheap, and they didn't give up any players or draft picks for him, so it's a good low risk move. Just don't get your hopes up.

    Posted by Wally G July 13, 08 08:23 AM
  1. Time will tell if this was a good signing, but I see why Ainge did it. Throughout the playoffs it was obvious that the Celtics needed an athletic big man with length to back up Perkins. Maybe with the help of Clifford Ray and the work ethic of KG, he will mature into a good player.

  1. im sure he'll (o'bryant) step up his game this season coming, especially doc's gona give him minutes to prove himself that he can shut down other big men & i hope that posey stays w/ the world champs....he's the main factor playing offence & big d for miami & bostons championship quest.

Posted by kujo July 14, 08 08:13 AM
  1. Pollard was a stiff. Not even a Greg Kite wannabe! POB will be fine as a backup, with some slight upside, if he can get into shape and mentor under Cliff Ray. Re-signing Posey is the key to another deep trip into the post season for next year.

Posted by CelticPaul July 14, 08 01:19 PM
  1. Seven Footers are hard to come by and Ainge is taking a bit of a gamble here. He's no Robert Parrish! A good coaching staff should be able to teach this kid about playing the Big position. Remeber, too, Big Baby has a year under his belt with a championship to boot, which will help in the power position. The Celtics struggled a little in the front court, but it didn't cost them the championship. They'll be better next year, and this kid may surprise.
