Hornets eye Posey? Spurs tops for Maggette?

Will the Celtics be able to pull in either James Posey (41) or Corey Maggette when free agent signing begins Wednesday? (Matthew J. Lee / Globe Staff)
Could the Celtics miss out on their two biggest targets this offseason?
On the day before NBA free agents can begin signing contracts, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported this morning that the Hornets are zeroed in on former Celtics swingman James Posey. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Express-News suggested that the Spurs are at the front of the line for Corey Maggette.
In today's edition, the Times-Picayune's John Reid writes:
The Hornets are targeting Boston Celtics free agent James Posey to solve their needs at shooting guard, but whether Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower can pull off a deal is uncertain.Free agents can begin signing contracts Wednesday, and Posey is one of the most sought after on the market. Posey, who can play shooting guard and small forward, appears to be one of the Hornets' No. 1 targets. However, it likely would take a full mid-level exception offer of $5.8 million for him to consider coming to New Orleans.
Since July 1, the first day teams could begin contacting free agents, Bower has been in discussions with Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein. Posey, 6 feet 8, was the Celtics' top reserve and played a key role against the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
"Jeff and I have had a lot of conversations," Bartelstein said. "We're talking."
Bartelstein represents a handful of Celtics, including first-round draft choice J.R. Giddens and free agents Eddie House and Scot Pollard. The Hornets were previously talking with the seemingly popular agent about Jannero Pargo, a free-agent guard New Orleans hopes to bring back, according to the Times-Picayune.
Reid also writes:
Last month, the Hornets traded the draft rights of Kansas forward Darrell Arthur, whom they selected with the 27th overall pick, to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for nearly $3 million in cash to be used toward free agency. After the deal was completed, Coach Byron Scott said the Hornets are a team of now and they planned to sign a veteran in free agency who could step in right away.
The Globe's Frank Dell'Apa caught up with Paul Pierce yesterday and the captain continues to lobby for the Green to bring back both Posey and Eddie House.
From today's Globe:
"It's tough when you win a championship," Pierce said. "I've been talking with [general manager] Danny [Ainge] practically every day. Obviously, James's stock has gone up, Eddie's stock has gone up. They are the two most important guys we are trying to sign. It's difficult. Hopefully, they will return, because those guys were a big key to what we did."
In San Antonio, the Express-News's Jeff McDonald suggests Maggette entered the holiday weekend leaning toward the Spurs.
From the Express-News on July 4:
Three days into the NBA’s free agency period, Corey Maggette is still talking to teams and weighing his options. It appears the free-agent swingman is heading into the holiday weekend a little bit closer to becoming a Spur than he was before the week began.A source close to the negotiations said Thursday that, though no deal is imminent, talks between the Spurs and Maggette are serious and the interest is mutual.
The Spurs are believed to have offered Maggette a multi-year deal, starting with their $5.8 million mid-level exception. Maggette became an unrestricted free agent this week when he opted out of the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Meanwhile, published reports out of Orlando suggest the team perceived to be the Spurs’ stiffest competition for Maggette might be near dropping out of the race altogether.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Magic are formalizing a contract offer for free-agent point guard Chris Duhon, perhaps by the end of the week. In that event, Orlando would be all but forced to abandon courtship of Maggette.
The Spurs’ most significant challenger for Maggette’s services might now be the new NBA champions.
The Boston Celtics have made an offer to Maggette as well, one he told the Boston Globe on Thursday he is seriously considering. The most the Celtics could offer Maggette is the mid-level exception, same as the Spurs.
So, Celtic fans, are you concerned about losing out on both Posey and Maggette? Sound off in our discussion forum or leave a comment.

Ideally keeping Posey for another couple of years would be nice. But he wants a long term deal. I believe Maggette would be an upgrade, he would make us very scary because of his scoring ability. We have enough scorers on the squad already, he would be an added plus.
Would love to see them resign Posey. Defense is his key. Maggette would be a bigger stronger Vinnie Johnson type player generating instant offense off the bench. Looks like Posey couldbe gone, but they have to go 1 for 2 here or they are in trouble.
yes
Maggette is a tremendous scorer. He will not only help this team when it gets into offensive slumps, he will provide a spark off the bench that no sixth man has in a long time for this team. Although he isn't as skilled as Posey on the other end of the floor he is an underrated defender and his athletic size and frame will allow him to learn Thibodeau's schemes rather quickly. I think signing Maggette will also help this team going forward. Ray Allen is still a valuable asset to this team, but he is getting older and we have seen plenty of shooting guards fade away at a relatively young age in this league. Bottom line, get this guy signed because he is not only a great fit offensively, but he can spell either pierce or allen at the 2 or 3 and will buy into the team first attitude that rivers preaches.
Yes, I think Boston will miss out on both. Especially Maggette, with San Antonio offering the same deal as Boston, but with a guaranteed starting role and, even though its only a statistic, the Spurs are favored to win titles in odd-numbered years.
I think in the end the Celtics will sign either Posey or Maggette. My logic is that Posey would like to keep winning and that Maggette would like to start winning.
Though the teams trying to procure both are at the top of the food chain as far as winning teams are concerned the Celtics have 3 Stars on thier team already,so they offer no pressure for the player to come in and raise them over the top.Advantage Celtics....
Why would Magette choose San Antonio over Boston if the money is the same. Also the Hornets have the same exception as the Celtics for Posey, again why would he choose them over us. We will keep Posey.
The future for the Celtics is NOW.
Garnett/Pierce/Allen window for elite play is 2 more years.
Break the bank for Posey now. Deal with other issues later.
Losing Posey is a big deal. He's not just a "scorer." He always hits a 3 when they seem to need it most. He takes charges. He hustles. He's a locker room leader. He's not a problem. And, he's very long and they frequently use him on the other team's best scorer like Lebron, or Billups/Prince, or Kobe. Without him, they don't win the title.
I'm not sure Maggette is going to want to refine his game (scorer) and want to do all that other stuff. Maggette wouldn't start, he probably wouldn't get but 20 minutes a game, and would probably score about 10 points. If he scored more than that, that's bad because it means the guys who are supposed to be scoring (KG, PP, RA) aren't.
They should sign him to a longer contract. Screw it. They can always dump him later on if the team declines fast due to age. Trades are common. Everyone gets traded in the NBA.
Besides, this would guarantee the Celts one more shot a title for sure. Not a guaranteed title, but a guaranteed shot at the title, which is all you can ask.
No way do we miss out on one of these guys. Posey is obviously our number one. We'll offer him the mid-level and he'll take it if some dumb team doesn't overpay. If not, we give the mid-level to Maggette. Theres no shot he goes to San Antonio over Boston for the same price.
The Celtics need to sign Posey, if they dont it will be very hard to repeat as NBA Champs. On the other hand if they sign Corey Maggette with the mid-level exception then we know for a fact that he came to Boston to win! Corey is a great player and so is Posey. They need too sign one of them!
Correy Maggette should consider going 2 the phoenix suns or the 76ers.
Allen, Posey, Pierce, House, and KG was our best unit?? WOW.
I like Posey and House but replace them with Rondo and Perkins and it isnt even close. Perkins was absolutely sick this year when asked to be. He was intense but focused.
Rondo has everything but outside shooting over House. With this team, House was a nice role player for when Pierce and Allen were resting to add offense.
Yes, Posey should be resigned. He is a luxury well worth it.
The C's are fighting an uphill battle for Maggette. Even though the contract is the same the money really isn't. If both teams offer the full mil-level exception of about $5.8M, Maggette stands to make about $200K more per year with the Spurs than the Celts because of state income taxes (Texas has none). Combine it with he cost of living difference between the greater Boston area and San Antonio (about 40% less in San Antonio), and Maggette is living considerably larger in Texas. Boston probably has the better shot at winning the title because the east is weaker than the west, but Maggette gets richer going to San Antonio.
Normal people think $5.8M is more money than they know what to do with but, you can bet Maggette's agent is in his ear telling him the exact same thing I'm typing now. He'd wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't.
duhon agreed w/ knicks....are you supposed to be a journalist???
Forsberg's response:
Note that article appeared in the San Antonio paper on July 4, before Duhon verbally agreed with the Knicks.
Posey IS A MUST for this team. They have enough scoring. Scoring didn't win the Celts anything this year. Defense did. After Paul & KG (in that order by the way) Posey was the most important player on that team. No Posey, no repeat, it's that easy. And don't give me this Maggette garbage. He's a fine player, but all he does is score. No rebounds, no defense, there are 100 of him in the league. There aren't many Posey's....
Why would Magette choose San Antonio over Boston if the money is the same. ?? Well because the Spurs have been THE most successful sports franchise over the past decade. The Spurs have won 4 times as many championships as the Celtics in Corey's lifetime. No one cares about the championships that we we won over 20 years ago.
San Antonio is favored because Maggette wants to be a starter. If he signs a 2-3 year deal, his next contract will probably be the biggest of his career. If he signs to back-up Pierce/Garnett/Allen now, he will get paid like a reserve when his next contract comes up. If he starts next to Duncan, Parker, and Manu, he'll get paid like a starter on a championship caliber team when is contract is up. Signing with the C's is a career limiting maneuver.
Posey is a better fit for the Celtics' need. Who D's up on Lebron if Pierce is in foul trouble? That player is not on the Celtics' roster right now. How many reliable 3pt shooters are on the Celtics' roster? 2? If someone offers Posey the full mid-level exception, the Celtics will not match. If that happens, the free agent that most closely approximates what Posey offers is Mikael Pietrus, although we'd probably also have the money to resign House. If Danny gives Posey the full mid-level, House will be gone (and Pruitt is currently the only back-up PG on the roster).
I couldn't disagree more with the email above regarding Magette getting more money by signing with San Antonio over Boston. While I think the comments regarding state taxes and cost of living are accurate, I think the marketing opportunities in a market like Boston are 10x the available revenue stream for a player in San Antonio's market. As such, both winning and available cash should have his agent nudging him in the direction of the Celtics.
Start the rebuilding process now.Sign both Posey and Maggette. In three years time the efficiency of the big three will decline. Boston needs another back-up
true point guard and big man at the middle. how about Kwame Brown?
To Danny Ainge: You put together the best team in the NBA last year. In fact, it's one of the best teams ever! Does it make sense to dismantle the team for a couple million $$s. It doesn't make sense to many loyal Celtic fans. Sign Posey!
The point is the Celtics aren't going to use their entire mid-level exception on anyone. They need to get at least 2 guys with their money. The Maggette situation is that they have "the ability" to offer the same as the Spurs. No where has it been said that the full exception is what Boston's offering, whereas the Spurs are offering all of it. He's not choosing between the exact same money from both teams, he's just choosing between offers and if he'd take less to be with the Celtics.
a salary raise should be inorder for posey. However, if he is asking for the moon let him go. Danny, doc and paul will collectively as in the past find a good or better player.
While I agree that the defense and chemistry Posey brings is important, I kinda think that his value has maxed out here. Getting Maggette would be intriguing, much like the Patriots picking up Adalius Thomas. He has the potential to IMPROVE this team if he submits to the team concept and raises his defensive game. Remember, it was TEAM defense that won them a title. Imagine Maggette scoring 15-18 off the bench and defending Lebron. He can...he's just as big as Pierce.
The Celtics will not sign either Posey or Maggette. The mid-level exception is only one part, the number of years is more important. It is clear that Danny Ainge wants to run a tight ship with short term contracts........and he is wise in doing so. This is your defense against untimely injuries and having flexibility under the cap to constantly strive for a mix of young players and key veterans. Maggette won't fit in with the big 3, Posey is slowly becoming a journeyman, and I think Danny wants a younger player, more athletic with a future. Look down the road 2 years when the contracts of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnet are finished. This may give you a clue of the real target. The most important thing that has happened is that Boston has become a favorable place to play once again.
yes
hey guys let me say that I love celtics, but only one thing I know beleive it or not posey is very important for celtics team. if you don't agree with me, look for the game agains L.A in Boston. you let me know about posey. I know posey can do anything.
