Posey decision near?
Celtics forward James Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstien, said Sunday that there could be "something" contract-wise for his client on Monday. Bartelstien would not divulge the interested teams, but an NBA source said that the Hornets seem to be Boston's main competition. The Celtics seem willing to give Posey the full $5.5 mid-level exception, but it seems doubtful that it will be offered more than two years. The 31-year-old seems interested in getting a four-year deal. Other teams potentially interested in Posey include Detroit, Washington and Cleveland

JUST GIVE POSEY THE YEARS! WE'RE NOT GONNA WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP WITHOUT HIM!
This agent, jsut like Falk in the brand case, is trying to be the big star here and stir up a deal anywhere but Boston to make a statement and try to get teams to overpay his clients lest they hit free agency and be steered elsewhere. Either Posey has the brain to see through this and make the call, or he doesn't.
Are you kidding? Give him the 4 years!
Just give him a 3 yr deal for goodness sake and get this over with.
Danny Ainge has heard all of our rants to keep Posey. Either he'll give him the money and years or not. If not I'll bet he has someone else in mind for Posey's spot. Personally I'd still like to see James return to the Garden!
Tommy Heinson says pay him...so pay him! You're not going to find anyone else that valuable and versatile for that money!
Pay the man. Hell, overpay him. The Celtics will make it all back in the next post-season. Poz is the quintessential 6th man.
Could there be an announcement coming tonight at the debut of the team video? Posey is worth a 4 year deal. They need to have him. bhb
the Celtics came up with the 'SIXTH MAN' how could you not sign this guy ....he's as important as the 5 starters....................
You can't just give him 4 years if your the Celtics Owners. They are over the cap & the the luxury cap is dollar for dollar. It would be a huge finiancial commitement. Posey is very important & he probably is worth it for two years the next two years who knows. Do you want to pay big bucks for a reserve player when he ist 35 years old . Remember what ever you pay him it is actually double to the owners.
I like Posey but he is a fool if he signs with those other teams. They have no real chance a NBA champship. Those teams really do not play defense so Posey will be the only one who plays it. Posey do not be a fool man re-sign with the team who will be the champs for two more seasons
why don't the celts give hime the 3 yr guaranteed and make the 4th year as a team/player option based on performance... for example, if pose stays injure free or misses less than x amount of games in the 3 years during his contract then the 4th year is guaranteed. is something like that possible in the nba?
either he way, i'm certain the c's will contend with or without pose and can win it all without him.
he is only 31 years old and he still has good legs. give him the 4 years contract and let him retire in celtics' uniform
Just think what they paid that big red head a few years ago, smarten up and get it done!
Let him Retire as a Celtic!! He is an important piece of our puzzle!! Sign him Danny!! He's a great defender, scorer off the bench. Give him 4 more years!! 4 MORE YEARS!!
After going over 20 yrs between titles, it's worth overpaying Posey and giving him more years than is wise to keep this team together and take another shot at the title NOW! (Hey it's not my money...)
Posey is huge to this team - but if they could sign him to a two year deal - he would be off the books just in time for the bumper crop of free agents in 2010.
If there is a guy to be 'over-paying' in the final year of a deal, its Posey. I understand that he may go from the 6th man to the 8th man in year 4, but he's one of the few players who would still be immensely valuable to a team. (Look at the contract Scalabrine got as basically a practice guy). Posey, even after he stops being able to keep up with the smaller wing players, will still be immensely valuable because of his hussle and craftiness (plus his wingspan doesn't get smaller as he gets older). Give him the extra year! This is the mid-level exception, and last time I checked it was made for someone exactly like Posey. Let's get it done!
i think the celtics will sign him maximum 5.5M for two years and will have an option on the 3rd year worth maximum too. i think this is the best way to have POSEY back.. i think posey likes BOSTON and BOSTON likes POsey..
What if each Celtic fan sent the organization $10 to sign Posey to a 3/4 year deal? I'd write my check if it meant the difference between potential titles the next 3 years. Could we do this? Is that legal?
Don't start crying how much it will cost the owners..They won the CHAMPIONSHIP and a ton of money that goes with it.. Give Posey the years and get on with #18!!
If Scalabrine can make 3 mil a year (god who authorized that garbage?) then posey should be making 12-13 million/year. Really. We need a hustler. That's all that team showed last year, great amounts of defense and hustle. IF we lose Posey, we better get Matt Barnes. His defense is a tad softer but he hustles just as hard, plus he can knock down that clutch 3 when he gets his minutes.
Other Atlantic teams are becoming mor viable (Philly and Toronto) and keeping Posey amounts to status quo...it's a tough call but you can't weaken the team "dynamic"...consider the fact he was "underpaid" for the champioship year and based upon that, I find some way to get the deal done!!!! He became a Laker killer in the finals....that's worth bucks right there......
First Danny doesn't offer Posey the full amount of money the C's have to spend. Then he disses him by offering the full amount to Maggette. We've waited 22 years to hang another banner. For the Leprechaun's sake, give him four years and then resign House. I haven't got 22 years left to wait for another Championship.
Ainge, don't be stupid just pay the man. Without him banner 17 would not be in the rafters. Brian S. was a waste of money so if you paid him why not pay Posey who is still a great player. If we sigh James and Eddie we are going to win #18. Get it done Ainge you are kiiling all of us!!!!!!!!!!
James Posey is only 6 months older than Paul Pierce. I guess my point is that if Paul is going to be around for 3 or 4 more years, then why isn't he going to be considered too old to compete? I know that James isn't Paul, but the silliness of the age thing is not really an excuse not to give him at least a 3 year contract. He runs and plays just as hard as anyone on the team, even the younger guys. He is a professional and complete team player. I think Danny Ainge has other things in mind that we are not hearing about.
To me, a two year contract for this man is a complete insult to his abilities and professional attitude on the court. I wouldn't have any ill feelings about James if he decides to take a longer contract with another team. He knows he's worth it, and so does everyone in Boston. Danny is blinded by $$$ signs.
Why are people worried about the owners and their $$ ? Fans stuck with the C's for 22 years while they floundered about. We deserve to have another full run at the title. Believe me, the owners were NOT thinking about our wallets when they were "championship driven" and producing one horrible team after another. These guys have plenty of money. Show the fans some love and sign the dude.
We need James and Eddie back to win another championship. Who ever is the blogger for this show Ainge this and tell him to get the deal done!!!!
boston better resign posey before the lakers do, then the lakers will win the 2008-2009 NBA Championships!!
I'd like to have him back, but there is a reason he's been with half a dozen NBA teams. He is a role player. And the C's need to be more careful how they tie up future contracts.
2 years at the midlevel sounds fair
PAY POSE THE $$$$$ FOR 4 YEARS...HE IS THE SAME AGE AS PP KG & RA... AND PLAYS HALF THEIR MINUTES...SO HE'LL LAST THE 4 YEARS MORE EASILY THAN THE BIG-3 AND IS JUST AS VITAL TO OUR SUCCESS...DANNY MUST NOT DO WHAT PAT RILEY NOW REGRETS...LETTING POSEY GO FREE!!!!!
The Posey signing is a message, or a continuation of the message that replacing PJ Brown with a stiff sends:
If Wyc and Ainge are going to quibble with a key member of the title run over what is NBA pocket change and years, then they're clearly satisfied with one title and we're moving back toward the summers of asset disbursement without return.
Any game you look at in the playoffs Posey had a defining play. I know it's at a cost for the Celtics, but if their goal is to have a chance to repeat HE IS A MUST SIGN. The other side of the equation is keeping him out of the hands of a competitor in the playoffs! Let's hope the Celtics get it done. We now see how hard it is to keep a team together if the 5 free agents don't return , there could be 5 new players on next's year's team. Come on POSEY IF NOONE ELSE PLEASE!
I like Posey for 2 years, not for 4. I know we love the Johnny Damon's and Pedro's of the world but I think ownership wants to win now AND later. Signing Posey to take up cap space when the big 3 comes off the books is not a good idea. Better to have a boatload of cap to sign a max deal with a DWade than to have an aging 6th man who can't create his own shot weighing down the books.
IMO, no Posey, no championship! Give James what he wants so we have a chance for a repeat next year.
We need Posey not Posers!
I can't believe this. Players like Posey (or Horry) "age" well because of their limited playing time and the fact that wing players don't take a pounding like 1's and 4's do.
Pay the guy...give him a 4-year deal. We could win another ring or 2, and THAT will pay the bills in ticket sales, TV rights, and jerseys for years to come. I hope the Celtics ownership are not cheaping out on this (again).
With Danny's reluctance to offer Posey what he is worth it kind of brings back memeories of the old Ainge! Hey Danny you have made a few really good decisions lately...don't blow this one...SIGN THE MAN!
We need Posey that is the bottom line . So Danny signed him and let's get this 18th chip . Danny your the greatest. Celtics Die Hard
Danny: Your options are running out, give Posey the year before you loose him and loose a good clubhouse teammate. Everyone loves him don't breakup the chemistry of the team. What are you waiting for.
Danny: Your options are running out, give Posey the year before you loose him and loose a good clubhouse teammate. Everyone loves him don't breakup the chemistry of the team. What are you waiting for.
Pls. Danny, sign Posey. You'll never regret it, when there are five minutes left in a key playoff game, and he is out on the floor harassing the other team's best player on defense, and nailing big shots to pull it out!!! Think of it...... five minutes to go, who else would you rather have than Posey?
Here's an idea give him the 4 years he's asking for and after 3 years if you don't want him anymore than he will be a nice trading chip b/c he will be in the final year of his contract.
You have to sign Posey b/c if they don't resign him then they will sign T.A. and we will be forced to watch him dribble the ball up the court. We all know how that story goes....UGH!!!
james 5/25 eddie 4/20 just how i see it there needed that's 25 million for james 20 million for eddie he'll be splitting time with rajohn and has more confidence than rajohn and is a better shooter. chris from hyannis mass.
Give him the four years. It's basketball. EVERYONE (except Paul Pierce!) gets traded. KG, Kobe, Pippen, Barkley, Kareem, Wilt, Doc. J. If the contract doesn't look good in two years, it becomes an "expiring contract." You trade him for a pick and a stiff.
You figure he has two years of really good play left, one more year of decent, and who knows what year 4 brings. On the upside, it could be four years of great play.
Either way, if it goes bad after two, you go back to "trade him."
Ask the Big three to chip in a couple of bucks!!! It's a drop in the bucket.
giving posey more than 3 years would be irresponsible on the part of management. you have to think about the future not just right this moment. we cant have posey under contract after Ray (FA in '10), Paul ('11), and KG ('12) are potentially gone
ilove you posey...debbie gives good head
he wants four years. take it as a compliment Danny. he wants long term in BOSTON. the guy pretty much won a title for you, reward him and give him what he wants. i don't wanna see him guarding pierce come late may.
Incredible. Haven't you guys learned anything from the Pat's? Posey is a good player and worth two years min- maybe three. He is a piece of the puzzle- not a key piece. The Celts have obviously made a fair offer. They should ignore what the agent says. No one knows if Posey has an offer for more than two years.
If the season ended after the Atlanta or Cleveland series you would not be pushing so hard for Posey. Leon Powe was an early playoff star and PJ Brown was big against Cleveland. Your simply remembering the last thing you saw- the LA series when Posey was excellent- and playing right into his agent's hands.
I might go three years for Posey but not four. Despite what some of you have written, he is no Paul Pierce and what this has to do with vastly overpaying Scalabrine is beyond me.
has anyone heard whats going on with eddie house? i have never seen a guy so valuable to a team get treated so bad. between not getting minutes most of the first 2 rounds in the play offs and now not even sure if they offered him amything i can't blame the guy if he leaves. i dont wanna see him in another uniform come late may either.
Sign Posey and Tony Allen. Think Defense!!!
"Pay the man his money"
This isn't about the money. The C's would gladly pay him and give him the years. It's about Cap flexibility.
This is a tough one. I'd give him three years at the max.
3 years 20 mil 4th year team/player option. Go Posey!!
bottom line, posey steals the ball from prince....give him the money.
It's a no brainer, if you have the money...and you want another shot at the title next year, pay him. If you want to take a year or more off, let him go. It's about the chemistry of the team and getting to the level needed to win the ECF. He brings that. We fans don't have to cough up the money so we say PAY HIM & MOVE ON.
First of all, Maggette and Posey have very little in common including the sizes of their respective egos. Second, while I understand everyone willing to die for James right now, it's easy to forget that he is wildly inconsistent and we ought to keep that in mind. Third and last, Matt Barnes over the next three years will probably end up being a cheaper and better choice regardless of what this group seems to think.
Everyone has always talked about "The Big Three" - as they should. But... without James Posey, the celts do not win the title. He may have been the most vital part of that team. Night in and night out you knew what you were going to get from Pose, hard nose defense which would turn a game around. If they do not sign him, they don't make it out of the second round. Corey Maggette's value is not worth 1/2 of what James Posey gives the C's. What has Maggette won (when he's not injured) ? Four years is worth another title to me! Sign him!!!
but if Ainge gives him anything more than 2 yrs he is going to take up cap room for the 2010 FA summer. We would be screwed in the long term. Ainge is trying to have this team in a good stiuation after the BIG 3 is on its way out. Ppl need to look at it from a business stand point and not a fan. Look at what Theo did with Damon and Pedro. Both left for money and long term deals and never have been the player that they were in boston. Posey needs to sign a 2 yr deal get two more rings and retire!
We don't need posey if its for too much money/years. There is always turnover in sports. When Pats let milloy go, people said we couldn't win without him. Ditto Ty Law. New players fill the roles. Posey's a great defender/clutch shooter, but if someone of the caliber of say Josh Childress would accept less years/money it should be considered. Powe's contract is coming up, and Rondo should expect a large increase by the time his is up. There is always the trade deadline to shore up the bench. Is Posey great? Yes. Is it impossible to replace clutch scoring/defense off the bench? No.
lolllllll posey is not gonna go to celtics and even if he did they wouldnt be champs and posey knows that LAKERSSSSSSSSSSSS are gonna dominate for the next 4 years and bring the rings to the west so yah
lolllllll posey is not gonna go to celtics and even if he did they wouldnt be champs and posey knows that LAKERSSSSSSSSSSSS are gonna dominate for the next 4 years and bring the rings to the west so yah
PAY THIS GUY CELTICS LETS NOT REVERT BACK TO LETTING OUR GOOD PEOPLE GO FOR MONEY
BRING BACK POSEY AND HOUSE TO GO BACK TO BACK AND THREE PEAT
Danny pull the trigger this guys brings defense, 3 point shooting, and the other guys respect him. When he left Miami they all missed him and the team fell apart. It wouldn't be the same without James hugging all the starters before every game, what other 6th man does that?
They should just give up on him and let him sign with detroit
I think, they also have to keep going after tony allen , we all know what this guy can do!
He was the man who put up points for the c's when paul pierce was injured last season. It's just the injury of tony allen what is keeping him cautious . Once he is confident again he can be a thread. I think he is to much underrated. But as an international fan and for as I know and I watched posey playing, this man is amazing. He is defense is so highly devolped through his carreer and can knock down crucial 3's. Sure I would go for the guy but they shouldn't miss the chance to get tony allen as House back. The celtic's have to go for a new championship not for one year but for a couple of years now they are at their best, still on top!!! And with tony alleen they still support the talented youth also
i for one, looked for possey every game. he picked up the slack when needed.
sign him our face him next year,!
Unless it is announced today, Posey will sign with another team. Posey has enough respect to the C's to NOT announce a signing with another team on the same day as a big public appearance for the DVD release. Thus, he will wait to announce that he has signed with another team (my bet is Cleveland).
If he were to sign with the C's, today would be the perfect timing, etc. But its 6:10 pm, so its not looking good.
I' ve been a celtic fan for many years- have seen them not pay and lose Paul Silas who could have assured those teams a couple more championships. Have seen them trade a future star for Rodney Rogers and not sign him. Please sign Posey.
Why is this decision not made? Sign Posey and keep it moving!! He has PERFORMED and DEMONSTRATED his worth, we are talking business and from championship perspective according to CELTIC's Fans. We have an unusual team - they are all gentlemen on and off the court. Posey earned his rings individually and collectively. Take a vote from the fans, you know the people who have been loyal, and enjoy watching our team beat the odds and DO their job......WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. POSEY IS A MAJOR LINK, for this ERA!!! There are too many "IF's" in the market. ..4 years WHATEVER $$$ get it done and don't ALLOW any other team take one of our strengths!!
Posey is the key. Even from Barcelona, in Spain we can see it. Give him the money and the years, please!!!! I bet my hand that Posey at 35 is still a key player with his intensity and desire of playing. It's a must have player, Danny...
Lakers are going to steal him from you. hahahaha!!!
The Celtics won the championship this year based on defense and rebounding. Their offense delivered selectively enough to support their foundation of defense.
Posey was at times a microcosm of that defense and team play, with very specific moments, and was at times a macrocosm, with raw defense that periodically dominated.
Players like James, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, and others are only going to get better as they approach their prime. Boston's defense at the 2 and 3 spots with Posey, Pierce, and Ray Allen was exceptional, but also synergistic, as they all had different styles, that gave James, Bryant, and others a different look, making it much more difficult for the opponent to adapt. If Posey goes, Pierce's and Allen's defense is significantly less effective. I happen to love Tony Allen's defense if he were to resign, but he's not long enough to play the 3 defensively. He's a 1 and a 2 defensively.
I would have accepted if Maggette somehow came to Boston, because at times Boston looked old and inept offensively in the playoffs. He would have been an exceptional offensive weapon off the bench, and would have allowed Pierce and Ray Allen to play reduced minutes (perhaps 32-34 minutes per game each). I would have taken that gain, even if it meant losing Posey, to somewhat rebalance Boston, because teams will adapt next year to Boston's defense by a factor of 10-20%, so Boston needs to offset that with an offensive weapon.
But with the Maggette dream not turning into a reality, the resigning of Posey for 3 years is a necessity.
get posey......4 years.....plus back to back-three peat for the celtics......done deal.....
.....IN DANNY " WE TRUST "...............either way the CELTS will be AWESOME next year......BOTTOM LINE......everyone looks better when they are playing alongside 3 HALL OF FAMERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! i'm from the PHILIPPINES. I'm a loyal Celtics fan since the BIrd Days and how i really cherished this 17th win! i agree with the fans that Posey is very vital with the C's...Posey has nothing else to prove, has won championships with Miami, he's just looking for security, we all do, i respect that in you..in fairness to the management, i bet they are doing what they can to sign him...it's the luxury tax that kinda hinders it all...its unfair yes but its not impossible to work it out.... Posey, i respect you, your work ethics are tremendous, i only wish you could help the C's with more championships for as long as you all could..Bless you all
I hope that these great comments from the best fans in world get to Danny! After waiting for 22 years to win with just the right combination, you would think that this same combination would compete again for the title for the next few years! Posey knows what it takes to win so pay him the money he he has earned! ......3rd generation Celtic fan.
this is a very good idear let all celtics fans send $ 10 to the organisation the can sign james posey four years deal he deserve it.
