Posey or Maggette?

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff July 4, 2008 11:39 AM

On Thursday's Globe 10.0, Bob Ryan and Charlie Pierce debate who'd they rather see the Celtics sign: James Posey or Corey Maggette. Follow the link below to check out the video.

(Apologies, the wrong video clip was linked earlier. The correct clip is now appearing. Many thanks to the commenters who pointed out the error).

  1. how is anyone supposed to take charlie pierce seriously? So Jeter is going out with Madonna? I think his facts are actually worse than his outfit...but his humor is even worse than that. Does he really get paid? That's sad.

  1. I feel either player should will work out fine ....The thing here to remember is just as long that we are able to get that production from that 6th spot again is the important factor...I still like Posey though..Why not he is a winner...Why change now...JUST GET ONE OF THEM...

  1. Need to find a way to get both. Chances at champion ships don't come around to often. Garnet , Allen and Pierce aren't getting any younger. One choice would be Maggette because of age.i

  1. Posey... He is a proven winner and just has a knack for making the right plays. Every good team needs a utility player who does the dirty work and is a proven difference maker: Draws Charges, hits the key three pointers, makes the key steals, plays good defense and spreads the defense on the opposite end of the floor. He did it in Houston, continued it in Memphis, perfected it in Miami and made some pivotal plays in Boston to win his second ring.

However, if the C's can't sign Posey, Magette could be a good aquisition to the team. He is very talented and a proven scorer but, the big question is will he remain happy playing behind Pierce and Allen.

  1. This video is not a debate of "James Posey or Corey Maggette" It appears that that part of the video is what comes after the end of this video.

  1. I can't believe anyone would actually debate this question; Corey Maggette is a player who is just below All Star quality. In fact, I'm not sure that if he had not played almost his entire career as a Clipper, in the Western Conference, where All Star voting competition is more rigorously contested, he would not be an All Star already. (Look at what being traded from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference did for Mike Dunleavey's all but dead career.)

I think Maggette's career is fairly parallel to that of Richard Jefferson and Jefferson is pulling down a little over $14 million/year for the next 3 years; jefferson is being overpaid. (BTW, Jefferson has been voted to the All Star team, already, and his stats are actually not as good as Magette's when corrected for time played per game.) Because of a plethora of free agents on the market this year and the shortage of competitive teams with cap space, all that Magette can earn (from a potential contender at this early juncture) is the mid level exemption. If on the other hand, Philadelphia were to lose Andre Iguodola to free agency, and Magette would choose to play for the noncontending 76er's, he could probably earn between $9 and 11 million. A similar offer may be on the way from Golden State if Brand turns down their $90 million offer.

Posey, on the other hand would be worth (perhaps) $4-5 million/yr. for 1-2 years if this were a regular market ( but it's a buyer's market so he is not worth even that much); and that is only if you could guarantee his playing at the same level that he played this year. Posey has a tendency to play hard for a season and then fade. I like Posey and love what he did for their championship run but Maggette is a player you can plug in to the lineup if Allen or Pierce go down and you don't lose all that much. On a regular basis, Magette could see 25-30 minutes/game, assuming Pierce is allowed to play 35-37 minutes and Allen 32-35 minutes in order to preserve them for the post season: the rest of maggette's time could come while playing Rondo, Magette, Pierce, Allen, and garnett.

Since it is very unlikely that Maggette's agent will let him sign for $5.8 million/yr. when he is clearly worth between 30 and 60% more, this argument is merely academic.

  1. Chris- Fantastic points and way more thought out than 99% of discussion board posts. I agree that people are forgetting the very real pssibility that either Pierce or Allen could miss time due to injury and severely hamper the offense. Maggette could open things up for post players because he would command defensive attention much more than Posey...not to say he doesn't merit some attention, just not nearly as much as Maggette would. Sadly though, there is NO WAY he would settle for the mid-level exception.

  1. There are plenty of good reasons to debate this question. In basketball we often look at statistics to evaluate a player's value to a team and talent relative to other players in the league. Clearly, statistics don't tell the whole story, however. Celtics fans know better than anybody that what Garnett brought to the table this year was far superior to what you might glean from the statistics. In other words, you might get similar production from a guy like Chris Bosh, but the Celtics don't win the championship with him instead of Garnett.

I think the comparison between Maggette and Jefferson is an appropriate one. But let me draw another one between Posey and Robert Horry. These guys are not the ones who start the games, but there always on the floor in the last five minutes. They are guys who play beyond their talent when the game is on the line. They have a mental toughness that makes a contribution that can't be measured by statistics. And they win whereever they go. That's why you want to keep Pose.

Also, Posey is great because he doesn't need the ball in his hands to make a contribution. His talents compliment those of the other wing players rather than duplicating them.

Having said that, Maggette looks like a plan B if Posey decides to skip town.

  1. Posey is NEEDED at the core. PAY HIM. KEEP HIM. DO Whatever it takes to keep him.

  1. I favor re-signing Posey because he integrated well with the Celtics this year and because having him would add to the team's stability. Remember, this year was the first year with Boston for all but Pierce, Rondo, Perkins and Scalabrine. Imagine what they can do if they are together for a second year!

Magritte is obviously a fine player, but, as with Sam Cassell, integration is a risk. I am opposed to re-signing Sam, because, in my humble opinion, he wasn't with the program -- too much shooting, not enough enabling everyone else. If Posey goes elsewhere -- and as a highly skilled, tough, lunchbucket journeyman he is likely to have more money offered than the max the Celtics can pay under the mid-level exception -- then Magritte is very much worth considering.

  1. We won the Championship with DEFENSE Maggette might as well be from Europe with his defensive skills. We must approached this issue from two perspectives what do the Celtics need and who best fits that bill. Value, etc. is relative

The Celtics need a good sub that will offer great defense and good offense. Posey fits that bill Maggette does not. We will suffer if we lose Ray or Paul for an extended period and Maggette would be a great addition in that role but what do we lose on the defensive end. Also who is going to inspire the starters as Posey did before tip off all season

Here is a statement but for James Posey we do not have number 17

Posey came up with huge plays while shutting down opposing players. This type of defense rarely shows up on the stat line but always rears itself in the win column. Who can forget the Posey poke which sealed game 6 against the Pistons. His three's in game 4 of the Lakers series are what created the record-setting come back all keyed from the defensive end.

The big three must understand his value they must lobby to see that he remains.

House should be kept as well, granted he is not a ball handler but he is a great team player
