Celtics bring in Miles
The Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent forward Darius Miles to a non-guaranteed contract.
"He's coming to training camp and he's going to try to prove that he can make the team," said Celtics general manager Danny Ainge. "He has come in for a couple of workouts. He'll try to make the team somehow."
Miles, a 6 foot 9 inch, 235-pound forward out of East St. Louis High School, has career averages of 10.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.15 blocks in 412 career games. He was originally drafted with the third overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.
Miles said he is excited for the opportunity to play with the defending champions.
“I’ve watched the Boston Celtics play a lot last year and loved what I saw in their teamwork and chemistry on the court and it’s the team that I want to try to resume my career with.” Miles said in a press release. “I am excited about having an opportunity to play on a team that I feel my personality fits with and a team that can have great success on the court.”
Miles last played for the Portland Trail Blazers during the 2005-06 season when he averaged a career high 14.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 40 games. Miles missed all of the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons due to microfracture surgery on his right knee. Jason Kidd, Anfernee Hardaway, and Amare Stoudemire are players who have undergone similar procedures.
Ainge feels confident that Miles is completely healthy.
"He's healthy. He has a great attitude. He's ready to resume his career," said Ainge.

if Miles returns to any type of the player he was, at least sklly and ability wise, its another steal for Danny and the C's.. KG should be able to handle the mental aspect of D-miles deficiencies.. they wont let him be a prima donna!!
extremely excited about this signing
Why not give him a shot? He might give the C's 15-20 mins of quality energy a night.
first. welcome miles.
It's your typical low risk, high reward-potential deal. Boston sports teams are getting very good at them!
James who?????
This guy will make us forget we lost Posey, IF he is healthy!!
Can't be mad at an UNGUARENTEED contact from a past top 3 pick that isn't named Kwame or Darko
Good luck with Miles. All I know is that Blazer fans are happy to see the back of that lazy malcontent.
maybe we can sign Arvydus Sabonis next.... yuk
If he's healthy, Miles could be the comeback player of the year! Again if he's healthy for the entire season!
type of player he was? an athletic guy w/ little valuable basketball knowledge..? i'll be surprised if he's on the team when the season opens
See what happens when you win....you get players like D-miles for those kinda figures......
Nothing to lose. He can be a good defender, rebounder and scorer when he wants to. That locker room will keep him in check, and if not, they'll show him the door.
As a Blazers fan who has followed the whole D-Miles drama, all I can say is that we definitely did not miss him the last few years. Perhaps having a non-guaranteed contract will incent him to actually put some effort into his job, but there's a very high potential for him to poison the clubhouse if Pierce and KG don't keep him in line from the outset.
Solid addition to the ballclub. If he can give us 15-20 min and average 5-10 pts per and become even a semi-solid lock-down defender, then its pretty much a steal for short duckets no less. Good signing Danny Boy
If he sticks in beantown, the Blazers will be PISSED! He'll count almost $10 mil against their cap this year if he plays in more than 15 games. Oh, he's also suspended for a few games to start the year too. Other than that I like the idea of hm in Celtic Green. He idolizes Garnett, so that should take care of the immaturity issue, now all they have to worry about is his knee.
What? Posey was incredible....
We will miss him all year long, guaranteed.
If Darius works out with Celtics, Danny Ainge will be back to back manager of the year.
/taps head with fists
Well, ala Manny busting his butt for the Dodgers now (after his own malcontent actions here this year, and in years past), maybe Miles will try to "prove his critics wrong" and become a solid role player for the C's.
It's a no lose situation, right?
The Celtics don't need any luck on this one. Unlike the Trailblazers who signed him a guarranteed contract, Darius will be gone if he doesn't deliver, without losing a cent.
I think it's a good signing and he adds height and length to the team. He's experienced, can get his own shot and has a ton of athletic ability. Can he defend like Posey did? Probably not but he has the ability (in my opinion) and he'll be getting his butt slapped by KG and the gang to stay on his man or do wjhatever the scheme calls for. I like the deal...at least on paper. Low risk too. I bet he plays great and we love him.
worst NBA punk of the last 10 years
actually, blazers fans are probably pissed since Miles getting onto an active roster means that Portland is on the hook for the rest of his bloated contract that they inexplicably signed him to.
Miles is very fast! He could steal 25 - 30 bases a year.
All Miles does is smoke weed and go to strip clubs. I'm sure the local drug dealers and dancers are very happy he is coming to town!
Be very careful about this one...his track record is he is injury-prone and a definite negative influence on and off the court.
If Darius is truly healthy the C's have a steal. His past baggage is just that now, a thing of the past. At just 26 years old his best years are ahead of him. He has already signed a lucrative deal and "gotten paid", now is his time to contribute on a winning team.
No risk contract, a guy with something to prove.
seems like a good combo.
Man you guys in Beantown are gonna love this lazy pothead. I give him about a week in training camp before they send him packing. his knee is shot, he never took rehabing it seriously and the guy doesn't even like basketball. I don't care if his salary goes back on the Blazers books, as long as I never have to see him in Rip City again.
oops.. type of player he was on the way to becoming.. or people thought he would be.. kid has some skills.. but so did/does Gerald Green.. maybe the KG connection will work wonders
If he takes Scalabrine's spot on the roster it will be the best move of the summer.
HA HA HA!
Having just moved to Boston from Portland, I say have a great time with Miles.
First, you're #$(@$ the Blazers as he has this enormous contract that was going to be off their books if he stayed "retired". Second, three doctors all over the country have classified his knee as being a "career ending injury". It has taken him more than two years to recover from microfracture surgery.
Third, he absolutely destroyed the chemistry in the Blazer locker room when he was there.
So, yeah, have fun with Miles and thanks for $#%@)$ over my Blazers.
At just 26 years old, he has already gotten "paid" (thanks to Paul Allen). If he now wants to be a part of a winning team with great team chemistry the opportunity is his. The physical skills have never been a question, the other garbage has. He's grown up and ready to be the versatile defensive stud he was supposed to be years ago. Again the kid is just 26!
New York was excided about getting Zack Randolph, (another player portland was more than happy to see go) and we all see how ZBO and the Knicks have faired.
Maybe Portland has a reason for releasing the players it does.
Darius is a loser.
Everybody talks about his attitude, his laziness, his off the court problems, etc. That wont be a problem here because the team will just cut him if he acts up, and he knows that. He is looking to re-establish himself in the league. If he does that, the Celtics have a steal, if he doesn't they drop him faster than a Laker fast break.
Perfect contract for Miles. Make him earn it. What do the C's have to lose? He doesn't pan out, we pan him didly. Another great job, Danny!
Some counterpoints for the Blazer fans.
1. We are not the Knicks. That was a bad situation before Randolph even got there.
2. Miles is not Randolph. In other words, he is not coming here to be the star of the team. He's a non-guaranteed invitee trying to make the roster. He will not be poisoning anything, it's not his team to poison like the Blazers were.
3. He's older now. He's no longer the hotshot immortal kid with more money than he knows to do with. He is now a young adult who hopefully realizes what he has to lose, and that he is being given a tremendous opportunity.
This is a no-brainer for the Celtics. They bring in a guy that has potential and a need to prove himself. If it works out great, if not they cut him. Bellichickian is it not?
Can't find anything wrong with this move. Ainge has helped replace PoZ and PJ with Giddens, O'Bryant, and Miles. I think that is about as good as you can do, for as cheap as possible. Hopefully at least one of those three is in the rotation this year, that is all that we can realy expect right now.
Celts still have the best team in basketball. If Miles wants to get rich he will stay in line and play defense.
A few thoughts on this signing:
1. Re: chemistry concerns. I have a hard time believing this guy will come in and be able to "disrupt team chemistry" in the locker room. KG and Pierce rule that locker room. Some dude who hasn't played in 2 years isn't going to have enough sway to disrupt the mix.
2. Incentive. If Miles is healthy enough to play - which is the big IF in this whole equation - then logic dictates he will have tremendous incentive to have a big comeback season. If he puts up solid #'s (I'm guessing he plays, at most, 20 minutes per game), he'll get a 2-3 year contract from someone next summer.
To a lesser extent, Tony Allen has the same incentive.
3. The Celtics are the champs, and can afford to roll the dice. If Miles doesn't work out, no loss. But if he is healthy and performs (see #2), it's a brilliant move.
I agree this is a gamble. But how much? if he's healthy he's got tremendous talent. If he's not healthy, we send them down the road. We have a Veteran team with quality leaders. If he cuts up, they will cut him down.
Yes it's a gamble, but how much.
If he's healthy and can produce it's a steal. if not he's gone.
if he's a jerk, he's gone
This is more about Danny Ainge messing with the Blazers than Darius Miles having any chance of helping out the Celtics.
In his prime he was a fraction of his potential, it would require a personality transplant for him to make the team after years of bad attitude, marijuana and behavior that gave Portland the label "Jailblazers".
Did the article mention he still has a 10-game suspension for substance abuse to fill? That is from recent history!
No, this is a different strategy between Danny Ainge and the Blazers. He wants to scalp 8 figures from Portland's salary cap come free agency time next year. Darius Miles might play his 15 games, even to Boston's detriment.
It's personal with Danny and the Blazers. Darius Miles, like always, is just the tool.
I hear that if Miles plays 10 games (after he sits 10) with the Celts, then he goes back on the Blazers payroll - at least in terms on cap space.
miles healthy another treat to get some back door dunks while the opposing team is trying to stop the thr33. mismatch scenarios all over the court rondo, ray, pierce, miles, and kg 2 points and the ball back all day-illegal d-fence and it takes the big man out what center will stop kg in the perimeter he will blow right by him or pierce will work more on the box they collapse on the box ray for three.
Low risk potentially high reward. If he does not cut it , cut him. If he pans out could have a good upside for the Celts. Definitely not a "character guy", but neither were Corey Dillon, Randy Moss or Rodney Harrison supposed to be before they joined the Pats, but they worked out fine. Let's give the guy a chance.
Miles is a cancer! The rest of you celtic fans need to WAKE-UP. He was never even a decent defender and now he has lost his lateral movement. Posey was a gr8 3ball shooter. Miles was never a 3 shooter. How does a guy who has been out of the league for 2 years, was lazy when in it, and a desention diva inspire these amazing posts. He could not make many college teams let alone the Celtics
Extremely NERVOUS about this addition. Darius has been a headache everywhere he has been. The ONLY thing Celtics can hope for is that he has grown up over the last two years and/or KG/Paul/Ray can get inside his head. I just don't see him lasting with the team. Thank God it's not guaranteed and that he they won't have to rely on him.
all he has to do is serve his 10 game suspension and then sit on the Celtics bench for 10 games and he becomes a major salary cap headache for the Blazers. The next time Ray Allan goes into a shooting slump, move Pierce to the 2, Darius to the 3, with Rondo KG and either Perkins or Powe and they present a pretty serious defensive look for someone to deal with. And on the break, either miles goes to the hoop for a slam or pierce stops and shoots the three. How do you defend that?
Funny how people here (mainly the trolls), even some uninformed Celtic fans think they know a person by what they read. Calling a 26 yr old kid all kinds of names from thug, to punk to this to that is just pathetic. NONE of you know this man personally and to attack someone's character by what you've read or what he may have done or not done on your favorite team is quite lame. He is attempting to come back from a career ending injury. Instead of wishing him the best he is banished to hell because he chose not to end his career with an injury.
I for one happens to be very happy for him, make it or not. No, he was not one of my favorite players, but I cant recall any incidents that would qualify him as some of you have labeled him. Get off of your high horses, get out from in front of the computer and make a life for yourselves. I GUARANTEE you that none of you who called him those names behind your the privacy of your keyboard would meet him in the parking lot and call him those same names. PUNKS could be a good name to classify you. Again, I'm sure its mostly blazer fans that's pissed that it could possibly work out. Like many here have stated, if it doesnt cool, but to call a man names because he maybe young and dumb (which I'm sure most of you weren't at one point and still may be) is really not called for. To voice your opinion on the PLAYER is one thing but people like you guys that hide behind your keyboards and call other humans uncalled for names is....well there's a name for you as well....here kitty, kitty, kitty.
I love the Blazer comments. As if Miles were to blame for that sinking ship. Gerald Green comparisons don't fit. Miles can play the game. Health and motivation are reasonable concerns - both of those can and may have improved - inlike Gerald Green or the Blazers.
"I hear that if Miles plays 10 games (after he sits 10) with the Celts, then he goes back on the Blazers payroll - at least in terms on cap space.
Paul"
Ha ha! No wonder those Blazers fans are scared to death that Miles may be successful with the Cs. First off, best case scenario is Boston will get a deep bench again. Second, Portland may have to pay him for the pleasure of helping the Cs hunt for banner 18! I love it!! Worst case scenario and he becomes a goat the Cs lose nothing! Thanks Portland Trailblazers!!
Darius Miles could have been an all-star. At 26, he still has potential to be a really good player, but only with the right attitude. If he gets act together and works hard for the Celtics, not only he can be the comeback player of the year, but also the sixth man of the year. He can be THAT good. This is a great opportunity for him to show everyone why he was drafted right out of high school. Good Luck.
This is basically a "no risk" proposition. The only way Darius Miles could destroy the Celtics locker room is if he sets it on fire. As was said in an earlier post, the locker room belongs to K.G., Pierce, Ray Allen and Doc Rivers. I seriously doubt that Darius Miles is going to dictate to any of them. Good move Danny.
Tar and Feathers anyone? Holy Cow...just back away from the ledge and take a deep breath....much more going on than anyone of us could even imagine. Take the best and worste of what had been posted and the likely truth is somewhere in the middle.
1. He will be controlled
2. He has amazing potential, if healthy
3. He might see this as his last chance
4. Would at best be a role player 12 - 15 mpg
5. Can't contribute or control himself he's gone
6. Port the Trail Blazers (priceless)
Just relax...this will be interesting. If it doesn't work out, we all will have a great laugh.
I think this signing is shameful. The NBA is incestuous and you can be sure that other teams are making note of this move by the defending champs. The Celtics may be on top of the world now, but I'll bet that other back offices around the league will see this as a dirty move with not much up side and will treat the Celtics back office accordingly. The description by an independent doctor of one of his knees was literal bone on bone. The guy is probably going to hurt himself and if he plays more that 10 games it certainly will hurt the Blazers.
Danny Ainge is just mad because he got screwed over in the Telfair for the eventual Brandon Roy pick. Yep, he lucked out with the Garnett trade, and you guys are the 1 Time Champs, for now, but the Portland Trail Blazers will be the next great dynasty. So what if he goes back on the Blazer cap, it's for one more year, we'll still have the most cap room in the NBA the following year.....hmmm can you say Le Bron in the city of Roses? They already have three superstars in Oden, Aldridge, and Roy and a budding star in Rudy Fernandez, now add LeBron, Wade, Kobe or even Granger, the rest of the NBA will be screwed for the next decade. Trail Blazers, NBA Champs 2010-2020, AT LEAST!
Blazer fan here.
1) I agree the move is more to eff with the Blazers than anything else.
2) I also agree it's a low-risk move. Nothing but up-side in a non-guaranteed contract for a guy that, if he pulls himself together, could be a decent bench guy (getting a little too old and a little to rusty to be a starter, I think...
3) This guy's a piece of crap, though. Flashes of brilliance with a LOT of baggage. Buyer beware, and congrats to the local sports-writers who'll have a new miscreant to pick on, now that Telfair's a non-entity...
maybe ainge is dangling the threat of $10 mill per season on the books of the trailblazers to angle for a future trade that will be in the celtics favour - oh i dont kow say 'if we dont sign miles and add $10mill to your cap space then we would like to trade scalabrine for channing frye'
what else can we extort from the blazers?
did danny leave the blazers as a player in unhappy terms?
ANOTHER injured player given a 'clean bill of health' by DAinge. Remember LaFrentz? Delk? I'm glad it's a non guaranteed contract. If DAinge wants to make it guaranteed, THEN we should really get worried.
The C's won't allow him to be a cancer. He HAS to play well or he's gone. Great signing.
I still want to see the first minutes off of the bench go to "big baby Davis, Leon Powe, Giddens and O'Bryant.
Jbird is mostly right-on. Miles was always known for offense, not defense. Plus he's not a good 3-ball shooter. I don't care about the Miles is a cancer argument because he's older now and the pecking order is more established in Boston, but to be realistic he's definitely not good at the things that Posey was so useful for in the playoffs. Not sure that this one will work out so well, but then again he comes cheap.
MILES IS A PERFECT MATCH FOR BOSTON TEA PARTIES...ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT...JUST ASK THE BRITTISH...SEET # 18...JUNE 09...
welcome to beantown...mr miles...
I'm a Blazers fan who's witnessed the Darius Miles you're going to get on and off the court. You'll have a 6'10" guy who has a low basketball IQ (perfect for Doc Rivers) with a suspect jump shot and who has always relied on his explosive athleticism for any success he's had. He's never been a player who's enjoyed the game enough to improve himself in the offseason as many players do. His time is spent drinking in the bars and making it rain in the strip clubs. During the time after his surgery when he should have been rehabbing, he would show up at the Blazer's practice facility with liquor coming out of his pores. Just an absolute malcontent who Danny Ainge is signing to hurt a fellow competitor. Smart business move but it's not going to help the Celtics at all. Good luck to Boston fans and good riddance to Darius Miles
I live in Portland and saw him play. Darius Miles used to have awesome skills. I saw that guy do some incredible things on the court. His attitude is questionable. He was overweight the last time I saw him. The Blazers talked for months about how to cut the guy because he just didn't fit in with the new approach. Will he accept the role of 7th or 8th guy on the Celts?

Boy, Boston must be desperate! Maybe Miles can help KG score more weed. Now that's team chemistry!
So far Ainge has proven to be smarter than the posters. He signed this guy for reasons and on information we are unaware of. Non guaranteed means he fits on and off the court or he goes. If he is serious about redemption he is in the perfect situation.
He's definitely a gamble, been nothing but a total loser throughout his career and even his rehab. But the champs have to gamble -- who's going to make it easy for them? So the non-guaranteed contract protects us as much as possible. AND I don't discount the factor of his Blazers contract. Danny is proving to be a brilliant executive, balancing so many considerations at once. He's not treating the Celtics as a One & Done. The tough choice on Posey was to keep us as a player in 2010. The Blazers are going to be FORCE in the next several years. Imagine if they add one of the signature free agents of the next two years? Whatever Danny can do to slow down their improvement is going to help us when we both meet in the FINALs in 2010 & onward...Sorry Blazers, I've been really happy to see you turn it around, & I hope you continue, you're a great franchise in a great city. But welcome to the big leagues, this is war and you are on the radar. Before you feel too sorry for yourselves, remember how the Celtics had to carry Reggie Lewis' contract after he died. The rest of the league voted against letting it come off the cap.
Does Danny Ainge have a degree in Social Work? With both Giddens and now Miles possible Celtics next season, seems like DA thinks Doc can handle whoever shows up in the locker room. Creating team chemistry will be the thing!
Actually I hope both Giddens and Miles can contribute!
Even if Miles has somehow made big improvements in his maturity, attitude and work ethic (not likely), every indication is that his knee is absolutely THRASHED. It would be a medical miracle if he were to play in the NBA again.
The Celts could have done better in finding other promising out of work players to invite to training camp.
I cant believe this scrub is replacing James Posey...Posey is a winner, Miles is a lazy loser that can jump thats about it
No worries, we're sending Tonya Harding with a crowbar to fix DMiles' knee for good. Karma is a female dog.
Great pick. There is no way he will prima donna on this team - especially since he is WAY down on the food chain, 5th? 6th?... KG, P-squared, and RA will whoop his arse out behind the barn if he tries. On the other hand, he could be a killer role player if he works out. I think he will make the team and sit out 10 beginning games...
