Kobe to Italy?

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff August 8, 2008 12:37 AM

BEIJING – If Italy comes knocking with big money next summer, the NBA could lose its biggest star in Kobe Bryant.

When asked by The Boston Globe about a report that LeBron James would strongly consider playing in Europe for $50 million for one season when he becomes a free agent in two years, Bryant said he would take a similar deal by a pro team in Italy if offered when he becomes a free agent next summer. Such would be a devestating loss for the NBA since the Los Angeles Lakers star was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player last season and considered its most popular player. The Associated Press originally reported that Bryant could have interest in playing professionally in Europe.

“I’d go. I’d probably go,” said Bryant, during a USA Basketball press conference on Friday morning. “Like Milan or something like that, where I grew up or something like that… Peace out.”

Bryant continued: “Do you know any reasonable person that would turn down 50 (million dollars)?”

Bryant spent a large part of his childhood growing up in Italy while his father, Joe, played professional basketball there and speaks fluent Italian. In 1999, the 10-time NBA All-Star also acquired a 50 percent ownership of the Olimpia Milano of the Italian Professional Basketball League.

“Because I grew up in Italy it has more significance to me because I’m more familiar with it, I’ve been there and I still have friends there,” said Bryant, a three-time NBA champion. “I’m thinking about buying a house out there. It would be nothing to me to be able to do that.”

ESPN.com reported that a person close to James said Tuesday that the Cavaliers' superstar would strongly consider playing overseas if he was offered a salary of "around $50 million a year." ESPN also reported that Russia CSKA Moscow and Greece Olympiacos have already contacted James, but nothing has been discussed monetarily. Considering the Euro versus the American dollar and that European teams have no salary cap, a contract paying $50 million American wouldn’t be out the realm of possibility.

  1. You take Kobe out of the league, who else is there better to love and/or hate. Kobe gone, LeBron gone, sorry, the league just isn't the same. It would struggle like it did when Jordan left.

  1. Wow. All I have to say is that it's time for the media to calm down. Lebron said that he would go to Europe IF someone offered him $50 million per season. There is no report that anyone from any team in Europe mentioned ANYTHING about the possibility of offereing Lebron James $50 million per season. It's the same as if someone was asked to do something outragious and they said "maybe for a million dollars." He was stating that it would take a lot of money to make him even consider leaving the country. The media blew this WAY out of proportion. Big shocker there.

  1. If James and Bryant leave for italy or europe or wherever they're thinking about going to. Not only will they disgrace the so called game they love and that they have dreamt about since in diapers and if Bryant says that italy would mean more to him then he should stayed there... but they would ruining and disgracing the game that Jordan, Dr. J, Magic, Chamberlain, Abdul Jabar, Havlicek, Maravich and so many other that it would take forever to list....that made the game and shaped it for them so they could make the league theirs and then they are going to even think about leaving for money..well then if thats their choice then let them and all those thins they said about playing the game because they love the game were lies and if they weren't you wouldn't need 50 million tax free or what ever from over seas no would you!!!!!

  1. Wow, losing James and Bryant to overseas would kill the NBA image. This would be devastating to the NBA. The game is rigged and the NBA wouldn't have their top two superstars anymore. Can you say Bye Bye David Stern. If all this truly unfolded.

  1. It would be horrible for his career. What type of challenge could he have playing in Italy? Then diminish his chances at being in the hall of fame? Dumb decision.

  1. mmm.

not sure I like this....not that I dig K*be or anything, but if he leaves, and our trailblazers win championships, some numbskull brain bucketless stodge will one day say, that they only won becuase they didn't play against the best.

or you could rationalize it by saying that k*be knew he didn't have a shot after the 08-09 trailblazers crushed the league, so he ran away like a little girl.

either way. it just don't seem right.

  1. It would be ironic and hilarious if Kobe went to Europe: for once, Europe, takes a free market approach while the US is paralyzed by union-imposed restrictions on hiring. Surprise! Less restrictions lead to a higher quality product.

  1. Kobe and LeBron overseas would cripple the NBA for years, its popularity would sink to where it was before Bird-Magic. Regardless of how much you may not like Kobe as a person you can't deny his skill or importance to the league

  1. i think its all hype..ita just a ploy by Kobe and Lebron to get there respective clubs to not short-change them when its time for there contract to come up

Posted by johnny ray August 8, 08 11:12 PM
  1. Wishful thinking for opposing NBA teams. Is anyone surprised Kobe would say that? If i were an upcoming NBA free agent, I would let the media know that I would be willing to play in Siberia for a cool 80 million per year. kobe is a business man and the NBA is a business. This article is nothing new or surprising...

  1. Kobe would fit right in over seas. Take a few of these other whiners with you. The NBA will no doubt survive.

Posted by Jim August 8, 08 11:30 PM
  1. Yeah right. Kobe wants to follow in the footsteps of MJ and win as many NBA titles as possible. He's not going anywhere.

  1. Kobe? Playing in Europe? Why not? If the price is right like he said. At least his critics in the US wouldn't bother him. Maybe. Why not ask Shaq to go to Europe too. That would spice things up. I'm sure "Cry Baby Shaq" would want that!

  1. NBA's most popular player? I think that comment is up for debate. One of it's most talented maybe. I might have to agree with that one but I certainly don't have to like him.

Posted by Cindy August 9, 08 07:20 PM
  1. I don't even know why we bother with this thing, man. Europe does have taxes don't forget that. Team pay the taxes for the players which mean that contracts are negotiated in net amounts. A team would have to pay 78 million dollars per season not 50 million. 50 million for hte player 28 millions for taxes. And that's only for one year. Since Euros are worth about a buck 50, the team would have to spend a little over 50 Euros for one season. Let's not forget that Josh Childress got the biggest contract in European history and and he is going to be making like 6 and 1/3 million per season. The team is going to spen 32 millon over 3 years (20 mil for the player, 12 mil for taxes). 32 million over 3 seasons is a lot less then 78 million dollar for one season. No way are Kobe and LeBron gonna take in that kind of money.

Posted by Chukaz August 9, 08 08:28 PM
  1. please go to europe. you cant win here in the US without Shaq or a better team. Maybe they allow rape over there.

Posted by bill August 9, 08 09:02 PM
  1. 50 million dollars for 1 year overseas...can I play for just 1 game? You would be an ass not to take the money. Are you kidding me! I'll come off the bench for say a million! This is what the USA has come to...we are selling our country off to everyone else...so why not the NBA? Ugly stuff! It's not about Kobe or Lebron...it's about us! Oh...we could sell the NBA too! Nasty!

Posted by Jerry Chamer August 9, 08 10:50 PM
  1. that would be the demise of the nba...

  1. I remember a time when playing in the NBA was the dream.... But when a group of people come to you and offer you 50 million dollars to play basketball, I dont give a damn where in the world you have to play, you go make that money. Besides if youre Kobe Bryant or Lebron James, its not like the world wont be able to find you, and see your exploits(God Bless Youtube!!!). As a professional athlete you are a business, man (SHOUTS OUT TO JAY Z!!). And as a business you have to protect your bottom line, and 50 million dollars is a bottom line any sane person can deal with, I think. If in fact that bucketfull of money is offered to any one of these dudes they would be foolish to say no. Anyone that thinks otherwise is ridiculous and might want to consider having their dome examined or just plain killing themselves(THAT IS A JOKE BY THE WAY, PLEASE DONT KILL YOURSELF, PLEASE?!)... Thats my word!!!

  1. It's all about the $$$. If LeBron or Kobe can get 50 million/year, why not. The NBA will expand to Europe soon enough anyway, so what's the big deal. Many years ago, an argument could be made that the NBA was the best league and all the Euro leagues were just also rans. But now that Euro players are coming over here in droves, I can't see where they aren't for the most part just as good as the majority of US born players. Sure, the superstar players here will always be the best, but you have to admit that you get excited when you see a guy like Dirk or Pau or even Yao make a great play. The only thing that burns my ass is when the champion of the NBA or MLB states that "we are the world champion." Says who? Certainly not the rest of the world. Check out the level of excellence in Japanese baseball or Argentine, Spanish or Greek basketball. For a true world champion, all of the leagues champions should play each other to determine the real winner. Its just my opinion but I think that national pride aside, I'm right. The Olympics sort of proves my point.

  1. IF KOBE AND LEBRON GO IT WILL HIT THEIR TEAM HARD BUT THINK ABOUT THE LAKER FRANCHISE TRYING TO BUILD AROUND KOBE GIVING HIM EVERYTHING HE NEEDS GASOL ODOM THAT WOULD BE A SLAP IN THE FACE TO HIS FRANCHISE BUT ON THE OTHER HAND 50 MILLION BUCKS ZOOM HE'S GOING TO GO IF HE IS ASKING FOR IT
LEBRON ON THE OTHER HAND WHAT ARE YOU THINKING YOU NO ONCE U OPT OUT YOU WANNA GO RIGHT TO JAY-Z AND BROOKLYN YOULL GET PLENTY OF MONEY THERE PLUS HE IS GOING TO BUIL YOU A DYNASTY STAY!!!!!

    Posted by PETER V August 22, 08 01:28 PM
  1. This would be a smart move financially on Bryant's and James part, IF the Euro teams did offer them $50 million a year. Who wouldn't do it. But, if you look at it in a view of reputation of being that NBA "star," then both theses players will get looked down upon as ditching their country, their league, team, etc. They wont be remembered as one of those greats as they would be if they stayed. I say go if your in trouble financially, but then what NBA player is?

Kobe .... Italy has changed a lot since you left it ..... man.
