Pierce handcuffed in Vegas

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff August 4, 2008 07:52 AM

Celtics captain Paul Pierce was reportedly handcuffed following a traffic stop on the Las Vegas strip early Sunday morning.

Here's the story from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

The Boston Celtics' Paul Pierce, the most valuable player in the 2008 NBA Finals, was handcuffed by Las Vegas police early Sunday after he was initially uncooperative following a traffic stop for driving erratically on the Strip.

Bill Cassell, public information officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, said he did not have the details about why Pierce was cuffed but said it often happens when "an individual is loudly hostile."

"You have to remember he's a big guy," Cassell said.

Pierce, a forward who is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds, "rapidly calmed down," and police removed the handcuffs after about 15 minutes, Cassell said.

"We find this happens a lot of times," Cassell said. "Someone is a little agitated, and when they're placed in handcuffs, they rethink things."

The traffic stop occurred around 3 a.m. near Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, Cassell said.

Officers gave Pierce field sobriety tests, which often take up to an hour, he said.

A Breathalyzer showed Pierce registered below the 0.08 level that defines legal intoxication in Nevada.

Pierce did not drive the car after he was stopped.

"He made a decision to have one of the valets park his car for the night," Cassell said.

Police did not cite Pierce for a traffic infraction.

"We don't cite everybody we stop," Cassell said. "Sometimes we give just a verbal warning. It's based on the totality of the circumstances."

Pierce, a frequent NBA all-star, led the Celtics to the NBA championship over the Los Angeles Lakers in June.

  1. Championship or no championship this punk has to go. He probably used the line "do you know who I am" Danny needs to get rid of him, FAST, while he's worth something.
Calling himself the best player in the NBA is laughable. He's a joke and for the Celtics to have him as captain is ludicrous.

  1. Oh well. Here we go again. Paul Pierce sliding back into his childish behavior mode. He is (despite what Charles Barkley might say) a powerful role model for his fans and especially the youth of this country. Speaking as someone who is NOT a multi-millionaire, I just don't understand why a guy like Pierce goes out and does stuff like this. If I were very wealthy and I wanted to do some serious drinking, I would have a driver for such an event. I guess that there isn't a correlation between money and common sense.

  1. This is like a sign.... time for P.P. to get back to work. Partying time is over. Get back to Boston before something really bad happens.

  1. That's not the way to represent your reputation, Pierce!
Definitely not the way to go, Champ:(
Relax and get over this celebration already - let's look towards the upcoming season ok.
Just a few years ago, was seriously stabbed and was very close to death; dont forget how greatful you were to God after you survived...use your head MVP, and try to avoid such scenarios - get a driver or something.

  1. he's lucky he wasn't tasered... considering how eager cops are to torture people these days.

When is Deaval going to do something about paying these crooks overtime for directing traffic

  1. you guys are beauties. here we go again? the guy was pulled over for possibly making an illegal lane change (no blinker) i am sure none of you god sends have done that before. he took THREE field sobriety test and passed all of them. though its nothing to be proud of i am sure we have all had to much to drink at one point and prob wouldnt have passed that test. get off your high horse

  1. PP handled this much better than many of his peers in the NBA and other sports. He didn't break the law, wasn't cited and had the good sense to have his car driven away by someone else. Where's the problem?!

Posted by JoeJoeWhite August 4, 08 11:50 AM
  1. Clearly cops did not think anything of it! Let him go without a charge and he was not intoxiated. This is no news but KG showed his colors!

    Posted by Jim51 August 4, 08 11:52 AM
  1. KG you need to rewrite what you said, Paul Pierce has more talent than most in the NBA. Clearly you have little sports education.

Posted by bostonfan August 4, 08 11:59 AM
  1. I hate to see this, but glad nothing really happened. I agree with this sounds very much like DWB. Who would not have gotten irrated if they were told "you have to undergo and sobriety test" when you've done nothing wrong. They probably cuffed Pierce so they could get their names in the paper.

Posted by Phil August 4, 08 12:02 PM
  1. Wait...he didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't drunk driving, and who isn't pissed off when being harassed by the cops? He wasn't even violent...

So to the first 4 posters here...please. Cut the "holier than thou" attitude, nobody wants to hear it.

Posted by smithdcd August 4, 08 12:06 PM
  1. Apparently there are still too many people in this country who have an irrational fear of large black men.

Posted by ATXGuy August 4, 08 12:09 PM
  1. This is simply another case of DWB (driving while black). Let's see, didn't something like this also happen in Wellesley...

Posted by Rick August 4, 08 12:12 PM
  1. What?!? Calling him a punk and saying he has to go? That's ridiculous! His blood alcohol level was BELOW 0.08! He was one of the few sober driver in Vegas last night. Paul is a good guy and anyone who jumps on his case has personal insecurity issues of their own. This is a non-story, other than a superstar athlete NOT being drunk in Vegas....

Posted by John August 4, 08 12:15 PM
  1. hdsnake I guess you missed the part where the article stated he tested less than the legal limit.

As for me, it sounds like a case of DWB, and they effectively cuffed him because they had nothing else and because he was big and black. If I was stopped for no reason and they tried to cuff me I'd open a can of whoopass on them and the hell with the consequences.

Posted by Dave August 4, 08 12:15 PM
  1. Hmmm not arrested, but placed in handcuffs because he is a big man. Should it have read a big black man. I am caucasian and I could read between the lines in this one. Perhaps he was driving erratically because he was black in a nice car at 3:00AM right on Las Vegas PD.

  1. Since everyone is ready to crucify the guy before we even hear from him why don't we just banish him from the NBA for life and fine him 500K fro being in Las Vegas at 3AM in the morning.................. Let's hear what really happened before jumping to conclusions - I guess in this worl you are tried in the papers and are always guilty before innocent - This is a non-story get on with life

  1. We all need a little course correction now and then. It is too bad about Paul's comments about being the best player and this LV thing. However, Paul is basically a good guy, and I think he is ready to settle down and start thinking about next season.

I have to think that one of the reasons he is acting up a bit is because he probably feels bad that he is not on the olympic team. I have LOTS of faith in Paul. He will be ready to go when training camp starts. I think having KG and Ray around will help him.

Posted by Robert August 4, 08 12:26 PM
  1. What's up with the negative comments.? He didn't do anything incrimanating (obviously) or else he would not have been released, the rest is up for speculation .... non-story

Posted by Mozo August 4, 08 12:36 PM
  1. Sad to say but suspect Pierce was a victim of profiling. Or, worse still, high profiling.

After the season he had, if anyone is entitled to go to Vegas and cut loose . . .

To complete the neutering/Disneyfication of Las Vegas, I'd suggest that all celebs, especially big time jocks, and most especially African American ones, simply avoid the place and find some off-shore resort where they can spend their $$$ and not have to worry about being molested by jealous and bigoted police.

BTW, Paul, Monte Carlo's nicer. WAY nicer :)

    Posted by Paul Q August 4, 08 12:39 PM
  1. I am not surprised considering how he clings to his mvp trophy and brings it every place he goes and now claims to be the best player in the nba or world. Anybody else think the upcoming season will be a wash or early first round exit? I know they are happy they won it all but these celtics are partying harder than the red sox did after 2004 I can understand celebrating but they seem to be taking it too far.

Posted by Trav August 4, 08 12:45 PM
  1. yall always jump to 1 side of a story? Trade PP? Youre nuts. Oh my, he was pulled over for a moving violation and was handcuffed for being a 6'7 black guy. Lets get rid of him. Kid grew up in inglewood, he's a product of his environment, but he's also one of the gutsiest and toughest players in the league who does alot of charity work. Guy was stabbed several times in the offseason and didnt miss one game. Guy bleeds green at this point, dealt with being on one the worst 5 teams in the league this past decade and still stuck around and never complained.

  1. This punk needs to go? If he wants to do some serious drinking he needs a driver? Are you kidding? He passed all the tests, was below the legal limit, and then made the decision to NOT continue driving. What did he do wrong again?

Posted by chris August 4, 08 12:50 PM
  1. Pierce obviously did nothing wrong. He was agitated after being stopped for probably no reason other than the racist attitudes of the cops. The sobriety tests were clean. He passed the breathalyzer! Paul Pierce is the Truth, and the man, and was having a good time in Las Vegas. Leave him alone.

Posted by Derek DiRocco August 4, 08 12:52 PM
  1. basically this is not a story and the tards saying pierce should be dealt obviously have no clue that schooling the two darlings of the media to win the C's 17th prooved he is the best player in the world. so let the man enjoy his celebration. he was not drunk and there is no issue except vegas police being afraid of a large black man.

  1. Really, Pigs? Who do you run to if your car is stolen?. If you get jumped or mugged, who helps you find the person?

Granted, I think they over reacted by putting PP in cuffs, but come on your all over reacting. They did not even state why he originally got pulled over, dwb maybe an unfortunate possiblity, but your all assuming the worst.

Calm down everyone, training camp starts in a couple months, and it will all be fine.

  1. Driving erratically or a black man driving a luxury car? It probably has happend to him enough to where he's a little fed up. We don't know the details so let's give him the benefit of the doubt until we know the whole story.

  1. Paul Pierce IS the CELTICS! Without him there isn't a parade in Boston to celebrate an NBA Championship.

"If I were very wealthy and I wanted to do some serious drinking, I would have a driver for such an event. I guess that there isn't a correlation between money and common sense."

So since you don't have the money Pierce has it's ok for you to do it? Also if you read the article it states that Pierce was below the legal level. Therefore, he is fully within his rights to opperate a vehicle.

Was it the smartest thing no it wasn't; however, it's dumb for anyone not just Pierce b/c he's a star athelete. How many people get pulled on the strip a day??? I'm guessing a bunch; however, celeb status gets your name in the paper.

I only care what Pierce does between October and June.

  1. Hey Kobe lover,

at least Pierce didn't have to pay someone off for sexual well, you know.

And Kobe is a no heart, no show when he realizes he can't win. He's a quitter. It is why the Celtics dominates the Lakers whenever they meet. It takes heart to be a champion. Now you can learn the same lesson from Manny if you watch the Dodgers as he doesn't have true heart either.

And that my friend, is "the truth"

  1. Wow, stopped for driving "erratically"...whatever the f*** that means. Then he was cuffed, field sobriety tested (AND his Blood Alcohol Content measured under .08) and not even a ticket was written up. If those police officers had ANYTHING to ticket him for (that would have stuck in court) they would have. Way to protect and serve and keep criminals off the street LVPD.

  1. Paul Pierce did nothing against the law -- or they would have nailed him. My advice to Paul, is to stay out of Vegas. Any city that has a mayor that uses the slogan, "what goes on here, stays here", is the kind of town to stay the heck away from. (None other than O.J. quoted the Vegas mayor, after his latest arrest.)

Everyone makes such a big deal out of what athletes do, but seriously...in the end, they're freaks who can throw a ball through a hoop, or hit baseball really far, or biirdie a hole, or throw a football with great accuracy. We shouldn't be looking to these people as a model of how to live properly. I seriously couldn't care less...even if he had done something to warrent what happened. This stuff is so goofy!

  1. PAUL PIERCE NEEDS TO GET A LAWYER AND SUE. This was clearly DWB. They say he didn't fail a drunk test. That implies he was drinking and they are intent on tarnishing his reputation. They said he was put in handcuffs. Guess what, if i were asked to take a drunk test while sober, i would be annoyed too. He was lucky he was not tasered, or simply shot to death. How might this stop had gone for someone else similarly profiled and less wealthy and famous. He has the resources, and a responsibility to the rest of society to fight back in the courts when his civil rights are violated, which clearly they were.

  1. Look, guys, this is progress! Paul is a 6 foot 7 black man in the United States of America. Just a few years ago he would have been shot or lynched. Today, he was only hand-cuffed. We've come a long way, Baby!

In another 25 years or so, he may be allowed to stay in his car, get a warning and drive off unharmed. Hope springs eternal and all that.

Posted by Al Ferg August 4, 08 03:00 PM
  1. Total non-story. It was a traffic stop, he passed the tests. I think this happened just so Bob Ryan would have something to write about this summer. He needs to write a "Come Home And Focus On Winning #2, Paul" column, and the police finally gave him his angle.

  1. What's wrong with all you guys? Is it really that childish to have a couple drinks in Vegas, blow sober and get mad for being pulled over? I'm certainly not 6'7" 235 lbs, but I'm still a big guy and when I get mad I seem a lot more intimidating than I mean. Cut the guy a break, he just won you all an NBA title. If this had happened to Yao Ming or Steve Nash, I also have a feeling the cop would have reacted differently.

  1. iam a white guy and I absolutely believe that PP was pulled over for DWB, these Barney Fife police are looking to make a DWI arrest because 75% of the drivers there are intoxicated at that time of the night and it is an easy escuse to pull over a black man to make an arrest. If i had to take 3 sobriety tests after being pulled over on some BS reason like he was i would be loudly proclaiming my view as well. as is my right, especially since he was under the legal limit. Like i said i am a white man and i have been in similar circumstances and had profane language used on me by police and had them try to goad me into physical confrontations. i just "rapidly calmed down" and told the police they know where i live and that they are free to come there anytime they please and talk to me when they are off work. of course i ask for there name and badge number and try to make a harassment complaint and am turned away at the station. as a college edcucated 42 year old White professional i want to tell you all that the harassment and abuse that you hear the black community complain about the police is very much true.

  1. Pierce needs to stop with the partying. For those who think he was DWB, give me a break. I live in Vegas, the police want people to have a good time, but they have no tolerance for drunk driving. Why would they cuff a millionaire who can afford good lawyers if they didn't have a reason? Pierce is the most immature star of the Celtics Big 3, he needs to leave Vegas and find a better way to spend the offseason. He's reminding me of Rothlisberger, who partied in Vegas for way too long after winning the Super Bowl, hanging out with fellow miscreant Joey Porter, the guy who got in a fist-fight at a blackjack table in Vegas (Hey Joey, you know they have cameras covering every angle of the casino, right? Not the best place to get in a fight) Pierce, go home and spend some time with your family.

  1. I think we all can admit to crossing the yellow line once and a while, but when you are pulling out of a club in Vegas and you do that (whether you are white, yellow, or green) exect to be pulled over by the police. I do not think this is a race modivated event...but maybe more to do with wanted to pull over and "get" the big star. I suspect the police would have done the same if Paris Hilton was behind the wheel.

However, the cuffs seem to me a little much. The police claim he was "loudly hostile." Not sure what that means exactly, but it does not seem like the police were in any harm. As a result, the cuffs seem a little excessive.

Happy PP followed instructions and was within the legal limits. As a aside, we should not raise our kids to look up to these athletes, but rather to appreciate the "team" that each great athlete is a member. Boston has some great teams these days!

  1. Paul Pierce was in the wrong by being hostile to the MPD. Those officers are in a 24 hour party town with a big variety of different scenarios. What I saw was real professionalism in the way that they responded to situations, when I worked Security in Las Vegas. They are doing their job.

  1. I am white. Have been pulled over late a night and on empty roads while doing something not the rule of the road. Some of the police are jerks, others are reasonable. I was on the cape in Mass. Stopped with my wife to be in the car for some minor infraction. My wallet was in the back. When I got out to retrieve it from the hatchback my wife got out on the passenger side. The cop pulled a gun on us and told her to get back in the car and held the gun on me while I got my license. Some times they get scared for no reason.

  1. for any morons who want to start ripping on pierce, read the article with your blinders OFF. the cop said he calmed down, there was no arrest, and it doesnt even seem to be an issue. remember james posey last summer? he was cocked and nobody said anything. kobe- rapist... pierce- spoiled brat who calmed down...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....oh, and if anyone wants to question his game, just rewind the season. it is almost like you stupid laker fans forgot who won.

  1. Pierce is lucky that he wasn't holding a cell phone, he would have been shot. The cop said that he was "a little agitated" at first and then calmed down. It sounds to me like the cop saw a 6'7" large black man and was afraid. Pierce didn't do anything wrong. Anyone that wants him gone for something like this has never been outside of their house.

  1. Number 72, that is an interesting story. Sorry you had a gun pointed at you.

Now, as far as the story about Pierce?
    1. Don't believe everything you read in the newspaper. Even though there were only maybe 5 facts told in the whole story, 2 or 3 might be innacurate!

    2. Riddle me this readers...what if Pierce was actually drunk, was driving like sheet, and was beligerant to the cops....and then the cops realized he was Paul Pierce, NBA Finals MVP? They might have had celebrity envy, and let him off the hook.

    3. I'm not saying my story above is true....who knows; but isn't it just as believable as post number 72? You just don't know in this world.

I think we should all listen to what he had to say. Pierce has been a great player for the Celts through thick and thin. He deserves or support and respect.

  1. nothing happened.he was probably swurving and they pulled him over cause he's black and he drives a nice car.and they dont even tell us a reason why they handcuffed him and they didn't cite him.

  1. Is KG the "real" KG ? After all, KG is why we won a title and THAT is the truth.

  1. E.V.

when my car was stolen, I stopped a cop on the street to tell him. He said he could not do oit because he was on another call (to dunkin donuts maybe). The cops showed a half an hour later and then decided to drive around the block. WTF.

On another instance my car was broken into. There was a deli next to my building where cops go to get their breakfast. I went in an asked one of them is he could take a report after he was done eating. He told me he could not. He also told me to call the precint to have them send someone to take the report. So I had to wait 45 minutes until another copper decided to show up. WTF again.

Cops are just a cleanup crew, they don't prevent anything or are willing to help the citizens that pay their salaries. copes have the attitude of thinkine their are better than the rest of the population and you can not even question their actions without them throwing a " I will arrest you for disorderly conduct or resisting arrest".

  1. the scenario prob went like this...peirce leaves the club in the early morning in his $100k+ exotic whip, starts swervin or accelerating just for kicks, and a cop sees him. If you won a ring, was in vegas partying, out at 3am in your sick car, you are a target, white or black. this is what cops LIVE for!

  1. When does the NBA release this seasons schedule??

  1. KG - 'This punk has to go'

What are you basing this on? He was Finals MVP a month ago and you think Boston will trade him?

Why is he a 'punk'? B/c he got pulled over and hand cuffed? No one knows what happened so keep your stupid comments to yourself.

Of course Pierce thinks he's the best in the NBA. He just went head to toe with Lebron & Kobe and out played them both. You need an ego to be a great athlete.

  1. I never really thought much of PP either way before this year's finals; I knew he was a good player who survived being stabbed a gazzillion times. But he displayed such bad sportsmanship during the finals ... tugging his jersey and yelling like a punk every time they did anything! They were a good team but not great and PP acted like a punk and looked like a fool too. there is still something to be said for playing it cool and letting your play speak for itself a la MJ, Dr. J and even Shaq! Best player HA HA HA!! what a joke ... how's that knee pp? Where were your teammates to carry you away in Vegas? You suck pp. Go Warriors Monta is the future!

  1. To "KG" - paul pierce was the finals MVP, and is arguably the best scorer to ever play for the celtics. you are retarded go back to minnesota

  1. This situation sucks! I am a LONG time avid C's fan. Myself and many others like me have been dragged through the dirt and always held PP to a higher standard. We must all remember.. if this happened 2 or 3 years ago nobody would have known.
As far as the "KG" comments go, he/she must not be familiar with PP as a collegiate & pro basketball player. He has always been far above average and finally had the team to help him prove it .
Nevertheless, I think that all C's fans hold a team captain, NBA champion, Finals MVP, and a new father to a higher standard. PP should realize he will now have 10 X the scrutiny everywhere he goes. LIVE UP TO THE TITLE PP.SET AN EXAMPLE !

  1. Paul is one if not the best player ever to play for the Celtics (no Offense BR). We all know that. Ok now that that is said. Paul everyone makes mistakes, just learn from them. You have the opportunity that I would kill for and that would be to play for the Celtics and to go down as the best player in the NBA to put on that Celtics Jersey. Your #1 fan in New Mexico.

  1. Who cares about Bynum. He took a dive against the Celtics last season and still isn't cleared to play BB after just a minor injury. He's a wimp like the rest of the Laker quiters.

  1. So he changed lanes without signalling, what's the big deal? He wasn't even drunk. A bunch of bored cops got a kick out of cuffing a Finals MVP.

Later at the station: "Hey guys, guess who we just pulled over? Give you a hint, he was big, black, and wears a green jersey..." "Yeeeeaaa, did ya cuff em up and slam him gainst the squad car?" "Oh ya, you betchya." "That-a-boy, good job officer."

    Pigs...

  1. Life is humbling. That's why it's important to stay grounded because the same people who hail you, will nail you. Humility is key or as the old saying goes "fall on the rock before it falls on you." Thank you Mr. Pierce for your intestinal fortitude during the championship run. Fall on the rock and allow Him to be glorified, your life ain't you. You're on earth to inspire folks higher.
