Miles suspended 10 games

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff September 19, 2008 04:59 PM

The NBA made official today what was already expected to be a setback in Darius Miles' return to the NBA: Should Miles be healthy enough to play, the league will suspend him for the first 10 games of the season.

The press release from the league:

"The NBA announced today that Darius Miles of the Boston Celtics has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program at the end of the 2007-08 NBA season. His violation of the program involved phentermine. Miles' suspension will begin with the first game of the 2008-09 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play."

The number "10" is also notable for Miles in another way. If Miles plays more than 10 games this season for the Celtics, or any other NBA team, his $9.3 million annual salary will be picked up by the Portland Trail Blazers, fulfilling the terms of the NBA's career-ending injury policy.

An interesting twist: After his 10-game suspension, the 11th game Miles could potentially play is against Portland on Dec. 5 (game No. 21 for Celtics).

  1. why is it that boston puts together a great team that still even being older can possibly dominate the NBA and add a cancer like miles? here is a punk that is full of problems, and not healthy enouph to really help boston. is it becouse the celtics have a problem with portland? all miles is going to do is sit on the bench and play mop up after boston is up by a ton. oh, in the meantime he will be a cancer in the locker room and actually hurt boston's chances of success.
is it really worth it to take on a player as wrong for boston as miles only for the benefit of hurting a team like portland who got rid of cancer like that? that is to bad and sad. lets look around the league for another player that can really help boston and that HAS BEEN PLAYING.

  1. I think they look at a guy who's 26 and who has been through a lot of adversity recently. Of course you can write him off as a guy who will never change...or, you can take a chance and hope he really has value and could potentially help.

It's pretty obvious what Danny's doing. Seems to me he's more than earned the credibility to take a chance like this. And what's the downside? He is signed to a non-guaranteed minimum contract, and Portland has to pay him his big salary if he plays. Seems like all reward, no risk to me.

Miles wouldn't be the first guy to have attitude problems, but then come to mature. He's also never been on a veteran, winning team, and KG is a role model for him.

But sure, go ahead and look around the league and see who can help more. Always funny when people say this like there's some obvious player who's totally available and better than Darius. I'm sure Ainge would just zoom right past a guy like that to go for a riskier player who wasn't as good....

  1. You're absolutely right. Danny Ainge has proved he knows absolutely nothing about evaluating talent.

  1. Nathan

You were never an idiot when you were young? People don't deserve another chance to redeem themselves? Why don't you go rot away in that little mind of yours. Take a look at the Patriots who have brought in supposed bad apples or cancers as you like to call them and then comment on what those bad apples did for that team (i.e. Dillon, Moss). You are truly a part of the fellowship of the miserable and I'm sure your life is an example of your attitude. Go Celtics!

  1. Nathan.....please pay attention! D.Miles I think we can agree on is a great talent but is a young person so far incapeable of handling sucess.
    (1) Ainge got him for peanuts---non guaranteed contract****FOR CHEAP
    (2) This is the best locker room in the league. If he does not fit in, he will be cut
    (3) He's going to have to play defence to get in the game.....changing his mind!!!!
    (4) He's the best bench player we have & I live big baby, Powe and T. Allen
    (5) By the end of the season the DEFENCE will be better than last year.
    (6) He picked us and he was offered more money be another team
    (7) CHILL MAN

  1. Wow Nathan, aren't you glad you posted? P-Double, Big Ticket and Sugar Ray will not put up with any crap from D-Miles. C's mgmt is smart. Even if D-Miles comes back strong, the Blazers will pay his salary. Ainge, Wyc and C's fans really have nothing to lose.

  1. It seems like it would make more sense to suspend Miles for 10 games after he has played the first one. Otherwise it just seems like more rehab time before he starts to play. Who decides if he is ready to play at the beginning of the season?

Do you think Ainge has a grudge against Portland for the trade that landed them Telfair in exchange for B. Roy?

  1. Yeah, good luck with all that. Some people just don;t have the drive to capitalize on their talents. He wont sustain his effort for more than a month or two
Still, its cruel that Ainge wants to stick it to Portland and make them eat the salary for a total bust. As if he never hoped to get out of a disasterous contract before.

  1. Some of you guys simply don't understand the BUSINESS of basketball. You don't think that once Miles has played his 9th game, that Portland won't "owe" us a favor for potentially cutting him to save over 9 million dollars? Sound like a free draft pick coming our way unless Miles proves to be worth the 9 million to us.

  1. People can change with the right environment.

    Example: Randy Moss!

  1. I said that about Moss too. But after seeing him without Brady this year. I'm pretty convinced he's going to change his demeanor.
With that said, the Miles thing has no risk, so who really cares.

  1. Sorry, but this guy isn't playing in the NBA ever again. Two independent doctors evaluated his knee and determined that it won't stand up to the rigors of an NBA season. It takes something really special to come back from microfracture surgery, especially one as severe as Miles.' And though he has talent, he has never been known for being a hard worker.

I wish he would prove me wrong, but right now this looks like a petulant, vengeful move to punish Portland. Not very classy, Danny...

  1. I don't know if Ainge has some ulterior motive for signing Miles, but I seriously doubt it. From what I have observed this off season it seems apparent to me that any number of teams were willing to sign Miles if he was willing to sign a minimum non guaranteed contract. So I just don't see this as a classless move on Ainge's part. That said I also doubt Miles will hold up for the season. We'll see.

  1. It really is a damn shame about DMiles....A Mcdonalds All-American at one time with the world in his hands....I would love to see him thrive in Boston but if its meant to be ....its meant to be

  1. Doctors have been proven wrong numerous times. I for one am an example of that. I was told that I would never run again, let alone be able to compete. Now I'm training again and better than I was before the surgery on my hip. So, even if 50 doctors told him that he couldn't play, its not really true until the athlete proves that it is by failing.

  1. The Cs got him for short money. If he can help the Cs will keep him.
If he can't help them they will cut him loose. The Cs have a chance to
grab a potential contributor for little cost. No downside I wouldn't think.
