Ring it in

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff October 28, 2008 07:44 PM

John Havlicek carried the 2007-2008 Larry O'Brien trophy to center court, where he handed it off to a teary Paul Pierce to thunderous applause from the crowd. Havlicek was joined by Bob Cousy, Jo Jo White, and several other Celtics legends.

NBA commissioner David Stern then praised the team concept and unselfish play of the Celtics before the ring ceremony began.

The Celtics front office staff, who received their rings earlier today, were then introduced to the crowd. Danny Ainge received a loud ovation, but the loudest by far was reserved for Doc Rivers. Assistant coach Tom Thibodeau also got a nice hand.

The players then received their rings. In order: Leon Powe, Glen Davis, Gabe Pruitt, Sam Cassell, Tony Allen, Brian Scalabrine, Eddie House, Scot Pollard, Kendrick Perkins, Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Pierce walked out to claim their hardware. The crowd chanted "M-V-P" for Pierce.

Then, as a team, Celtics players hoisted the banner to the rafters. Can't recall seeing more flashbulbs in my life. You could feel the emotion in the building. Colleague Tony Massarotti just remarked, "How are they supposed to play a game after this?"

I have no idea.

  1. wow the sound quality was TERRIBLE on TNT. Both them and TBS have a knack for screwing it up on the biggest moments, i.e. the Red Sox in the playoffs this year too.
