Rondo's option picked up

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff October 31, 2008 12:46 PM

The Celtics announced this afternoon that they have picked up the fourth-year option for next season on point guard Rajon Rondo. The option is worth $2.09 million.

Rondo averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.68 steals last season, his second in the NBA and first as a starter. The former University of Kentucky standout averaged 10.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.73 steals during the Celtics' run to their 17th NBA title last postseason.

Rondo, 22, was selected 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2006 NBA Draft. He was dealt that night to the Celtics, along with forward Brian Grant and cash considerations, for the rights to the Cleveland Cavaliers' first-round pick in the 2007 draft.

  1. Pick it up?? Hell, extend it......this kid is the part of the present AND future of the club.....if it is just an option, my guess is they are getting a bargain right now.

  1. IMO the Celtics are overrating Rondo because of the sucess that they had in the playoffs dispite Rondos bad play. IMO they should deal him for a vertern PG like Brevin Knight or Anthony Carter.

  1. A no brainer... Rondo is awesome! I think one of the 5 best point guard in the league, and just wait, he is only getting better!

  1. Good move. Between Marcus Banks, Sebastian Telfair and many others, it is satisfying to know the C's finally have a great point guard. Rondo is quick, has great hands and great heart. I think everyone would love to see his jumpshot and defense get a little better, but this guy is a great player. I look forward to seeing many opposing players getting Rondo'ed this year!

  1. Another smart move by Danny Ainge. Isn't it amazing how in Boston local sports management can go from zeroes to heroes in no time? Boston got RONDO'ED!

  1. It will be a smart move by Danny Ainge only if -- after this season and if Rondo continues to develop -- Danny tears up the contract and signs Rondo to a long-term deal which is a little richer -- say 5 years for $18-20 Million.
