Helen Heinsohn passes away
Before the Celtics broke practice at HealthPoint today, coach Doc Rivers gathered the team at midcourt and offered a tribute to Helen J. (Weiss) Heinsohn, the wife of Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn, who died yesterday in Newton after a six-year battle with cancer.
“She’s just a courageous lady and will be sincerely missed,” Rivers said.
Helen Heinsohn's funeral is tomorrow at 11 a.m. at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home in Needham, while the funeral mass will be held at nearby St. Bartholomew’s Church in Needham at noon. Friends and family are invited, but can also visit this evening from 4 to 8 p.m.
Heinsohn will take a break from his normal duties with Comcast SportsNet, taking the next two games off while Donny Marshall steps in on color commentary.
This story about the Heinsohns' loving relationship and Helen's fight with cancer appeared the Boston Globe Magazine in January, 2001.

Tommy-
I only covered 2 Celtic's games last year for my station but I will always remember how nice your wife treated me in the dining room. She did not know me from Adam but walked up to me and just started talking. One of the nicest persons I have ever met. That one night meeting her will stay with me for a long long time.
My prayers are with you and your family.

Be Blessed
Sorry for your lose Tommy. You and Helen both deserve a Tommy Point for your courage.
My thoughts and prayers for the Heinsohn family. Rest In Peace to the Redhead from Needham.
Very sad news. I've been a Celtics fan for 40 years, and Heinsohn has been an integral part of most of that--whether as a coach or broadcaster (I don't recall his playing days, being too young).
My sympathies to Mr. Heinsohn.
How many years was this happy couple married?
I lost my dad just before the 07-08 season. He was only 54. I wish he could have seen them win again. I bet the red head and Tommy loved to see them win again.
Poor Tommy, I have been watching him since I was a kid. He's like a grandfather to many of us.
My dad always wished to see Randy Moss play for the Pats and I always wanted to see K.G. play for the green. It seems the last year or so has been very bitter sweet for many of us.
Tommy, take comfort in the fact that she is safe in God's memory and soon death will be no more. Rev. 21:4,5
Every game for as long as I can remember, Tommy mentioned the "redhead from needham" - that kind of love never dies. Helen is now at rest, with DJ and Red looking after her.
My heart goes out to you Tommy. I was a kid when you won Rookie of the Year. My brother and I use to listen to your games on the radio. You were the first to raise your arm in victory whenever you tapped in a ball in traffic under the boards. Later on, my mother joined us because she liked to watch you coach the Celtics because she love to see your facial expressions, especially when there was a bad call against us -- the Celtics.. She loved your passion, even if she didn't really care about basketball.
During the past decade, I somehow got a warm and pleasurable feeling when you would mention "the Redhead from Needham".
.
The Redhead In Needham will be missed, may she rest in peace.
We love ya Tommy
I feel for Tommy, I can't even imagine the pain he is going through. My prayers are with you Tom.
Tom Heinsohn is a Boston legend and his wife should always be remember as a brave woman who confronted her disease with class and diginity. The city of Boston mourns with the Heinsohn family.
When in college, I had the opportunity to intern at FOX25, which at that point was owned by the Celtics...I went to the 1993 draft party at the Boston Garden, and was lucky to have met Tommy & his wife - what a sweetheart! Here I am, a 20 year old nobody walking around amongst media & Celtics royalty, and the next thing you know, I'm talking with the Redhead from Needham. And you know what? We talked throughout the entire night; she spoke with me like I had known her for years...I can see why she & Tommy have been together for so long - they come from the same cloth - salt of the earth. God bless, Tommy.
celtic family with you tommy...you are in all our prayers
Tommy sorry to you and your family. The redhead in needham will always watch over you and the celtics.
As a kid, I got your autograph at your front door in Worcester 50 years ago, Tommy. You are the greatest, and the partnership with Gorman has been excellent for us New England basketball lovers. Deepest sympathy on the loss of your wife.
I am saddened for your loss. May your memories sustain you.
i'm sorry for your loss"BIG T".
mr t. heinson &family may the peace of God guard your minds and the comfort of the holy spirit be with you ! during these times of great memories of a loving wife and a wonderful mother .
Dear Tommy,
We had the privilege of sharing a dinner with you and Helen a year ago in Quincy at a friend's home. Helen was a the picture of courage, hope and grace. She shared her Scapluas and faith with all of us. We loved her immediately. Helen certainly left her footsteps on our hearts. Sincere Sympathy, Sally and Jack
