Richardson stirs the pot

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff November 18, 2008 10:58 PM

Knicks guard Quentin Richardson made some incendiary comments toward the Celtics after the game:

"I think a few of those guys know they can’t just say anything to us," said Richardson. "I’m just real curious to see what those guys will be saying if we weren’t in a basketball league, and didn’t have referees. I mean it wouldn’t be the same story. I mean they are the world champions and rah-rah-rah, but the tough part I don’t factor. I come from a neighborhood where you can say what you want to say, but 'til you do something, it don’t mean nothing. Some of those guys are happy to get a ring, but you ain’t been in the league long enough to talk to people like that. I don’t have a lot of respect for that. Like I said, I’d be curious to hear what they have to say in a different setting, I’d be very curious to see that.”

  1. So tuff guy thinks he can whup the Celtics on the street where there's no rules? OK. So what? Maybe that where he needs to go. Head to the streets and leave the NBA to the professionals. Rah-rah-rah? They are the World Champs cause they can play basketball. This ain't about whose tougher than who. What's the record? 15 of last 18 head to head matchups were Celtic wins. Yeah. That gains a lot of respect for you in the Celtics locker room.

  1. IT MUST BE NICE TO BE AN IDIOT. RICHARDSON PROBABLY WOULD BE
DEAD IF HE WASN'T PLAYING BASKETBALL. HE IS A THUG.

  1. q-rich should just be happy he is getting a paycheck and is in the NBA..he is not that good.

  1. Richardson is a perfect example of a STRAIGHT THUG that had enough athletic talent as a kid to get away with being a punk. As an NBA player, he is a total bust and as his body gets fatter, his talent grows smaller, and his mouth gets bigger. Who the hell is he talking about? Paul Pierce (from Inglewood), Leon Powe (from Oakland), Kendrick Perkins (from a poor town in Texas) - all three of those guys would eat his lunch on the street, just like they do on the court.

  1. And we all know that Quentin Richardson is an expert on accomplishment, letting his actions speak louder than words, etc. What a joke.

Posted by jd November 19, 08 12:12 AM
  1. ...and this is why that overweight, non-factor is rotting away on the Knicks. Yes, Quentin, maybe some of the Celtics wouldn't "beat you up" in a street fight in Ruckers. What a f'n joke.

  1. Hey Richardson, did you ever realize you might be a loser because you are all talk and no action. You sound like one of those phony tough guys who make sure his teammates are holding him before he starts screaming, "I'll get you!" Somehow, I don't think Kendrick Perkins is shaking in his basketball shoes at your lame crybaby comments. LOSER!!!!

  1. Translation: "I'm a thug. And I can't win at basketball. Look who I play for. I play for the NY Knicks. Plus, I'm a thug, and you see how thugs generally go in the NBA (Isiah Rider, Anthony Mason, etc....). So I can't win. But if we played on the streets, I'd bust 'em with my glock or have my homies take care of 'em!!"

And Pierce gets fined for "gang-related" sign. This guy basically says that he comes from a neighborhood where if you don't commit violence, no one takes you seriously, and if we played this game elsewhere, he'd commit violence against other members of the Celtics.

What should the fine be, Mr. Stern? A few million? A year's suspension? Oh, wait. Nothing! Great job as the Commish!

  1. Quentin Richardson is a crybaby. How about this? How about winning a championship, be an all-star, make the hall of fame, help myriads of children in your neighborhood...do something constructive Mr. Richardson. I don't even think Richardson was born the last time the Knicks won the championship. I can assure you of this....you are a blip on the memory chip of life. Try letting your frustration come from a dissatisfaction of not helping enough people today instead of complaining about a team that you will never be on and never emulate. Larry Bird used to trash talk all the time...think he grew up in the "hood?" Grow up

  1. Wha? The Celtics go out and take a league sponsored beating every time they get on the court and we have to listen to this guy? The Celtics players should get an award for putting up with the hard fouls and Laimbeer-like physical play without saying a word or any retaliation. That's tough in my book.

I want more trash talk in sports, but this is borderline gibberish coming from a second rate player on a deplorable team.

  1. Who is Quentin Richardson again?

Posted by steven November 19, 08 10:00 AM
  1. Quentin Richardson is probably as guilty as those he has accused of incendiary remarks, or trash talk, or whatever you want to call it.

My problem is this: there is WAY too much of that crap going on in basketball (and football, to an extent, as well). The Celtics are probably as guilty as any team. Maybe moreso, now that they're the World Champs. Being the best in the league gives you license, I guess, to talk smack...however, I don't like it. It's punkish. Thuggish.

The best smack talk is beating the brains out of your opposition on the court, in the FINAL SCORE category. That says volumes more than all the garbage, nonsensical street talk these guys direct at each other.

Just shut up and play basketball, ok guys? You are the Champs. You should be ABOVE that stuff.

  1. Are you kidding me Richardson?

Of course, they can say anything they want to you and your pathetic team.

The Knicks have been the joke of the NBA for years and you and that other punk Randolph(underachiever)....

Until you go out and win a championship....shut the $%$%$ up!

  1. I can kind of see his point.
KG always tries to come off as the tough guy intimidator, and the only reason that this works is because players on other teams buy into it, when in fact he's not going to do anything seriously physical as it will be a big fine, suspension, etc.

That's not to say that Richardson is justified in everything he says, just that players should not be getting intimidated by the Celtics 'physical' style of play.

Posted by TJ November 19, 08 10:57 AM
  1. I don't know why this guy still is talking. It's ridiculous...and i'm partially a Knicks fan

  1. The very best response is to continue to beat the Knicks. They don't much like defense or physical play, so I'm not sure what Richardson's sqwalking about. Randolph also seems to be more mouth than game. Think about this: Scal outplayed them both in stretches!

  1. Here's a guy that when he was at DePaul, people thought he was going to be a huge star. He hasn't lived up to that, and he's been on 2 terrible teams for the most of his career. He is a by-product of negativity. Alot of us come from "tough neighborhoods." That doesn't mean we have to be violent. Too bad someone with so much talent could never fully evolve as a player due to his negative attitude.

  1. I knew Quentin's brother - Lee. He was killed a couple years ago in a random shooting that also wounded their father, which took place in the neighborhood Q references in Chicago - in their childhood front yard, in fact. To think he hasn't learned a damned thing or feels no need to help quell the phony-mach-bullsh** that took his brother's life is beyond me, but hopefully no one stoops to his level and lets him keep this circle going.

  1. Ummm....Powe, if that is who he is crying about, didn't exactly grow up in Needham and go to school at Phillips Exeter Academy. You'd figure he would have learned something about Powe during the finals last year, when Richardson was at home, watching it on TV, wondering about if the Knicks were going to draft yet another guard in the lottery. ABC did a nice piece on Powe, I'm shocked that Richardson missed it.

  1. It seemed like the trash talking last night was completely even on both sides. Why do you think Q and Zach would get so "street" with their comments? It is odd to see players talk about talking on the court to the press - especially when they have a new coach trying to change the dynamic of the team. In fact, D'Antoni was amazing at being positive about the loss - yet the players focused on the trash talking? Also, Q didn't mention that he and Pierce were ejected on MLK Day last year - so the trash has been going on for a while - not just this year like he referenced. Was there something particular about the trash talking that was said? To me it just seems like two teams who hate each other - which is absolutely fine and good for the NBA.

Posted by Jon November 19, 08 01:44 PM
  1. To begin with, Richardson and Pierce have a history. Last year, on MLK Jr. Day, they were both ejected in a game at MSG for trash-talking and other extra-curricular stuff on the court. Add to the equation the fact that Nate Robinson - while talented - is a very chippy player who also talks too much. Throw in Kendrick Perkins' proclivity to pick up T's and swing elbows ... the "smack talk" should come as no surprise.

Let's also remember: Larry Bird was one of the biggest trash-talkers ever, but he backed it up.

The C's won the title last year by beating all comers (you win 2 road games in Detroit in a playoff series, I think that shows what you're made of). The Knicks have not been a factor in the Eastern Conference playoffs since LJ made that 4-point shot in 1999.

Q can talk all he wants (would he have said the same things if KG had played in that game?), but he's got ZERO credibility.

  1. I am not sure what language Mr. Richardson is speaking. Sadly for the Knick's organization, they had him represent them in post-game media coverage. His point kind of got lost in his eloquence-of-speech, I suppose. I DID get (understand) something like, "Me Tarzan, You Jane", however. Point taken.

But seriously, congrats to Q on working hard to preserve that which Isaiah built. His out-of-shape physique, lack of defense, or much of anything else for that matter is a strong testament to money well spent.

  1. I forgot Quentin Richardson was still in the NBA...well kind of with the Knicks. This thug mentality is something the NBA, and the NFL, really need to stop. You're not out on the streets Q, you're a multi-millionaire playing in the NBA. You want to show how street you are? Give up your spot on the Knicks so you can run with your crew. I'm sure there are a number of players who would be happy to take your spot and would work hard and behave. I'm sure that thug life is just as much fun as life as an NBA player. Grow up you waste of space.

  1. HAHAHA everyone in the league knows that the Celtics players are soft. How many times are we going to see Kevin Garnot run away from a fight on the court? Remember Anthony Peeler? How many times did Pierce get stabbed IN HIS OWN CITY? Look, what the Celtics did last year was basically buy into the whole "we are a team", "we are destiny", blah blah blah. But this year they will get their card pulled in the playoffs by a tougher more physical team that will realize, individually this team is soft in the core.

F**CK "I scream because I think Im hard" KG, F**CK "I'm a little bitch" Paul Pierced....and F**CK the greatest accomplishment in my life were those two twins in He Got Game Ray Allen. Go to hell Doc Rivers and take your shiny ass oily forehead with you. Word on the street is that G Bush is going to invade your dome for all the oil. War KB24 and war wearing sweat pants to the strip club. Boom....im outta here.

  1. This isn't a turf war, its the NBA. Talking smack is a great way to throw your opponent off their game and with all the complaining around the NBA it seems to be working. Why would KG want to get into a fight? So he can lose some money and get suspended? You don't have to be hard, you just have to be good.

Yes, Richardson may have grown up in poverty but some people are big enough to overcome that, especially when they are handed millions of dollars. Don't make excuses for him. He's a moron and he's whats wrong with society. People would rather blame their environment than overcome it.

Posted by The Real Truth November 20, 08 10:25 AM
  1. Knowing a bit about where Leon Powe, Paul Pierce and Tony Allen come from I am sure that they are not afraid of Richardson's neighborhood. Maybe next time he goes to the hole Big Baby can plant his whiney butt...

Posted by MrCantBelieveIt November 20, 08 11:22 AM
  1. Richardson is the best actor. He was crying like a little baby Tuesday night, and when someone took it to the hoop, he cried more. He was the first one to be running his mouth and putting up his dukes. Maybe the ref should have turned away and let him get thrown around like the piece of shit paper he is. That would never happen in Boston, as the refs have the biggest hard-ons to call fouls on the C's. As for some of the people talking shit about KG, Pierce, and the boys. Shut up and find an agent. Try out for the NBA and try and take them up and down the court for a quarter, Guarantee that you turn blue, pass out and die because you can't keep up. After all the game is played easier from the comfort of your chair.

  1. Its funny:
All these people who have issues with KG's intensity have either of two problems:
    A. They are jealous because they didnt have the skills at 19 to make it in the NBA. That "street" crap you see on TV with the "and one" show doesnt cut it in the real game.
    B. They have a certain "issue" in the short pants, and get upset whenever they see a man acting intense. It makes them shrink up like a cold winter day can do.

And perhaps I will take my fake ass "gangstah" (nice use of the h btw), back to the hood....and by hood I mean the 310, aka, land of milk and honey. Just sit back and get your arousal on everytime you hear KG scream, or see paul pierce throw up another fall away leaning to the side jumper. And be honest Steven, have you ever seen a face that oily before? No wonder oil is trading at $133 dollars a barrel...Doc's been hoarding it on his face the past year. Posted by Ball2345 November 20, 08 10:10 PM
  1. The Celtics are wack. QRich is right in this sense. Punks like House, Perkins, Lowe and Tony Allen should shut their mouths and thank God that Kevin Mchale did the Celtics a favor and took the poo poo platter for KG. And because those losers have KG (who's a career choker), Ray Allen (one dimensional) and Pierce (a 'thug' who throws up gang signs during games) they talk trash to vets who've been in the league longer than them. And lastly Doc Rivers is a joke and the only reason he won is because he has three hall of famers with a defensive specialist as an assistant coach.

Posted by Your dad November 20, 08 11:03 PM
  1. Ball2345, inner city culture isn't an excuse to act like an idiot. Quentin Richardson is a millionaire, not some poor kid growing up in the 'hood. Using the excuse that he's part of the environment he grew up in is a cop out. Some people can and have overcome growing up in less than desirable situations (Paul Pierce, Leon Powe come to mind immediately) without acting like an idiot. If you consider making threats and acting gangster as part of African American culture, I feel sorry for you. Its not a black or white thing, its an acceptable behavior in society thing. How many normal, blue or white collar jobs could Quentin make those same remarks and not get fired or suspnded in? I'd be gone from my office job making comments like that. Quentin needs to grow up and worry more about playing basketball than representing the 'hood.

Posted by Sean November 21, 08 09:56 AM
  1. For Christ's sake, we're talking about basketball, not gang violence. How "hard" the Celtics are is meaningless. This is like arguing that while the Celtics might be at the top of their game, Q-Rich would totally wipe the floor with them in a bake-off. It might be true, but it's not germane to what he and KG get paid for.

Nice try, I lived in Culver City in the late 80's...I know all about the different sets. No, it isn't Compton, Crenshaw, or Long Beach...but take a stroll through Culver City...its plenty tough enough. Clearly you are a Laker fan, we all know you wont claim a Clipper fan until they win something. I proudly wore my Bird jersey in high school, and took crap for it in the streets as well, but guess what? I am still here, I guess that makes me "hard"? Your team is coached by Phil Jackson, if there was ever a guy who rode the coat tails of great players, it would be him. He had MJ and Pippen in Chicago, then he had the most dominant big man in his prime with Shaq and Kobe along for the ride. You must still be hurting from the ASS kicking your sissy Hollywood boys took last year? Diesel was exactly right when he asked Kobe how his ass tasted. Shaq went on to take it in Miami, while Kobe and Phil were left to fight with each other.
You aren't tough Al, and you aint "straight outta Compton, yo". My guess is you "roll" from Santa Barbara or Orange County.....thats what I call the hood, G!
So take your Kobe 1 on 5 while the other 4 Lackers watch, rape a girl then kiss your wife's ass by buying her a new ring, 7 footer who cant rebound Spanish/non Latino, Zen ptchuli washing coach back to Inglewood where the team aint no good. How does that game six final score taste?
