Suspension surprises Celtics

Posted by Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff November 18, 2008 11:54 AM

Celtics coach Doc Rivers was surprised by the NBA's suspension of Kevin Garnett, who will miss Tuesday night's game against New York.

"I think it's a joke, honestly," Rivers said. "But they (the NBA) did it and we have live with it. I'm just amazed the officials looked at the play for five to 10 minutes and didn't even think Kevin deserved more than just a technical, and the league looks at it and gives him a suspension. I just wish we had more consistency in our league, I really do."

Garnett and Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut were assessed technical fouls on the play during the Celtics 102-97 overtime victory Saturday night.

Rivers compared the play to a confrontation involving Phoenix center Shaquille O'Neal.

"You look at Shaq's foul," Rivers said, "I hate to call out names, but where a guy flies out of the air, he gets fined and Kevin can't play. You factor in the money Kevin loses and the suspension to two guys who had a fight in the Phoenix game, it makes no sense."

  1. I cannot beleive that decision. I couldn't belevie Garnett got a foul called or a technical on that play. Bogut was the agressor and actually hit KG in the face on that play. Bogut was flaling his elbows everywhere. This can only be characterized as idiotic. Hooray for Doc for calling it like it is.

  1. I didn't think the play warranted a suspension--from the angle I saw, it actually seemed pretty routine. I have no problem with the NBA cracking down on certain types of behavior (indeed it should), but it needs to be more consistent. I agree with Doc--this one was totally out of left field.

  1. Preach it Doc! David Stern needs to get his ventriloquist dummy looking face out of the NBA.

  1. Doc's comments make total sense, why can't the Celtics appeal this suspension so Garnett can play and give the NBA a little longer to review this incident. It seems like a crap call to suspend Garnett when Shaq only gets a fine and he was out there throwing people around???

  1. I guess its the only way the rest of the NBA can stop the Celtics from winning Banner #18!!!

  1. One game suspension without pay will cost Garnett $301,829.00......I bet he also wishes he had been merely fined $25k like Shaq.

My question...who gets the $301K? Do the Celtics get to keep it or does it get paid to the NBA?

  1. This call has to be explained by the league office! If that play calls for a one sided suspension then this entire season will be filled with bizarre calls and suspensions! I think that every time there's a little fuss anywhere in the league and no suspension is given the Celtics and fans of basketball should send a formal protest.
How can we reach the league office?

  1. KG hit Bogut with an open fist in the face. How can that not be a suspension?

  1. All KG did was swing his arms to clear away Bogut's arms after Bogut whacked him in the mouth. He clearly did not swing his arm in the direction of Bogut's head. Intent was not there.

  1. Come on guys?! Were you watching the same game or what? KG bitch slapped Bogut in the forehead quite clearly! NBA rules state any contact above the shoulders won't be tolerated... So tough luck KG your suspended!

  1. Celtic crybabies. How could Bogut who got fouled on the play, get ejected? Yes, I know he a had a previous techincal, but KG made the foul, When Bogut came down, KG slapped him with an open hand. Doc got to choose who would shoot the freethrows.
The Bucks got the short end, Garnett should have been tossed right then. The ref's make a mistake in calling a double techical, then watch the replay. They couldn't rescind the techincalon Bogut. Again, the NBA is looking after it's "Golden Goose".

  1. Another arbitrary decision from the league office. Bogut instigated, Garnett retaliated, fine them both (Bogut more than KG) to show you don't approve and let's move on. Suspending them is so stupid. I smell a make-up call from KG's taunting of Jose Calderon last week that the refs inexplicably ignored. Incredible that there wasn't a technical called for that, but a suspension for responding to Bogut's face swipe is out of whack.

  1. "Golden Goose"? Kobe and Lebrone are not part of this discussion. Besides we all know that Stern is so drunk on Kobe juice that he hasn't made a competent decision in years.
I like Shaq, especially since he left the Fakers, but a fine for pushing half the team off the floor but KG gets a one game suspension for a slap. I'll check Webester's for the definition of parity on that one.

  1. Man...The Celtics are crybabies. They expect to get away with everything. Yall Nigg's are men just like everyone else. K.G. got caught hittin homeboy and he got ejected...the league made the right call. Man up kevin...stop all that crying. You and Paul Pierce.

  1. Ralph, Bogut hit KG twice in the face and did worse to KG and I have no doubt it was intentional. Bogut tried to make it look unintentional but give me a break. KG was hit twice what do you expect KG to do in the heat of the moment? And it is not KGs fault that Bogut was tossed because he already had a tech. Bogut should have been kicked out as well. If iwhat Bogut did was so unintentional why did they upgrade the foul call? NBA front office completely inconsistent and downright unfair. If this type of thing is going to warrant a suspension the league is going to have a tough time having a game because alot of players will be suspended.

  1. Yeah and Bucks fans are not crybabies when their precious Bogut was rightfully ejected for having 2 techs which is an automatic ejection. Hypocites!
