Celtics win in overtime

Posted by Julian Benbow, Globe Staff January 12, 2009 10:06 PM

So never mind how much time Paul Pierce is clocking, even though it's the longest he's been on the court since November when he played 45 minutes on back to back nights against these Raptors and the Atlanta Hawks.

The Celtics have needed Pierce every minute he's been on the court.

Right after Ray Allen hit a three ball from straightaway to make it 103-97, Pierce came down and dribbled into the corner where Anthony Parker, Andrea Bargnani, and Roko Ukic all closed in on him. It looked like he was going to try to muscle up a shot, but he hit Leon Powe with a baseball pass under the basket for a layup that made it 106-99. He just connected for two free throws (he's 10 of 11 from the stripe on the night), he's got four assists, 9 rebounds, and 37 points (a season-high, a point higher than the 36 he threw at Toronto back in November).

The Raptors refuse to stop swinging - they called a timeout with 1.9 seconds left down 6 after Rondo threw a meaningless bounce pass alley-oop to Powe - but Pierce had been hitting them with body blows since the fourth quarter.

Final score: 115-109, Celtics.

  1. Did anyone else notice Mark Kotsay sitting in the front row next to the Celtics' bench? He was wearing a red hat (not a Sox cap), and he was fooling with his phone/blackberry for the majority of the game. I don't think it was mentioned that he was in attendance, so I thought I'd point that out.

  1. Hard fought win but a win nontheless. Keep playing hard boys! Those Lakers supporters that usually troll these boards are strangely quiet lately. ;-P

  1. Strangely quiet? What effing board have you been reading? We've posted far more consistently than any of the so-called Celtic "fans" around here. Believe me, no one in the NBA is impressed with your 2 wins over a bottom feeder.

  1. Nick, the Lakers won't beat any of the top teams in the East in the finals this year.
If they are not playing the Celtics, good luck winning against Cleveland or Orlando.
I am looking forward to attending the Lakers game in Boston in February.

  1. "We've posted far more consistently than any of the so-called Celtic "fans" around here."

Obviously, because it seems Laker fans have an Oedipus complex or something. Typical LA fan: more worried about pointing the finger and saying "nya nya nya" than worrying about their own team.

  1. Susan, the Celtics won't beat any of the bottom feeder teams in the West this year. Well, at least one of our statements is true.

  1. Nick I would worry more about your team come playoff time. That's when Gasol turns to marshmellow, Bynum will wilt up like the amateur he is, and Kobe will just get himself frustrated because he feels like he has to carry the load all by himself again. Don't believe me? Try replaying last year's Finals to jog your memory.

  1. Classless,
What have we told you about using big words you don't know the meaning of? Let's look up "Oedipus complex" and go from there. Your teacher should have a dictionary or encyclopedia you can borrow. And, in the future, let's try to stick with words of monosyllabic variety.

Damn, the Celtic nation is in a sad state these days...

  1. Hey Disco - congrats on your one successful year. When was your last title before that? 2002? 1999? Oh, damn - 1985? Give us a call in L.A. when you can roll off a couple more.

Posted by Nick Van Exel January 14, 09 02:43 PM
  1. A couple more? How about 17 total championships? I mean if we're going by franchises here then we may as well go all out.

  1. Never fails. Celtic "fans" run out of things to say, so they run back to the championships won 50 years ago. Those championships were great and all, but as I've said, the Celtics have been IRRELEVANT for 23 years. You want to sit on the porch recalling the glory days, go ahead. But here in L.A. we've been busy winning NBA titles (5 since 1985) while the Celtics became synonymous with mediocre basketball.

  1. So what's the difference between reminiscing about championships from 20 years ago as opposed to 10 years ago or even 5 years ago? The past is the past is the past no matter how you spin it Nick. You want to get into the worth of a franchise and I gave you the Celtics 17 banners up on the rafters. It's nothing to do about running out of things to say, that's just the truth plain and simple.

  1. Someone needs to ban this troll: he says the same thing about 19 times in a row. At least cannibus is amusing!

If you have nothing to add to this blog, go elsewhere.

  1. Crying again? Must be something in the Boston water. Sorry, your mommy is not going to come defend you and make the bad man go away. Try defending yourself, troll.

Listen, you and Disco must be close to finishing the third grade, so you really should be able to follow this. The modern day Boston Celtics are mediocre at best. One good year does not immediately wipe away 23 years of crappy basketball. Were they a great team in the early 80's? Yes. Were they a great team in the late 50's and early 60's? Yes. Have they been a great team since 1985? No - they've consistently been among the worst. But if you want to "reminisce," Disco, pull up a rocking chair, pour yourself a glass of lemonade and knock yourself out.

And Pork, if you have nothing to add to this blog, please - go elsewhere.

  1. No one's even debating whether or not they were of the elite a few years ago. That much is obvious. The previous 20 years before the trades happened haven't kept up with the glory days of the past but guess what? The fans were still there. Sure, it's a lot more prevalent now since the team is one of a handful of championship contenders but Boston sports fans are pretty dedicated to their franchises if you haven't noticed. Even during that god awful year where we lost 18 in a row people came to watch (including me) because there was loyalty and Celtic pride. Scoff and insult all you want but it doesn't change the fact Celtic fans have remained strong and been rewarded for their fortitude by one of our own, Danny Ainge! The circle of life continues.

    Posted by DI$CO January 16, 09 10:12 AM
  1. Don't forget Kevin McHale - he's as responsible as Ainge. And don't try that "we stayed strong" crap - the stands were empty for years when your Celtics were stinking up the joint. Try dressing it up however you like, but a turd is a turd. And by turd I mean Celtic fan.
