Marbury in Ray Allen's thoughts

Posted by Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff January 3, 2009 02:28 PM

Celtics guard Ray Allen has followed Stephon Marbury’s career since they were teenagers. And Marbury’s situation as a New York Knicks’ outcast and potential Celtic recruit is in Allen’s thoughts as the teams prepare to meet at Madison Square Garden Sunday.

“It’s speculation, I don’t really have to think about it,” Allen said after the Celtics’ practice in Waltham Saturday. “I learned a long time ago to deal with everything and everyone we have here, that’s where our focus has to be.”

Marbury said he would be interested in joining the Celtics, if his contract with the Knicks is bought out.

“I think it is somewhat disappointing watching what has happened with Stephon,” Allen said. It’s disappointing, because whatever is going on with the Knicks, I thought he could still help that team. It’s not like he’s a guy who can’t play basketball anymore.”

Allen said Marbury is likely gaining extra motivation.

“It’s speculation, but if he has a reason for coming here,” Allen said, “I’m sure he’s taking care of himself.”

  1. He's not a winner. Plain and simple. Why mess with success?

  1. Please take him - we have certainly had our fill of someone who is way too termpermental and has proven he is a loser everywhere he has gone. Please take him - he can only take your team one way and that is down.

  1. You guys are idiots the Celtics need front court help, why the hell would Steph sign to play less then 20min's a game?

  1. I agree Frankie. The only downside is Ainge having to cut someone from the current roster. They can't afford to lose a Bill Walker over a Marbury experiment that has to be aborted a week into it over some me first attitude from Steph. The reason I have no problem bringing him in is because the Cs are going to hold all the cards. If they have to say bye bye before the season is up it will further crack Starburys rep at a time he needs to heal old wounds.

  1. Stephon Marbury has been a disruptive influence wherever he played. He never demonstrated any sense of team play. It would IMHO be unwise to risk destroying the unity of the Celtics we now have by bringing him in, especially when the big need is for a big man.

  1. If Boston loses to the Knicks today, I'm coming back here and clowning you guys!!!

The Lakers own the Celtics and you will never fully recover from your Christmas Day thrashing. We opened your meat up and we revealed your inner weakness to the whole league!!!!! That's why the Knicks are bringing it to you right now as I type!!!!!

  1. OK, lets keep playing like crap and losing games on the bench, like tonight against a crappy Knicks team.

We need help on this effin team!!!!!!

  1. After watching tonight's fiasco, I say we should sign Starbury if and when he's released. I really don't understand the hang-up. The Knicks gave Starbury permission to talk to other teams. Why doesn't Ainge just promise half the MLE? Starbury could then offer to take a $2 million discount from his buyout, and it would be a done deal.

Face it, Rondo can't hit a wide open jumper. We need a backup PG, bad.

  1. HAHA!!!!!!!!!
    100-88!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Lakers broke you. And now we lead the NBA in the loss colum! Tonight, we play the same Roy-less Portland team that finished your West Coast road trip on such a devastating note.

The best part of it is that Andrew is due for a breakout game and Oden reeks of fresh meat. Andrew is gonna eat this kid alive!!!!!

And now that Pau finally tasted KG blood, he's playing out of his mind right now.

He,along with the other Lakers now own the Celtics.

Remember that while you watch a championship caliber team dominated another quality team tonight when we destroy the Blazers!!!!

  1. I agree with Coach D'Antoni. I would be happy if Marbury goes to Boston.

  1. Marbury can't play anymore, unless it's for the Bobcats or Grizzlies. We don't need empty stats.

  1. Look folks... In every bad relationship, there are two sets of fingerprints. Whether you like Stephon Marbury or not, the circumstances surrounding his situation did not happen in a vacuum and I doubt that he's solely to blame for the entire fiasco. If the Knicks were truly the professional organization they say they are, this problem would have been resolved a long time ago. There's no way on God's green earth that a player [any player] should be able to hold an organization hostage. Likewise, the organization should not feel the need to hold a player hostage. Especially one with a 20mln dollar contract and no court time. That's just stupid. So Ray is right... it is a shame on a lot of fronts. Now as I've said time and again; from a basketball perspective, bringing in Stephon Marbury makes all the sense in the world. The criticism I read in all these forums has to do with perception and there's no way that we [on the outside looking in] can know the truth about the situation, so emotional responses to the idea of Steph going to the Celtics makes no sense. If you look at what the Celtics have coming off the bench, Marbury is an upgrade from Tony Allen [in every respect] and Eddie House [in regards to a floor leader]. I've said before that I like what Eddie House brings to the Celtics, but Tony Allen is not who he thinks he is (better than James Posey) nor is he what the Celtics thought he'd be. Another thing, if the players themselves are saying they'd welcome Steph, "obviously" they know more about what they need than any of us. Perhaps we should be listening to them and not assume that we know more than they do or why they say what they say. We are not in their minds or their locker room.

    'Nuff said.
