Report: Celtics a possible destination for Marbury

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff January 2, 2009 09:41 AM

The Celtics are a potential landing spot for Stephon Marbury should the Knicks eventually grant the troubled point guard his release, unnamed sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

There are still several hoops to jump through, the most obvious being Marbury's release from the Knicks. The sides have failed to reach an agreement after weeks of "fruitless and oft-contentious buyout talks," Stein wrote. Marbury, who is on the books for $20.8 million this season, has not played a single game for New York this year.

How likely it that Marbury will eventually join the Celtics as a backup to Rajon Rondo? Even if the Knicks buy out Marbury, which might not happen for several months if at all, Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce would all likely have to agree that it's the right thing to do.

But if all of this happens, the Celtics and Marbury seem to each be interested in making it happen. Unnamed sources with knowledge of the situation told Stein that Boston is Marbury's preferred destination and the Celtics hope to sign him. When asked specifically about the likelihood of Marbury joining the Celtics this season, a team source predicted to Stein that "it will happen." Ainge did not comment to Stein on the situation, and has not commented on Marbury in general.

Should Marbury be granted his release, the other potential obstacle appears to be Marbury's reputation as a less-than-ideal teammate. Marbury asked out of Minnesota in 1999 when he was teammates with Kevin Garnett.

"We're not close at all, not really as close as we used to be," Garnett told the Globe's Marc Spears in early December of his relationship with Marbury. "I haven't really been following [the Marbury situation]. I watch it here and there when I go through the locker room when it's on TV. I hear about it. It's unfortunate. But I haven't been following it or had an assessment of it."

A Celtics source told Stein that Garnett "has voiced no opposition" to the team bringing in Marbury, though that isn't necessarily an endorsement, either.

  1. As talented as the man is, Marbury was poison (I'll play when I feel like it) in Minneapolis. And apparently that has not changed. Celtics don't need him and should avoid.

  1. Marbury would help RUIN this team; he's the opposite of everything this Celtics group stands for. He shouldn't even be in the NBA...

  1. I suppose the underlying logic is that we're ignoring the fact that Marbury has been labeled a cancer by virtually every NBA team he's ever played on, largely because he now recognizes he's no longer an alpha dog and will accept a backup role, especially with KG, Allen and Pierce to keep him in line.

I concede it's a great story line. But if Marbury was truly a competitor looking for a ring and to salvage his horrendous reputation, wouldn't he be inclined to stop quibbling about fines or an extra million dollars in his buy-out negotiations to get himself off the NY pine and into the Celtics rotation as soon as possible? Right now, the facts just don't seem to support what the Celtics hope they'll be getting from Marbury.

  1. Why on earth would the Celtics sign this self-centered "chemistry cancer" when Rondo is playing so well? Marbury is one of the most selfish players in NBA history and he's never made a single player around him better. Worse, this is rewarding the same kind of behavior that Boston fans were repulsed by with Manny Ramirez. I can't imagine that the possible upside outweighs the risks - and why, so this prima donna jerk can increase his now non-existent value and say he won a Championship on the way to another big contract next year?????

  1. My first reaction to this was horror. But then I remembered that Garnett and Marbury are old friends. So maybe KG could keep him in line, assuming Marbury is willing to take a lesser role and be a team player. And if not, they could always cut him.

  1. No freakin' way should Ainge even begin to explore this possiblity. The guy is a cancer. And he'd be purely a rental, so why the heck should Boston give up prospects for a guy who's only going to hurt the team.

    PLEASE DANNY...DON'T DO IT!!!

  1. Lets do it - his bad attitude will be slapped down if it rears ts ugly head - and it will, we need what he can do. Our record this season is 0-1 against the only team that matters.

  1. This would be a horrible decision for the Celtics to sign Marbury. He has done nothing but destroy ever team he's ever played on. I would loose all respect for Ainge if he signs Marbury. The C's proved in the playoffs last year that they can win without a marquee PG backup. When they finally figured out Cassell wasn't the right fit. Well- Marbury is 10x worse than Cassell as a selfish me first player.

  1. Better than having E.T. come off the bench.

C's should sign Starmet instead of Starbury.

  1. They need a solid BIG!

Posted by dp January 2, 09 12:07 PM
  1. I'm much less worried about the point guard situation than I am about the lack of size off the bench. Big Baby needs to go. He's just not capable of getting it done. I would love to see the Brad Miller trade happen. He would fit perfectly on this team and provide some much needed talent off the bench. As for Marbury, I think I would rather see him on the court than Eddie House chucking up horrible jump shots. He shoots tooooo much. Marbury is a very skilled scorer and passer. He could help the team IF, IF, IF...he doesn't act like a 10 year-old.

  1. How would this be a great story? He's all about himself. Anyone who thinks a player like this will all of a sudden get in line is crazy.

    NO. NO. NO.

Posted by baseballdiamond January 2, 09 12:11 PM
  1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! A player like Starbury is most definitely NOT a Celtic. Danny, DON'T DO IT, I IMPLORE YOU. Right now I like everyone on this team. I can't say that if Marbury signs.

Posted by Say NO to Marbury January 2, 09 12:14 PM
  1. I'd sign him.....this team will put him in his place...there is NO WAY they let him ruin them. Marbury wants to come be part of something bigger than himself and will be willing to show deference to a group that won the NBA TITLE last year and is off to a great start this year.

The reason we need him is because our second unit is useless offensively against the good teams. Cassell was valuable to our second unit last year in the playoffs because he could get his own shot and Marbury will surely be better than Cassell. It doesn't seem like Doc is ready to give Gabe Pruitt the minutes he needs to become a more consistent contributor and Eddie House is NOT a point guard. Marbury can play either guard position...sign him he'll make us better.

  1. I seem to remember similar lines when the prospects of Randy Moss coming to the Pats became public. The bottom line is that a veteran team with players and coaches who buy into the program will never be influenced by a supposed "cancer." That sort of thing only happens when the teams around such a player are fragile. The second he starts to peep, he and his veteran minimum contract will be out the door. I think Its definitely worth the gamble for some production off the bench (see last week's West Coast swing). By the way, any chance Posey is unhappy in N.O.? Thought I'd ask.

Celts need a sixth man and a back up PG, Marbury is a good option.

Posted by steve January 2, 09 12:18 PM
  1. um, did any of you guys watch us try to bring the ball up against LA when Rondo was on the bench? We NEED a backup point guard, and Cassell is not it. I am pretty sure Marbury certainly understands that's exactly what he would be by coming here. Its a low risk signing, if he acts up, see you later. If he buys into the team concept which I am sure the big three will make sure of, then our bench just got a lot stronger.

  1. If Marrbury buys into the system, he'd be a great addition, a la Dennis Johnson (who supposedly also lacked the team-first concept) back in the early 80's.

As soon as his ship begins to sail, just say Bon Voyage! Have a nice spring!

  1. Who would you rather have Marbury or Cassell? Please Danny, if you need a few minutes at point, you've already have him. We need long and tall not short and discontented. Sam's the man, not Stiff me.

Posted by BONMEBON January 2, 09 12:37 PM
  1. Yes, Yes, Yes....... I like it. Bring him aboard. Just like what the Patriots did with bad boys Corey Dillon and Randy Moss. The Celtics have a nucleus of veteran players that will keep him in line. If he doesn't conform then they cut him. But the fact is that, as was the case with Dillon and Moss, Marbury is in the twilight of his career. He has something to prove and he wants to win a championship.

The other part of this is that the Celtics need a back-up point guard that can penetrate and score. Sure the bench is okay some nights but other nights they stink. They don't get any penetration with House at point and he's pressed all the way up the floor.

The Celtics need another a bench scorer and probably another big man to compete for a championship this year. Marbury is the scorer off the bench they need.

    An emphatic "YES!"

  1. After this 1-3 road trip the celtics need bench help big time. How many times has KG gone off on the bench because they let the othet team back in the game? The celtics bench is inconsistent and needs some help. If Marbuy comes here I would be extremly happy.

  1. I'm a Knicks fan. Marbury is basketball's Manny with half the talent and twice the selfishness. Could he pull it together for a few months - maybe. But I would never sign him.

  1. I think it is a greatidea. They def need the fire power off the bench. As many people are saying, if you put him around the right group of veteran players and on a championship contender he will not be a cancer. Exactly like Randy Moss.

Posted by Alex January 2, 09 12:48 PM
  1. NOOOOooOOOOooOoOO!. Every team Marbury has been on has gotten better by leaps and bounds immediately AFTER he left. He is selfish and me-first, the exact opposite of a team player, and makes everybody around him worse.

    Posted by E January 2, 09 12:55 PM
  1. The Celtics need a BIG man to back Perkins. Unless they plan to trade one or two of their players to get a big man and Marbury is there to replace whomever is traded. They won't repeat without a solid back up for Perkins.

Posted by VA Beach Fan January 2, 09 01:02 PM
  1. We need a big not Starbury. I don't know if I can root for him. In theory he will help because House is no point guard and can't create his own shot but we still need a big man. It's hard to me to believe this is a good idea from a chemistry standpoint. From a playing standpoint he is definitely a better point guard the House , Pruitt and Cassell.

Posted by Me January 2, 09 01:02 PM
  1. Did anyone see that Portland Trailblazer game? You think we can afford another bench effort like that? The Celts need to do something.

Posted by Destonio January 2, 09 01:07 PM
  1. I'm willing to go with Tommy Heinsohn, if you listen to him comment on Marbury when we played NY, you will notice he was positive. He says the Knicks should pay him, too. I'm willing to let the gossipers gossip and go with Tommy. Bring Marbury in. I think our team can handle any issues. Winning changes things, and he has skills. He needs to improve his resume if he wants to play next year. On the side I loved how he had those inexpensive shoes manufactured so that kids don't have to find $120 to be cool. He comes here and I'll get a pair.

Posted by Ck January 2, 09 01:09 PM
  1. I keep reading how bringing in Marbury is doable because the Big 3 could keep him in line. My thinkng is why even burden JG,Truth & Ray with this.. They need to concentrate on winning Games not babysitting some malcontent!!

Marbury = Manny... The talent means nothing if you can't be a good team player.
Starbury's only redeeming quality is that he put affordable sneakers on the market.
The Celtics should definately stay clear of this guy!

Posted by Chowdah January 2, 09 01:12 PM
  1. Okay, list me on the top of any "Marbury Haters", because if there is one person in this league that defined it's WORST, it's him...and I've rooted against this guy wherever he may be. Taking that into context, there have been LOTS of athletes in this town that have turned the corner with veterans around. The Pats did it with Bryan Cox, Corey Dillon and now Randy Moss.....the Sox and Manny...well, IMO, baseball is the MOST individual of team sports....Manny made such a difference in the lineup that the manager decided to let him play...and put up with his crap in private......the celts...we'll I THINK if Ainge and Doc and the Vets feel like they can keep him in line....then maybe it can work out. I'm not a huge proponent of it, but if there is any team that can control him AND get rid of him if he's trouble....then I think these guys can. Again, not sure, I'd rather have a big guy like PJ Brownish, but you can never be deep enough.

  1. I am a big time Celtics fan. I will not root for Marbury under any circumstances no matter what uniform he is wearing. The fact that this selfish ingrate would be allowed to soil a Celtic uniform only makes it worse. We're supposed to be okay with this because the Celtic locker room is strong enough to keep him in line?? This is what it has come to? Character is completely irrelevant if his teammates can keep him in line? And the Randy Moss comparisons are just stupid. First of all Moss is a significantly superior talent. Second, he has a sincerity about him that Marbury has never had. Third, Moss has been universally liked as a teammate where the opposite is true of Marbury and fourth, the Pats locker room has 50 players most of whom are veterans who Moss respected not to mention Kraft and Belichick. Marbury doesn't respect anyone and has always overrated his own abilities and value to the team. No thanx.

Posted by BobL January 2, 09 01:22 PM
  1. No risk. If he starts to cause trouble, drop him. No obligation to keep him. He'd be a rental. What's to lose?

Posted by Jonny Longball January 2, 09 01:23 PM
  1. No, no, and no for every single reason known to man. 1) He's an idiot. The Celtics don't suffer idiots well. 2) He'll screw up the locker room. I know that everyone will say "Oh, Garnett and Pierce and Allen will keep him in line." No, they won't. They are neck and neck with Cleveland for the 1 seed. They'll be doing that all year. One or two games wasted on this guy and his stunts are useless. The Celtics need another big more than they need another PG. Yeah, they need another PG, but they need another big more than that. O'Bryant isn't the answer, Big Baby's not tall enough, and Scal doesn't play down there very well. So they need another big more than anything else.

Talk to me about Mutombo. That's who they need.

Posted by JJ January 2, 09 01:24 PM
  1. i think they should deff. do this....he could be a good backup for rajon rondo and a mentor similar to sam cassell last year i also think that would mean cassell retiring and joining the c's coaching staff....eddie house could move to his 2 guard spot and be a spot up shooter and tony allen could backup pierce i think if the celtics could retain pj brown after the all star game somehow i think they could deff. repeat...this team will be able to rest their starters during the regular season

Posted by darren January 2, 09 01:36 PM
  1. What ATLceltsFan said. There's already a personality to this team. If Seau, Brady, Harrison et al can bring Moss into line, then so can KG & pals bring Marbury in as a sixth man.

And if not... then cut him. Little downside.

House can run the point and Starbury will run a solid 2 in our second unit, how can you oppose this?

  1. One area we seem to ignore is a great deal of players who suffer from his type of attitude, have been behaving like that for years. Going back to and including college. If the behavior is being condoned for the sake of winning, why the hell should he change.
After all the nonsense he's done in this league, he's currently on the books for 20 plus million annually in NY. And we're still having a discussion about the possibility of acquiring him.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ...

  1. To sign him will require several calls to the Poison Control Center after about a month. That is all he is.

Lets spend the time and money on finding another big man to help. That is what we need.

I know people want a big but the fact is you get the best talent you can and right now that is Marbury.

Posted by ensoul January 2, 09 02:13 PM
  1. If the Celtics can work a contract to their advantage, for example by being able to jettison him at the VERY FIRST sign of trouble at no cost -- then why not? The Big 4 are professional enough to handle him.

  1. What is this baloney about his personality? You don't know him, you know what the losers in NYC think of him. I'll go with Heinsohn thank you, bring the man onboard. Watch what happens, you don't have much faith in this team if you think it can't control one guy.

To many pink hatted RedSox fans here, the same dopes who cheer for Scalabrini for no reason and are ruining his season. Thanks kids, now shut up.

Don't sweat the downside, bring the guy in. This is not a soap opera this is athletics. We'll lose with House under pressure.

Posted by CK January 2, 09 02:40 PM
  1. Please do not do this. What the Celtics really need is a back up big man. I love Leon but he is only 6'7. What do you think we need more? A big mouthed selffish back up point guard, or a big man thay can spell KG and Perk off the bench. What are they going to do in a playoff series against the size of Cleveland, Orlando, and even the Toronto? The size problem off the bench really started to show in LA. They had no answer for Odom off the bench. Then the size problem carried over to Portland. Big baby is not the answer off the bench. The guy is another Antione Walker with less shooting rage.

Posted by Tnutts January 2, 09 02:40 PM
  1. Reclamation projects have their limitations. I'm not sure Marbury would fit within those limits. The cost to the Celtics (for this season, anyway) would be minimal so they can jetison him at the first sign of trouble. I would suggest that any contract language would include counseling while a team member. The first missed session will be cause for termination.

Posted by fredtrem January 2, 09 02:43 PM
  1. he's said he wants to play and i think if he came here her would be a "good citizen" to prove to everyone he can still be a good pg... also look how bad an environment New York has been the last couple years, the whole Isaiah Thomas thing and Larry Brown thing and also bringin in players like Zach Randolf, Eddy Curry, Quentin Richardson etc. were all cancers in that locker room.
The C's have a strong locker room/organization and I highly doubt Marbury himself could break it up. Plus, if KG, Paul, Ray, Doc really had a problem with Marbury comin here it wouldnt happen.

This situation is the same as the Patriots with Moss and Dillon. The Celtics have enough veterans to keep Marbury in line.....

Posted by Sanity January 2, 09 02:58 PM
  1. Yes, bring in Marbury. The Celtics can still trade for a big man since they won't need to use any assets/players to get Marbury. The bench is atrocious and what's left on the market are slim pickings. If you want to repeat, Marbury is the best out there. To those who don't want him, please let the rest of us know how you plan on improving the bench so the Big 3 has another shot at a title this year?

  1. Of Course The C's need some PG insurance (i.e. Lakers gameshowed our 2nd squad to be woeful!) especially with young Rondo's travails over the last few years where it seeemingly looks like he's always getting splinters from the Red Auerbach floor! Look, Marbury could be helpful when used in the strict disciplinarian methods that Doc has promulgated over the years. I think it's like this CELTIC front office; if he comes aboard, any symptom of "cancer" will need expeditious and clinical removal to ensure no metastasizing of sickness!!!

    Posted by ima58 January 2, 09 03:18 PM
  1. No, no, no. What if he is a great teamate right until the playoffs and then starts pulling his bull? A little too late to release him because the next in line hasn't played HALF the year. And as for the lakers, We played a bad game, the lakers played thier best and the officiating was horrible, and the lakers still barely squeaked by us. In a 7 game series, we crush the fakers! if we pick up someone, make it a BIG!

  1. You do not want this chump on your great Celtics team. He is a cry baby, hog, selfish, horrible person, and those are his good points. Taking Crybury Marbury would end the Celtics domination. He isn't even worth taking for the practice squad. That said, if the Celtics sign him, it's good news for the rest ot the league. Don't say we didn't warn you!

  1. Do it after talking to current Cs. If we pay him almost nothing and can get rid of him.

We get a big man when we can. Somehow I think Cs brass knows this.

He will play elsewhere, and would play right now for almost any other team, but Knicks are loaded.

  1. It's a tottaly different situation than the one Terrell Owens is in. Owens is a starter, a star player, someone they just paid a lot of money to re-sign with the team. Marbury will have a low money contract and it won't be guaranteed. One mis-step and they open the trap door. Where's the downside?

You don't think that this guy would just love to play on a championship contender that, oh by the way, happens to be in the same division as the Knicks. Come on people. The guys human. People around him said he came into camp in great shape and played well in the preseason. Even his coach was saying those things. Then they shut him out of the building.

He has to want to repair his reputation at this point in his career and I'm sure he'd love to throw it right into the faces of the NY Knicks owner and coach.

  1. Yo if you all are REAL NBA fans then go get a copy of THE BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE which is this popular book Marbury's cousin Jamel Thomas released last September! When I 1st heard about it I thought it was just one of his jealous family members dishing dirt on Steph, but I was wrong! The story is actually a really great read about this huge basketball family that lives in Coney Island Brooklyn, NYC. I also read this other book titled "THE LAST SHOT" which featured a young Marbury & his other cousin Corey Johnson who actually helped Jamel Thomas write the book plus Sebastian Telfair is part of this family too! Oh and ironically "The Beautiful Struggle" talks about how Marbury, Kevin Garnett & Thomas all used to be close buddies, but once Steph got to the league and then forced a trade from Minn. to Jersey it ruined Thomas's chances of not only being completely left out of the 1999 NBA Draft, but also a chance at playing in Minn. while both K.G and Steph was there. In the 7th Chapter called The Hidden Truth, Thomas writes about how Marbury advised him to switch his Agent so he could hook him up with one from David Faulk's Company. Yet Steph never came through for his own cousin & intentionally ruined his chance to get drafted even though Thomas was an All-Big East 1st Team player who average 22 points his senior year!!! I always wondered why Thomas never got drafted & if this is true then Marbury is truely the worse ever!!! So my thoughts on Boston picking him up...I DON'T THINK SO

  1. This move would guarantee back to back championships. Marbury is hands down on of the best of his generation. If we learned anything from this team last year it's that veterans on a winning team are able to put their egos aside and focus on the ultimate goal.

    Posted by starbs1 January 2, 09 03:54 PM
  1. AN interesting thought. If he does come here it has to be on Moss-like terms. One screw-up and your done. Also, Sam Cassell is done Marbury's [potential] signing just makes it official. They need a big far more than they need a point guard. In hindsight Moss wanted to win; not sure anyone would feel comfortable in saying that of Marbury.

    Posted by friar5 January 2, 09 03:56 PM
  1. A brief history of Starbury's career:
--Minnesota sucks with him. They exchange him for Sam Cassell and go to conference finals.
--NJN sucks with him. They upgrade to J-Kidd and go to the NBA Finals twice.
--PHX sucks with him. They exchange him for Nash, and become really good.
--Knicks suck with him. He stops playing, and they are respectable this year.

I guess he's never joined a good team; only left bad teams who went on to be good.

    Posted by It's me . . . January 2, 09 04:23 PM
  1. First of all, I don't think Rondo would be real thrilled about having Marbury looking over his shoulder (but I could be wrong). Second, how long would Marbury be happy playing limited minutes behind Rondo. Third, when did Marbury ever play any defense in this league? I know he can score, but everybody has to make a commitment to defense in this system. Lastly, win or lose, the team should have some standards - Marbury appears to have none... Marbury is not an improvement to the bench. If these were not issues, he would be playing in NY - 20 million should buy some level of motivation to shut your mouth and play. Other players will become available as the year goes on.

Posted by KobeWearsAPurpleThong January 2, 09 05:26 PM
  1. Remember what Boston fans were saying about the underperforming "bad teammate" Randy Moss coming to NE from the Raiders. Marbury will have to adjust to being a role player on this celtics roster, and would be a major upgrade from having tony allen attempt to run the point when Rondo is getting rest. Also, Boston would need to sign steph to a 1 year contract so the reward would definitely out weigh all risks.

Every time he went into the game on the west coast, we blew leads. Big Baby and Powe do not scare opposing players. (God, I'm listening to Mark Stein on ESPN tell us that Marbury is interested in the Celts and how it would be financially a good move for the team! Say it ain't so, Danny!)

The people who think this is bad and are saying no are the same people who didn't want to see KG here and think that Tom Brady is the best quarterback ever (COMPLETELY FALSE, he's not even as good as Peyton Manning). Anyways, this is a great thing for Boston if it works out. We will not repeat unless we get a strong 6th man and Marbury is THAT GUY. We need him right now, he's in amazing shape, and he wants to win. Mark my words all you ignorant fans who call yourself true fans.

If he plays prima donna, cut the guy. Make sure the contract is laced with incentives, and also the ability to say bye bye if he so much as gives Doc or his teammates a negative look or comment.

What do the C's have to lose?

They still might need a big man, though, for the bench to be complete.

  1. I cannot imagine why the Celtics would do this deal. The guy is a pain in the rear and always has been and always will be by appearences. Another poster had it right...if he want out of NY so badly why is he making it such a contest? We have Rajon Rondo!! And I don't see an egotistical cry baby like Marbury taking a backup role in stride for very long before he starts to be a problem. And even if KG, PP, and RA do try to keep him "in line"...what if he doesn't want to be kept "in line"?? Then he becomes a cancer on this team too. I say don't fix it if it ain't broke....this team ain't broke. Leave well enough alone!

  1. Everyone posting on here saying no, no ,no is overreacting. Of course his track record says he is a bum. Do you not think the Celtics management is unaware of this. Obviously he only comes here if the Celtics leadership (players and coaches) have a sit down with him. If they like what they here from Steph, and make him understand just one screw up and he's out the door, this could be a very beneficial move. Steph still has talent, he can score and has averaged over 6 assists over his career. And if Peirce and Allen can learn to play defense, who would have ever thought that, maybe this guy can too.

Posted by Adam January 2, 09 06:06 PM
  1. Who knows, maybe we could trade House, Davis, and Scal for a big. All three of them suck anyways, never should have re-signed House especially. We would have been better off going with Pruitt and signing a vet at a later time if he proved he wasn't ready. By now it probably to late in the season to go with Pruitt, and House would probably suffer even more. Also, signing Cassell was a waste, even if Doc's plan was to save him for the playoffs, he showed last year he doesn't really contribute much. Get Marbury and find a trade for a big.

  1. Definitely do it. It would be a nice asset to the team. And if Marbury really wants to play and have a shot at winnin a title he won't ruin the team. Look at what happened when they were sayin Kevin and Ray were comin to town. They said it wouldnt work out. Well look now. We need a solid backup to Rondo anyhow. A player who can push the tempo like Rondo does. Marbury can do that; plus he can shoot. Picture this second lineup down the stretch; Marbury, Cassell (when he's activated), Tony Allen, Leon Powe and Davis. That's an improvement to what we have now and helps the starters rest instead of keepin 1 starter out there with the second unit like they've been doin. Plus we can still aquire a center now that
Mutumbo's still a Rocket. How about Joe Smith?! If the patriots can tame Rodney and Randy why can't the C's tame "Starbury". Hell, even the Sox put up with Manny. Let him have a chance.

Lighten up and enjoy the ride. If Marbury comes and decides to play
this team destroys everybody. It'd be like bringing Walton off the bench.
If not let him go. Either way it's pretty clear this team needs some help. Who else is out there?

Posted by jn January 2, 09 06:32 PM
  1. We need a back-up point guard that can penetrate and pass to the big guys inside. House is not a real PG and is holding back our 2nd unit by playing the wrong role. It would be a once in a lifetime chance for Marbury to turn around his reputation and accept a secondary role. Its a risk, but worth taking. I do not think we can repeat without Posey, unless we beef up the 2nd unit.

WHOEVER SAYS HE DOESNT PASS AND SHARE THE ROCK OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WATCH THE TEAM. HE DOESNT HAVE TO KEEP THE BALL WHEN HE HAS THREE STARS AROUND HIM INSTEAD OF 1 "STARBURY". RONDO IS THE DEFINITION OF A SOLID POINT. SURE HIS SHOT COULD BE BETTER. RAY'S COULD BE BETTER TOO. IM NOT SAYIN DONT TAKE A CHANCE ON MARBURY. IM ALL 4 IT. BUT DONT THINK THEY ARE LEAVIN RONDO OUT TO DRY. AND RONDO"S CONFIDENCE WON'T DECLINE IF ANYTHIN IT'LL MAKE HIM WORK HARDER TO KEEP HIS SPOT.

  1. The Corey Dillon, Randy Moss analogies don't quite cut it. Sure they had their problems, but the root cause was centered around the fact that they were fierce competitors who couldn't handle the frustration of being on losers. Marbury is all about himself and the money. He seems to be the type of guy who doesn't care if his team is losing as long as everyone kisses his rear; he gets 90% of the shots, and does all the scoring. Don't even sacrifice a 4th rounder to bring this cancer on-board. Lastly, I'm not sure the Big 3 can transform personalities the way the Patriots locker room, full of dozens of leaders from the coaches to the players was able to work on Dillon. NO DANNY - YOU'RE REVERTING BACK TO BAD HABITS.

  1. In all reality this team CANNOT get worse no matter who they sign. They can get better. They have too much talent. All we know is that the celtics need a better bench. They are'nt activating Cassell until late in the season toward the playoffs. In the meantime we can use some depth. So get Marbury and put Eddie House at his NATURAL position at SG. Then we find a big man who brings intesityon Def. and Off. Its not really a big risk that we mite e taking. People need to CHILL OUT. They say every team whether it be MIN, PHO, NJN, and NY, he's ruined them and when he left they became much better teams without him. THE DIFFERENCE? This team is actually a great team that can afford to take a chance on this guy.

Posted by Nick January 2, 09 08:22 PM
  1. Like a few commenters stated, look what the Patriots did with those so called "cancers" and terrible teammates. The Celts need some depth! Marbury was a great player in this league. They would have to make it clear to him of what his role is and he has one shot , if he blows this opportunity, then he's gone. The Celtics have too many Vetrans on this team,KG; Ray; Pierce, to allow a player to come in and ruin team concept and team play. Just like Brady, Brusci, Vrabel, Harrison, etc did with Dillon & Moss. People keep saying they need a big man... Who are you going to get? They have enough Bigs that should be getting the job done. Rondo is the only player on the team that can bring the ball up the court. Has anyone noticed every lead the Celts give up is when Rondo is out of the game? Eddie House is awful! His shot selection is terrible & he can "NOT" dribble the ball up the court. They need a back up point guard more then anything else on this team! Powe and Big Baby need to step it up. Tony Allen continues to be a dissapointment. He shows great progress and then he looks lost out there. He plays out of control. Knee problems or not, he has under achieved. If not Marbury, Baron Davis wants out of LA. Salary cap might be an issue, but I would swap TA for him in a minute. Celts are going to be fine, but they do need to get bench help. They still have the best record in the league, but I think people are starting to realize how important James Posey was to this team.

  1. I appreciate comment #134 by Petey because I was thinking the same thing. DJ had a rough rap; and yet he became a Celtic legend.

Look, Marbury knows that Beantown would be a godsend for him; he wouldn't spit on that opportunity nor would the fans let him. He knows that he's gotta earn respect in Boston because the C's espouse the WE not ME mentality.

Ubuntu would overtake him because it has overtaken every Celtic player, who by the way continues to work through his own ego DAILY to become one.

Posted by imsointoyoudotcom January 2, 09 10:15 PM
  1. What everyone's overlooking is that it really makes no difference who the Celtics do or don't sign. In the end, hwo far the Celtics go will rest with Doc Rivers and his questionable coaching (ahem) skills. He gives a sure shooter like Eddie House too few minutes to be consistent, but lets a gunner like Tony Allen (has this guy ever played team ball?) go one on five every time he touches the ball, and plays him BIG MINUTES. Now that's a great message to send. Meanwhile, Doc keeps cutting the minutes of Leon Powe, the hardest working, most dependable guy on the team, especially in the paint, while letting KG just roam the perimeter and crank up 3-point shots (is anyone else sick of watching 7-footers play soft instead of doing the hard work inside? There's a reason Dirk Nowitski has never accomplished crap, and Doc is turning Garnett into Nowitski-East).
So, no, Marbury isn't the worst thing that can happen to the Celts. They already have Doc Rivers at the helm. Marbury is the second worst.

  1. As an OLD Celtics fan who watched Bob Cousy play, I vote NO on Marbury and the reason is that he does not appear to be a team player. It's great that we won the championship. The team we have now may or may not win another this year. We may have to cope with injuries as the Patriots did. I know my boys have to play as though winning is everything, although it isn't to me. All I ask is that they play TOGETHER, with head and heart and Celtic pride.

Posted by EZbskt January 3, 09 01:16 AM
  1. Hey, i got a different answer: 'yes'. Why not try it. There is nothing to lose, if he doesn't work out, just release him. I don't see the C's being fool enough to give him a 20 mil contract like the Knicks did and expect he will act like he has something to prove; you gotta make him earn his keep, the KG way. The Patriots did it with Corey Dillon and Randy Moss, and those were fabulous successes, why not try it. He'd be a great back up to Rando, and it'd might humble the bastard. Also, if any one believes that Marbury being on the team would some how ruin the team chemistry, you MUST be a fool. KG is not about to allow any loafing from anyone, just look to the blubbering Big Baby. There can be nothing bad to come of this and nothing to loose.

Likewise, the players (especially KG) know. If they accept Marbury, then he will get his chance. He will definitely be on probation.

Hey, this is pro basketball, not the YMCA. Marbury is a pro and they will let him know what is expected of him.

It's a risk/reward calculation. Marbury's stock is down. That's the time to buy!

  1. West Coast Celtics Fan,
I am not sure how many Celtics games you have watched this season, but KG has attempted (5) 3-Point shots. Has made (1) of those (5) and they were all to beat the shot clock. KG's game is 10-15 feet out and that has always been his game. He is basically an automatic 20-10 player every night. How many 4's in the league can guard him in that area? Lets keep him inside with Perk (who's game is limited to 4 feet around the bucket) and clog the paint. That's where Perk should be - not KG. As far as Doc Rivers is concerned, I do not always agree with his player rotation, but be serious... He won 66 games last year and an NBA Title! Getting KG, Pierce & Ray to accept their roles and change their game for a chance to win speaks volume. He also did it with a very average center (Perk) and a 2nd year point guard that no one other then the Celts ever gave a chance. Other then Posey, their bench was young & inexperienced (Not including their late season aquisitions of Cassell & Brown) and he got them (mainly Poe & Big Baby) to play great. As of today, the Celts are 29-5, the best record in basketball. If you don't like Doc, that's fine. But to say he is the worst part of the Celtics organazation, you need to wake up. I do definately agree with you on Tony Allen.

  1. #140 brings up some good points. I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought it was crazy to have a seven footer roaming the perimeter, like Garnett seems to do far too often.

  1. This guy is not a monster as many suggest--just another flawed human being like the rest of us. I say give him a chance and keep him on a short lease. There is too big of an upside to ignore--besides having someone strong who can bring the ball up the court we are freeing up Eddie House to just roam and shoot which is what he does best and is a pure joy to watch. Winning heals and Marbury will enjoy being on a winning team.

  1. There is not any situation where marbury has had success with a team, other than individual success. His teams have never won. He is an I-First Player who could never subjigate his talent for any team. He would be a distraction, and cost the C's games instead of help them over this brief downturn, which they will soon come out of.
