All-Star H-O-R-S-E added

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff February 3, 2009 01:14 PM

TNT today announced the addition of the shot-making game H-O-R-S-E to its programming lineup during its four days of NBA All-Star 2009 coverage from Feb. 12-15, in Phoenix. The H-O-R-S-E game will air live during TNT’s two-hour Inside the NBA from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Sat., Feb. 14.

Participants for the event have yet to be announced.

The addition of H-O-R-S-E to the All-Star festivities reminded us of this classic McDonald's commercial featuring Larry Bird and Michael Jordan having a shooting contest for a Big Mac. No word on whether either will come out of retirement to participate in the All-Star H-O-R-S-E exhibition.

  1. This is the greatest idea the NBA has had since the 3-point line. Well done.

Looks like Bill Simmons finally gets his wish.

  1. I hope they give the Sports Guy the credit he deserves for coming up with this.

They'll probably rip him off just like his own network did with the Mt. Rushmore show.

  1. What's next? Dizzy bat dunk contests? Hooking the net to a dunk tank and giving fans a chance to drown Charles Barkley? How about one of those arcade machines where the basket moves further away from you as the time counts down. And they wonder why the All Star Games in all sports have become events that most players try to avoid playing in. Stick to the basics!

  1. Cosmic Pinhead Bill Simmons, aka Gerry Callahan's coffee boy at the Herald,
didn't produce the Bird/Jordan commercial did he? Oh he didn't, that's right,
just like he doesn't live in Boston or know anything about Boston sports.

  1. Phil sounds jealous.

Simmons has been pimping this idea for 10 years, give him his due.

  1. How amazing would 1v1 or 3v3 competition be?

Kobe + Al Jefferson + Durant vs. Rose + Garnett + Lebron

  1. I don't think most basketball players will know Razz well enough to make this entertaining.

Go to Youtube and search under "Maravich Horse". Great old school stuff.

  1. Listen, I'm as big a Simmons fan as anybody, and he has written about a HORSE competition a bunch, but he didn't come up with the idea... that's insane.

Anyone who has played HORSE in their lifetime and cares about the All Star festivities has thought at point or another, "why not have a HORSE competition?"

There should also be a one v. one competition w/ divisions according to position, meaning Dwight Howard vs. Yao... Lebron v. Carmelo and Kobe vs. Wade. THAT would be incredible.

  1. dunking allowed ? wonder what the rules will be??
best NBA idea in a long time. (Simmons at least needs credit for this, if he doesn't land his dream-job as an NBA GM!)

  1. Wasn't there a version of this ad, maybe for the Super Bowl, where Larry and MJ call the shot off of Leslie Visser's head?

  1. Today on PTI, Wilbon had the audacity to say it was "his idea". Bill Simmons has been insufferable lately, but this is his baby.
