Celtics suspend Pruitt for 2 games

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff February 27, 2009 02:28 PM

The Celtics announced today that they have suspended guard Gabe Pruitt for two games for conduct detrimental to the team. Pruitt was arrested early Thursday morning in the Los Angeles area on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

"I recognize that my behavior was inappropriate and accept the consequences of my action as determined by the Celtics,” said Pruitt.

The 22-year-old Pruitt, a 6-foot-4 guard, is in his second year with the Celtics and is averaging 2.3 points in 8.8 minutes per game this season. The former USC Trojan has appeared in 36 games for the Celtics this season.

  1. Define Conduct Detrimental to the team. One he is not convicted yet of DUI. Two he did this on his own time. Three this is a personal issue. Four he needs to earn his money so he can pay his lawyer fees and likely fines. Suspending him for 2 games to me is a waste of time because he won't be playing as much now with Starburry on board. This sounds like conduct detrimental to Gabe not himself.

  1. Hey the kid is young and young kids screw up, he should not have been out that late but hey LA is where he is from. I would not have done anything except a serious tongue lashing. He seems like a great kid, especially how he quickly came out and admitted to his wrong doings. Good luck Greg.

  1. I'm just glad that didn't cut him. That could have been the result of this.

  1. Jack, Gabe admitted to driving under the influence, so the Celtics had every right to suspend him, even though he has not been convicted yet of a DUI. Even though he luckily hurt no one during his excrusion and that it was "on his own time," his behavior was detrimental to the Celtics team and he could have killed himself or another human being. This is a perfectly acceptable punishment, and a necessary one to give Gabe the message that just because he's an NBA player doesn't mean that he can engage in reckless, dangerous behavior.

  1. 6. Pruitt has to realize his job is 24 hours a day. He has certain obligations to uphold and look up to, and when he does something that is obviously stupid, like not use a taxi when you make great money, well, someone has to educate him, or at least try. This guy can apologize all he wants but he's got a long way to go now before people trust him, or consider him mature enough to handle his job. Gee I guess we should be happy they didn't find drugs and firearms.

  1. Somehow these guys don't grasp what a huge privilage they have & then they go out & do this junk. Too many have wasted their talent on the bottle & it would be a crying shame for Gabe to end up as Vin Baker II so hopefully he'll learn that he has life on a silver platter. How many of his former D League team mates would give anything to be in the NBA.
