Marbury bought out; source says he will join Celtics

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff February 24, 2009 10:45 PM

LOS ANGELES — Not long after getting Mikki Moore signed today, the Celtics were able to begin envisioning what Stephon Marbury would look like in their uniform, too.

After several months of being embroiled in a soap opera, the Knicks worked out a buyout of Marbury’s $21 million contract today. Two NBA sources said that once the two-time All-Star clears waivers — which is expected to be Friday morning — he will sign with the Celtics for a prorated $1.3 million minimum contract for the rest of the season.

The Celtics also filled their need for a veteran big man by signing Moore for the rest of the season to undisclosed financial terms.

‘‘I’m blessed to be able to move on with my career,’’ said Marbury via e-mail. ‘‘I’m excited about the new beginning.’’

Marbury and the Knicks also resolved the grievance he had filed against the team over the $400,000 he had been docked for allegedly refusing to play in a game in November. The sides attended an arbitration hearing today, and terms of the settlement were not announced.

Marbury, 32, averaged 13.9 points and 4.7 assists in 24 games for the Knicks last season, but he hasn’t played in a regular-season game since Jan. 11, 2008. He needed surgery for bone spurs that ended his 2007-08 season, and with the arrival of president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D’Antoni during the offseason, the Knicks wanted to move on from the Marbury era and start fresh.

The Celtics became intrigued with Marbury in the preseason when he averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 assists and went to the line regularly in seven games. He scored 16 points against Boston in an Oct. 21 game, but last played in a preseason game against New Jersey on Oct. 24. He was suspended by the Knicks shortly thereafter.

The Celtics declined comment on Marbury, but team president Danny Ainge did say he planned on signing a combo-guard or wing player for his final open roster spot. Marbury played with Celtics All-Star forward Kevin Garnett in Minnesota.

‘‘We’re looking to get a guard,’’ Ainge said prior to the announcement of Marbury’s buyout. ‘‘There is no one that we are checking on right now. But we can turn our attention to that now.’’

In Boston, the 6-foot-2-inch Marbury would be expected to come off the bench, joining Eddie House as the reserve backcourt. He likely would defend the bigger guards and do most of the ball-handling to lessen the pressure on House. If he signs Friday, he could be in uniform against Indiana that night.

In the 33-year-old Moore, the Celtics landed the veteran big man with length they sorely needed. The 7-foot, 225-pounder cleared waivers in the morning and joined the Celtics in Los Angeles today. He had dinner with coach Doc Rivers and is expected to play against the Clippers.

‘‘The timing couldn’t be better,’’ Rivers said. ‘‘We have Scal [Brian Scalabrine] and Kevin out.’’
Moore, who was waived by Sacramento last Thursday, averaged 3.5 points and 3 rebounds in 16.2 minutes in 46 games this season. He played in three games for the Celtics on a 10-day contract in the 2002-03 season.

Moore will wear No. 7 with the Celtics.

‘‘He just provides some energy, some length,’’ Ainge said. ‘‘He has really good hands. He’s played well in the playoffs in the past, even if it’s just 15 games.

‘‘He was very excited to come to Boston. He was recruited by every contending playoff team. He really wanted to come.’’

Scalabrine, meanwhile, will miss tomorrow night’s game, as he was sent back to Boston to be examined for a cervical strain he suffered during Monday’s victory at Denver.

  1. Hmmmmm...: ) Just like K.G. would say, "what can you say now?" what...can...you...say...now? Marbury is out and ready to ball; the Boston Celtics are ready for the call!!! Who can stop us now? Sources also said the Celtics Knew all along what the fate was...:):):):):)
Am all smiles now and ready for another fun playoff run.

    ANYTHING IS POSSIBLEEEEE!!!!!!

  1. Who Better to fill the last spot than Not Marbury but Antoine Walker. Pierce loves playing with him, he helped the Heat win a title, he can dribble pass and post up.

  1. How can we ever look in the mirror? If we complain so bitterly about Manny shooting his way out of town, and then complain about the Dodgers taking him in? I'd love to see another Celtic banner but not with Marbury!!

  1. NO! Marbury is like an uncleaned wound. He'll come here, seem okay for a while, and soon he'll start infecting the team. I DON'T want this malcontent wearing our beautiful green jerseys. I agree with rad. Bring in Walker!

  1. Not starbury.All he cares about is starbury.Why don't we give P.J. a call?
Maybe Pierce & K.G can keep him in line.I pray he doesn't ruin the chemistry the big 3 and the role players have going on.
He scares the %*$@( out of me.See M. RAMIREZ.

  1. Bring him on. He can only help. I think the media blew everything out of proportion as they always do. Obviously he's not the most unselfish person, but when you have a great coach, and three starters that are also great coaches, I think he'll fit in just fine. Bring on another championship. The Sox will bring theirs home as well. If Brady comes back full bore, then it looks like yet another great year for Boston sports.

  1. Stephon is a proven scorer and great ball-player. My only concerns are everyone elses-attitude, Attitude and atTitude.However...do you guys really think experienced vets like Ray Allen, KG, Paul Pierce etc and a smart and assertive coach like Doc would let Marbury pull his $hit here? No-Do you guys remember a similar situation that happened with a little dynasty called the Chicago Bulls...? I think the guys name was Dennis Rodman..? I think that one worked out pretty well, and Rodman was TWICE the psycho that Star is. I don't want to jump the gun-no deal is done obviously, but anyone who doesn't agree that a proven scorer added to the bench of the Celts would springboard us to the title again is pessimistic to say the least...

  1. A good signing if it happens. We have enough veteran leadership to keep him in check, and individuals have been known to undergo metamorphosis when given a shot at a ring (see Moss, Dillon, even Pierce to a degree). At a minimum it gives Rondo some rest and keeps him fresh for a long playoff run, and provides some additional scoring punch to the 2nd unit.

  1. This guy is going to arrive in Boston, claim he is king and drive the Celtics back into the boondocks. He couldn't spell "team" if you spotted him three letters.

Posted by Bill February 24, 09 07:37 PM
  1. No, absolutely not. Marbury is a punk. He is trouble and NOT a team player. With the success and team cohesion the Celtics have had the last 3 seasons, I can't believe they are considering this move.

Posted by Marburyisbadnews February 24, 09 07:37 PM
  1. Personally, I think Knicks management is stupid! Why on earth buying out his contract when they could have got rid of his huge contract through a deal that could have brought Stoudamire or any other great player to Knicks! No! Instead they buy out his contract like total fools! This is why Knicks are the Knicks.....We will definitely gain from this deal having signed hyperactive Mikki Moore and now hopefully Marbury! This will be the first sign of how to cure a cancer!

  1. The vets will make sure he stays in line. It's just too bad that a guy that is a perpetual team cancer gets a shot at a title. Oh well, it happens all the time. Sometimes it works (Corey Dillon) and sometimes it doesn't (Randy Moss).

  1. Hey, getting rid of two players (cassell and patrick) who never played, for two players who can really help, is great! Makes us deeper, and decreases some of the minutes for the big three, keeps them healthier! If he's a cancer, he will be dropped, cassell wasnt giving us anything. Lets give it a shot, go C's!

  1. He may be a punk but with the Big Three policing him; I feel good about banner 18.
Isiah Thomas is the real culprit in the Marbury deal, anyway...Great guy off the bench who already understands what his role will be.

  1. Anybody else think we don't need another point guard? We brought in Sam last year and he ended up not playing much in the postseason anyway. This is only going to lead to a regression by Pruitt who was starting to improve because now he probably won't get off the bench. What we need is help on the wing. Tony Allen is the only serviceable player off the bench right now and he's always hurt. We need somebody to take Posey's role for this years team because we can't ask Pierce to defend Lebron and Kobe for 48 mins/game in the playoffs.

I feel like Danny Ainge is just bringing in the best individual player he could find instead of filling a missing void. Who knows, maybe there wasn't a wing player available to try to work out a trade for, but just because Marbury's available and we have a roster spot doesn't mean he should be signed.

  1. marbury has more to prove now than ever. he knows this is not a long term fit with the c's. this is his chance to show the rest of the league he can still play and is worthy of a contract. he hasn't played in a game in over a full year....and has to be hungry. kg, pierce, ray ray, and doc will keep him in line. he also knows this is as good of chance as ever to win a ring. great work danny ainge! bring on #18!

Posted by hogandp February 24, 09 07:50 PM
  1. It's Manny Ramirez, dude. Marbury should fit nicely as long as he can learn how to be a role player and not play as if he were their francise player . Trading for Nocioni would have given them a sick bench considering the signings of Moore and now Marbury. Imma a die hard Laker fan, but I must admit , the celts are looking a little scary right now. I hope we can still pull through.

Posted by Ron February 24, 09 07:51 PM
  1. all that I have to say is I thought we did the stupidest thing in the world when I heard we had a trade for nocioni that we didn't take, and then we went and redeemed ourselves with STARBURY!!! haha we are back in this $#|T hell yeah.

  1. I'll give Marbury a shot. I really think that KG can keep him in line. Employee #8 would be a disaster returning to Boston. His 3 pt shooting was always the downfall of the Celtics. Every one of his misses turned into a lost chance, i.e. a turnover.

Posted by hdsnake February 24, 09 07:52 PM
  1. I can't say I am a big Marbury fan... he has proven to be a big-headed P.U.N.K. in the past...*HOWEVER*...the Cs need help bad and he'll make us better. My guess is the communication from the Cs was pretty clear: No BS.
And that's what we gotta hope for...

  1. Is everyone serious? These are grown adults not 10 year olds. They are business men as well as basketball players. The guy was about to make millions and millions of dollars that the knicks agreed to pay him if he was on the team. That is enough to make sure generations of your family are all set. He is not an idiot, he knows what he is doing and I am pretty sure Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett know exactly what they are doing too. Since the beginning of last year it has always been about basketball and bringing on Stephon isn't going to change anything. Lets face it, Cleveland and Orlando are legit this year. We need this and it is going to help.

  1. Look, the Celtics are not going to get locked up with anything past this season with Marbury. At worst, Marbury enters a game and completely blows his opportunity, then heads to the locker room and toilet papers the place.. But then Doc and Danny will put him out to pasture. Marbury can't single-handedly take the team down. Ultimately, the Celtics don't need him to play minutes. But if Rondo goes down, he's there. At best, Marbury is level-headed and plays his backup minutes when necessary. He's definitely no worse than Cassell who put up a shot every time he touched the ball in the playoffs, whether or not he knew which hoop to shoot at. Marbury also adds a little drama and entertainment at a lull in the season for fans.

  1. I loooove it! Marbury hasn't been a very good NBA citizen, 'tis true. But I don't think he's a total imbecile, and this is his last best chance for a ring -- and a shot at ending his career on a high note.

This is the best I've felt about Boston's chances for an 18th banner since the Christmas day loss to LA.

  1. In case no one knows, Marbury and KG have been best friends since they were kids. He's not a threat to the locker room. The knicks decided that Marbury wasn't woth anything to them. If some one said that to me, I would be pissed off too. Look at his resume of charities and friendships. He is exactly what we need at this point; Talent, experience, and personality.

  1. First let me say living in California and rooting for the Celtics - you have to keep it moving - or you may get hurt!!!!!!!!!!!! I became a Celt-fan because of K.G. Been watching him since '98 and have not missed any of his games yet. In case you didn't know Marbury is for Marbury ONLY! That statement he made about it being good for the league anf fans seeing him and K.G. back together - RIGHT!!! His BIG HEAD should have thought about that before he left the Wolves - pissed cause Kevin made more money and the team was viewed as K.G.'s. He will spend his time trying to outdo Rondo and if he by chance hits a winning shot - have you seen the head in Mission G?? Plez check it out and do the same to him!!!

Posted by RED February 24, 09 08:12 PM
  1. Does the 15 players include Walker/Giddens? If so, can the C's then sign other players with only having to demote Walker/Giddens? If not, then does it mean that we won't see Walker/Giddens for the rest of they season?

Posted by Josh February 24, 09 08:13 PM
  1. Agree with Mike. The Celtics' locker room is strong enough to keep Marbury in line and management won't be afraid to kick him to the curb if he causes trouble. Let's give him a chance, folks.

Posted by Jay February 24, 09 08:13 PM
  1. If marburry comes to Boston it will put much stress on the chemistry of this team, which will expose Doc for the poor coach that he is...This team is led and has been led by the veterans on the bench and on the floor, and marburry will be a true cancer that will have us losing in round 1 with everyone pointing fingers at Doc and Ainge asking what happened. Ainge will not sign him...

Posted by Stef February 24, 09 08:13 PM
  1. KG has endorsed the move...I say bring him on! The C's have of late have mirrored the Pat's "team" approach (remember all those who questioned the Dillon and Moss signings/trades?) Marbury was in a bad situation with a dysfunctional Knicks team and I think he wants a chance to prove his naysayers wrong. Welcome to titletown Marbury!

  1. How can we say this YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Posted by tim February 24, 09 08:18 PM
  1. It'd be a nice pickup for the Cs. Remember you are getting him for dirt cheap and he's filling the 15th roster spot. In Boston he would have to accept being a backup. If he doesn't go for it, the Cs cut him loose. If he does fit in, then its a tremendous pickup by DA.

He certainly is capable of playing significant minutes when needed, and gives punch to a second unit that lacks a scorer. Say what you want about Starbury, but he makes a strong backup to Rondo at the point.

Posted by Brian February 24, 09 08:18 PM
  1. First of all, have you seen Antoine Walker this year? He's Vince Wilfork. Picture Marbury as a new kind of coffee being promoted at Dunkin Donuts; He's cheap enough so that if he acts up, you don't really feel bad about throwing him in the garbage. Besides, Marbury is going to come to Boston like Ike Turner trying to win Tina back, and for a mere three months, he can hold it together since any chance of Marbury getting anything close to a decent contract next year hinges on how he performs here in Boston. And even Marbury has to realize that.

Posted by MaydayMalone February 24, 09 08:19 PM
  1. If Marbury were going to a young, relatively inexperienced team he could definitely nuke it but the Celtics have three Hall of Fame caliber players who are also leaders and a no nonsense coach. If he keeps his mouth shut and contributes the Celts are a better team. If he brings his New York act to Boston the adults on the team will help him pack. I don't see the downside here.

Posted by John February 24, 09 08:20 PM
  1. Anyone who has been around long enough to remember the real Garden should remember be thinking deja vu. The Celtics once brought in a has been malcontent point guard named Dennis Johnson and that worked out pretty well. No worries here. Kobewearsapurplethong is right, not an issue.

and within team concept as he is looking for a contract next year.

  1. Exactly Mike-here's a quote from Ray Allen today: "The great thing about this locker room is that Doc [Rivers] can coach," Allen said. "The coaches can coach. They don't have to manage this team. The [veteran] players do a great job making sure that we are all prepared to play every day and we keep whatever grumblings down." OK...Shhh..Do you guys hear that..? It's the rest of the leagues' knees knocking together...

MJ and PJ were the ones who kept Rodman in check, nobody else.
The C's don't have either, or anything close to an equivalent.

Do you really think that he is going to respect Doc Rivers??

  1. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not willing to reward a guy that has been nothing short of flat out selfish during his tenure as an NBA player. There is a reason Steph has NEVER won an NBA playoff round. For him to pout like a baby all season after making $24 Million during these tough economic times, only to jump on the bandwagon of the hardest working team in the league for a month and be rewarded with a championship is unacceptable. Bottom line, I would rather go to battle and lose without Steph, then win with him!!!!!!!!

Posted by rb February 24, 09 08:28 PM

Posted by Will February 24, 09 08:30 PM
  1. This is great, they are gonna be tough to beat now. He can play the 1 and 2 spots. We can actually have Pierce and Allen on the bench at the same time now. We never have those two out at the same time, now with a good scorer like Stephon the big three can all be on the bench at the same time resting.

Posted by frank February 24, 09 08:39 PM
  1. The only minutes he could come up with are Rondo's. I agree that the Big Three and probably handle anything he shells out, but I'm not sure the same can be said for Rondo. I would really hate to screw up the chemistry they have created for whatever little this punk could bring to the table. I think there is more to loss than to gain in this move!!!

we don't need the backcourt help,we needed it up front where the big boys play.

  1. All I can say is he is worth the risk. Look at Dennis Rodman in Chicago and Rasheed Wallace in Detroit. Both came with poisonous reputation and they behaved enough to win win it all. I have a feeling Marbury will work out for the Celtics.

It would be sweet to Celts winning the title at the Staple Center!

    Posted by m8p February 24, 09 08:41 PM
  1. I just don't see the downside in this one. If he pulls any antics there are too many to tell him to cut it out or leave, it's not like the Celts can't win without him! I honestly believe this will turn out the same way Moss did with him proving he can play and be a good team mate! I will really enjoy watching him play with all the others and I honestly think he will help us win another, back to back baby!

I was worried about Boston, but once Starbury infects the Celts like every other team he has in the past, this just makes it that much easier for LeBron, Mo and Company to roll right past you. I give it 15 games before you are infected beyond repair. Go Green.

Look, with the Cavs and Lakers having improved so much over last year, we need all the help we can get. Less you forget, LA have swep the regular searson series! Wakeup, there won't be P.J. coming back this year! If K.G. ok it, why not?!

First and foremost , I could only wish Stephon could produce for the celtics half of what many did for the boston red sox and the city of boston, Manny Ramirez is the best hitting red sox ever, and before he joyned the red sox we had no hope of winning the world series and it was taboo for any minority (LEGIT) major leage ball player to come to Boston! Manny maid it cool to come to Boston ,Remember when David Ortiz came to Boston ( he said) if it wasn;t for that phone call from Manny he wouldn't be here. To be such a cancer in the club house Manny gave us a all star performance each and every year he was here , several world championship banners and almost closed the door on the belief that bost as a hole is racist

    2. He needs to prove his worth of a long term contract (with another team, hello Clippers or Warriors)
    3. If he f---s up, he is gone.
    4. The Celtics can win without him. With him engaged, man, their second unit looks good.
    5. More rest for PP and RA in the second quarter and fourth quarter of many games where the celts lead by 10-15 points.
    6. Another chance to win it all.

So let me get this straight..since Marbury was a punk a few times he won't want to win an NBA championship..? I don't think so. And hog you brainless twit, it was actually Pippen, MJ and Ron Harper that quelled the Rodman beast-Jackson stayed out of it. Marbury and KG are both much older now and all that crap is water under the bridge. Marbury has never been agressive anyway-he's more of an introvert. Do your homework next time before running your crap-flapper. Every NBA player plays for one thing-to be the best.

He will be fine, and if he is not, he will be gone.......with the wind. He will be playing for a contract, and I say he will be fine with House, Powe and Moore, we are at least 9 deep. If he performs, this will be the move everyone remembers as putting us over the top. At least DA did something. Is this team better than the one that lost to the Lakers this year? I'm pretty sure there are teams out there that don't want to see the Celtics acquire him.I'm 99% sure that one of those teams would be the Lakers another might be the Heat.I'm not sure how waivers works in the NBA,in the NFL if a player is placed on waivers any team can claim him and if they do so they hold his rights until they choose to release him.

That worked wonders didn't it? Starburry is Manny without any rings! He certainly isn't Rodman or Wallace. Those guys were always team first players on the court. Has anyone ever said that about Starbury. Anyone old enough to remember the pre-Bird years knows Starbbury is another Marvin Barnes.

He has been an embarrassment to every organization for which he has played, and the Celts front office should be ashamed of itself for even thinking about taking on a guy with his character. He is a sociopath, and he has serious delusions of his own self-importance. He recently said that "it would be great for the fans of the NBA to see me and [KG] back together"; does Steph really think that is what this is about? I want to win but let's have some self-respect and standards. What a joke...

  1. Offensively, Marbury is likely to be a huge addition. He has, in one package, what both Rondo and House have individually. Rondo can score off the dribble, but he can't shoot the j. House can shoot the j, but he can't create off the dribble. The question is will Marbury defend? He can, but will he? If he does, the Cs will have made a fantastic acquisition.

I wouldn't overly worry about Marbury's 'tude, there are three All Stars and Doc there who will keep that in check.

Now his number is hanging in the rafters and this year he is (long over-due) getting elected to the basketball HOF. Anyone remember this guy??? ..... it was "D.J.", Dennis Johnson!

I think Marbury is a minimal risk and one that is def worth taking. He can back-up Rondo, play the 2 and even fill in for PP. He played small forward during preseason.

That would make the Knicks VERY happy as owner Dolan is actually paying $42 million on account of Marbury as it stands now ($21 million to Marbury, $21 million to the league via dollar for dollar luxury tax).

Isn't that why nobody claimed Manny a few years back after the Red Sox put him on waivers....the fact that they'd have to assume all the obligations of his contract?

  1. Murbury is a true point guard that can really help the Celtics in the playoffs. He gives the them dept and experience which they are lacking on the bench at that position. He now has the opportunity to redeem himself as a player and prove a lot of doubters wrong. I'm a big Celtics fan and I'm very excited to hear that the Celtics maybe closing in on signing him, this would be a big bonus for the team adding Marbury on as a backup point guard. If things do not work out they can let him go, but I beleive that the guy has something that he wants to prove, so there's a lot of incentives for Marbury to come hear and play hard and fit in with the team. So Let's give the guy a chance and welcome him to Boston.

If they sign Marbury, you're going to have to live with it and if you ask me, we are pretty lucky to be seeing such great basketball after 15 years of garbage. Just enjoy it, stop being hateful, resentful and jealous of someone you see as an "ungrateful punk". I think the people who are talking bad about Marbury in this forum are just as guilty themselves of being jerks as they say he is. Just because Marbury annoys you, you don’t want the Celtics to sign him but really, this is about what you like and not what is good for the Celtics. The team is all about collective success and strength in numbers which Moore and Marbury will add.

  1. I'm hesitant to endorse what the C's have done, but at least they got Marbury on their terms (for short money), so if he steps out of line, he knows he's gone. I assume Danny wants him to show the league he can be a team player and still has all his skills so that he can get the big contract in 2010. With that kind of motivation, Marbury will re-invent himself and be a model citizen.

  1. OPK3...I reported it-he's not too bright saying stuff like that-they can easily track him via his I.P. address. The comment was removed and hopefully they are taking further action as well....

  1. We don't need Marbury. He hasn't shown anything that says he's ready to run with a top-tier team physically, or mentally.

I know KG would keep him in check, but I don't want my all star wasting his time babysitting a ball diva who's head is bigger than his game.

  1. I'm glad to see so much discussion on this. It's really a coin flip whether or not Marbury is going to help us win #18. Personally speaking I was very much against getting him in the beginning and am still somewhat skeptical right now (although I've opened up a bit to the idea now with this report). At the least Ainge has set the ground rules where Marbury is making the veteran's minimum and it's understood what role he'll be in. If he can stay in line and make use of the talent he obviously has without the drama then everyone will be better for it. Lets hope we see turn here!

Looks like the Holywood Fakers, 2009 Champions
Look for the Crack to be sitting at the end of the benck with a green towel over his dome wearing some starbury skips that read "#3 (or#8) ALONE"
I'm telling ya boys,...This guy is bad news,!!!

  1. Marbury = Fools gold for a low class mercenary team.
Celts= No identity . Soon to be permanently washed up over the hill
with all the youth gone. Perpetual Lottery team from 2010-2021

Sold your soul one last time.
Enjoy cancerbury Lets see if the big 3 weenies can do what 6 HOF coaches couldn't LOL !

PS- Starbury's skull = empty coconut
    when he got that red-dick-ulous

  1. DI$CO, I agree-I've not seen this much commenting in a long time-it's great. I think that with the veteran leadership here, Marbury will be ok. But we have NOTHING to lose! We don't need him. If he acts up or just simply doesn't perform, buh-bye. Thanks for the newsflash Dollar Bill-I had no idea Marbury was bad new. You are truly brilliant-maybe ESPN.com needs writers. You should look into it. You know who else was "bad news..?" Rodman, Moss, Dillon...We already know this. Just curious, what team do you root for..? Whoever is winning..?

  1. I wish PJ would come out of retirement but he won't. I can only hope and pray that Danny knows what he is doing. How does tommy feel about this??? Isn't there a history with KG??? Not a very good one either, right?
Cancer doesn't have a cure yet, so let's hope Marbury isn't a new strain,! We need this to be positive I still believe in my C's
