The Celtics and Kings agreed to a deal in principle late Monday on a trade that would send Sam Cassell and cash to Sacramento for a future second-round draft pick and cash, ESPN.com reported (citing a league source).

Another league source told ESPN.com that this trade, which helps the Celtics by freeing up a roster spot and removing Cassell’s salary from luxury tax computations, could pave the way for Boston to make a deal before Thursday’s trade deadline.

The Cassell deal could be finalized by this afternoon, according to ESPN.com.

Cassell has not suited up for the Celtics this season, but is a constant presence on the bench.
