Tony Allen to have thumb surgery

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff February 17, 2009 04:05 PM

Celtics president Danny Ainge said that guard Tony Allen is slated to have left thumb surgery Wednesday and he is hopeful he will be ready to return for the playoffs. The injury-plagued Allen suffered the injury Feb. 8 against San Antonio; he had already missed 15 games this season to ankle and thumb injuries. Allen is averaging 7.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 19.1 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 213-pounder's injury opens the door for more playing time for guard Gabe Pruitt.

"I hope [Allen's] ready for the playoffs," Ainge said.

  1. No way we make the playoffs without him. Thanks for ruining the season for us!

  1. And the hits just keep coming! Now we may want to think about some scoring off the bench. Marbury comes to mind, but no WAY Donnie Walsh is going to do anything to help out the Celtics.

  1. Danny Ainge must have been taking online courses @ Steve Kerr's School for G.M's over the Summer!!!!!!
    ----------------------------------

The same day he announces the chances of Tony Allen's thumb being ready for the playoffs are nothing more than a gamble, he trades away the one veteran guard who can actually give you some help in the playoffs?????????????
    huh?

All during a time when pretty much when nobody of any real quality is available!!!!!!!

-And the one team he DID do a trade with was the ONLY team in the whole league who had exactly what the C's needed(Miller & Salmons). Yet, it was the Kings who ended up with exactly what THEY wanted...$$$.

    THAT"S the funny part!!!!!!!!

    HAHAHAHA

  1. Addition by subtraction - make a minor trade and play Walker.

  1. Please don't let Danny deceive us (celts fans) in thinking that Pruitt is ready for playoff pressure. NOWAY!!!

  1. Thank God Tony was signed for only 1 year .... it is time for the Tony Allen era to end (it never really got started anyway).

  1. That's a blow to the Celtics' bench. TA's been so good for them this season when he's been healthy.

Frank is one of the few bloggers on here with any sense!!!!!
The Celtics made a huge mistake by picking Eddie over James and everybody knows it.

  1. Jackie (Post #1)...You mixed up Tony Allen with Ray Allen... Not making playoffs because the loss of Tony Allen?? A bit hilarious don't you think??

  1. Thank God.... He is terrible....

  1. Did I miss something in the playoffs last year? TA can't dribble and Casell was a black hole. It was like watching Bledsoe come in for Brady against the Steelers. I cringed when he had the ball. This team is in good shape, but they need a big. Pierce and Allen can bring the ball up the court just like last year.

    HOG, have a drink!!!

  1. Question: what caused the injury--an avoidable accident like the hot-dog knee destruction or just-one-of-those-things? If the former, perhaps Tony should go, lacking the discipline to be a reliable contributor. If the latter, the comments criticizing TA and/or Ainge are misguided.

  1. Yaz has the best comment by far. And Jackie Ryan..I thought since the C's traded Al Jefferson you gave up anyways..? Fairweather fans: You may want to just pull your pink Red Sox hats out and leave the Celtics alone for now-things get real after the All-Star break.

Posted by KobeWearsAPurpleThong February 17, 09 10:19 PM
  1. Hey Yaz,
It would be YOU'RE an idiot :) I'm all for Pruitt and Walker getting more time but we need one more vet. We'll do something guys...don't worry.

Posted by FLCeltsFan February 17, 09 11:02 PM
  1. They do now need one more quality player for the rotation. Walker reminds me of TA with his explosive moves to the hoop. C's do need another player, no doubt!

Posted by Bill February 18, 09 12:00 AM
  1. frank is the smartest man to comment...until now. posey should definately been signed. the c's wasted a vet minimum on cassell and could have traded the rights to one or both rookies in order to re-sign posey. he was indeed the single most important player to the championship team. hes not the most popular, hes not the best, he was just the most important. if we cant get the clippers to bite on Tony Allen, Scals and Walker for Camby (check it out on trade simulators, it works), we should send the three to new orleans and try to get posey back. defense and selflessness can not be substituted for...

  1. Yaz, YOU'RE an idiot...learn how to spell.

  1. I wonder if the C's could get Ryan Gomes back, I doubt it, but it would be nice.

Posted by steven February 18, 09 11:02 AM
  1. The C's will be scraping the waiver wire AGAIN this year because Danny Ainge is too incompetent to make a trade that improves the Celtics roster. Unlike Mitch, who is looking pretty damn smart today.

The brilliant trade that Mitch pulled of to get A-Mo and Sha-Brizzy was nothing short of genius. For those who witnessed their debuts last night; How did you like them apples??????

Meanwhile, playing against Orlando last night, Vladdy personally screwed his new team over by bobbling two late inbounds pass plays, costing the Bobcats a game they should have won.
    --------------------------------------
Even when Mitch makes a trade that is purely financial, it turns out to be a great move talent wise. It's almost not fair to the other teams in the League, but I'm not complaining.

    HAHAHA

  1. Steven A. Smith has stated recently that the Celts absolutely did talk to Marbury and they definitely have an agreement in place in case he is released. So brace yourselves, Celts bandwagon fans...

  1. I agree with the others who said that James Posey should have been resigned.

Posted by susan February 18, 09 01:10 PM
  1. Ah Corey? Only a fool would make that trade. And Camby would START anyway. We need bench help. I disagree with most of you. Posey was NOT the biggest loss. PJ Brown was. You can never have too many big players with skill. Posey was fine, but he can be replaeced. Right now, they need someone to cover Z from Cleveland, and Bynum and Gasol from THEM GUYS. Apparently, minutes will have to go up for the starters in the playoffs, and what is so bad about that, anyway. KG will NEVER foul out of a playoff game, and I believe we are pretty good with the starters in the game. BTW Corey, it's DEFINITELY

    Posted by opk3 February 18, 09 05:09 PM
  1. YOU'RE all idiots lol

seriously tho, House has been on fire as of late and Posey really hasn't done anything in New Orleans so I really don't even know why this is being mentioned. Billy Walker is going to get some minutes, so will Gabe, and we'll be good. If not, Starbury is on his way here.

Posted by MikeMartin February 18, 09 07:52 PM
  1. Tony is a definite help for the playoffs, might I remind everyone that he was the only player to defend Kobe and keep him scoreless for an entire quarter? A great defensive player off the bench, and his other stats are good too. This will hurt the C's, hopefully he can recover quickly. Keep your head up Tony, you'll get to play a full year soon!

  1. Allen sucks. Period. He's out of control, can't shoot, and is overrated as a defender. He's only good for putting his head down and driving to the hoop, which I assume any number of players in this league can do.

Posted by Classless February 19, 09 03:05 PM
  1. So does anyone have any answer for the fact that Posey has been a disappointment this year with New Orleans?
