Rondo, Davis out for Miami game, probably longer

Posted by Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff March 9, 2009 02:07 PM

Point guard Rajon Rondo will miss the Celtics' visit to Miami Wednesday and could also be out for Friday's game against Memphis.

Rondo, injured during the first quarter of a 105-94 win over Cleveland Friday, trained briefly Monday with his sprained right ankle taped. He continued to play in the game and finished with 10 assists, but sat out yesterday against the Magic.

Forward Glen Davis (right ankle sprain) attended practice, his lower right leg in a stabilizing boot. The second-year forward sprained his ankle as he was called for his fifth foul during Sunday's 86-79 loss to Orlando, a charge against the defending of Marcin Gortat 5:35 into the second half.

"We'll probably be down to 10 for probably this whole week," coach Doc Rivers said. "[Davis] and Rondo are out and will be out for probably the next couple games, maybe the next week.

"I actually made the comment [after Sunday's game] that Rondo would be ready for Wednesday, I think we were wrong."

  1. Is it just me, or is there a disturbing pattern developing here???

It seems to me like Doc has a dirty little habit of rushing his players back early???

    -The Scal 'Concussion" debacle.
    -The pre-mature KG invitations.
-Now, Rondo AND Big Baby are having to pull those ace bandages tighter.

Doc is no doc. He shouldn't even try to play one.
    ---------------------------------------------

Who on you team has the ball$ to stand up to this guy and tell him he is wrong???

    WHO??????????
    ---------------------------------------------

That's why YOU are the Celtics and WE are the Lakers!!!!!!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

  1. I was at the game yesterday (Sunday) against the Magic. If other NBA coaches and analysts are/were still doubting that Rajon Rondo is for real, just look at how much his absence hurt the Celtics. Ray Allen scored 32 points, Paul Pierce had 16 pounts and 8 rebounds, and Leon Powe had 12 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, but that wasn't enough. They were already already missing Kevin Garnett and Brian Scalabrine. Now Rondo, AND Glen "Big Baby" Davis, for who knows how long.

  1. How serious is Garnett's knee injury? I feel like the celts are keeping extra quiet bc season ticket holders have to buy there playoff packages in the next week or so and it is worse than what they are telling us.....

  1. canibus, why not get the mouse out of your pocket because you're as much a laker as I am a Celtic.

  1. The Lakers are still not gonna win the championship.............that's why the canibus hog has to post stupid comments. We're the Celtics b-cuz we won the championship and you're the Lakers b-cuz you lost the championship........now you're hoping all our players stay injured so you might have a chance this year........lol ...........softies

  1. Hey HOG, have you noticed WE are the defending champs and YOU are the runner ups. I would hold onto your novice medical degree and just sit back and relax. Doc knows a whole lot more about MY team than you do! That is unless you're attending ALL the games AND the practices. I'm sure you've probably spoken with Scal and KG, Tony and Big Baby on a daily basis like Doc does, and I'm sure they told you how angry they were about Doc rushing them back. Hey buddy, do us ALL a favor and just sit back and watch MY team DESTROY yours once again--assuming your team can make it back to the Finals.

  1. hey HOG does celtics in 6 ring a bell? game 6 was the biggest blowout in a deciding game in the HISTORY of the NBA! Does Boston 9-2 vs Lakers in the NBA finals ring a bell? What about the game 4 comeback last year? Hope you were there.

  1. Don't rush - anyone who has followed this team at all knows that Danny and Doc never rush players back. Doc has said all along that he'd rather be the 7 seed and 100% healthy, than the 1 seed and be injured.
Not really sure what that has to do with being a doctor
    or standing up to him
    or being the Lakers

but then again, I don't get a lot of things - like how many HA's it takes before someone will pay attention to me? Must be 6 or 7!

  1. Good Night Boston. Better luck next year!

  1. Uh hello...why would anyone even think that play/no play decisions based on injuries are decided solely by the coach...this is big business

Posted by doug March 9, 09 03:33 PM
  1. The C's will be fine. All teams deal with injuries. We beat Cleveland without KG and almost came back against the Magic from 22 down .

I'm not saying the C's will win it all again, but to anyone that doesn't think this team will be fine come playoff time is just wrong. I would rather my players have injuries early that keep them out for 5-10 games instead of having injuries late in the season or during the playoffs.

Oh... and Hog, the Lakers can't win a title even with home court advantage because only celebrities attend those games and they sit on their hands. I've never heard a quieter arena than Staples during the NBA Finals... Detroit was louder than y'all in the Palace during the Eastern Conference Finals. Hater Hog.

  1. this stuff didn't happen last year. The injuries are piling up. They may not be season ending injuries, but even nagging injuries take their toll. I've been watching sports for too many years, perhaps, but this trend doesn't bode well for the C's.

When the playoffs start, Rondo and KG have to be on the court, and they have to be at or near 100%. Anything less, and they can't possibly get past Cleveland. Or even Orlando.

Posted by Matt Talvi March 9, 09 04:06 PM
  1. IMO Rondos injury could turn out to be the best thing to happen to the Celtics this season. Marbury will be forced to learn the offense quicker and he has more raw talent than Rondo which will give the Celtics better results (ie more wins). Dont be surprised if Marbury is our starting point guard for the playoffs.

Posted by Wade March 9, 09 04:08 PM
  1. "now you're hoping all our players stay injured so you might have a chance this year"

Huh. Funny - reminds me of last year's finals.

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 9, 09 04:27 PM
  1. Wade, I agree that the injury will force marbury to learn the sets faster, but there is NO WAY he starts over rondo. He plays mediocre defense at best. We need a PG to not only control the tempo on offense but to be the first line of defense for our whole defense. We have people to score in our starting rotation, and rondo supplements them better. Marbury CAN thrive as the 2nd PG where he can run that second unit and set up guys like House and Powe...and when he gets his conditioning back (as well as a better grasp of our sets) He can score all he wants with that unit. Celtics should not have to worry about anyone else but themselves. If they get healthy, they can definitely repeat.

Posted by Crab Dribble March 9, 09 04:41 PM
  1. Wade,

Please pass the pipe over here. There is no friggin way Marbury is going to start over Rondo if both are healthy

  1. Doesn't matter, the refs won't let the Celtics anywhere near the trophy.

  1. Canibus hog you make real Laker fans like myself look stupid with your mentally challenged comments. What the f are you talking about? We havent won jacks#it yet. I do like our chances if Andrew Bynum comes back. It would have been nice to see how last years finals would have played out with him playing, although I dont believe in what if's. Lakers lost, Celtics won. Hopefully both sqads will meet again @ full strength & put on a show.

    Posted by Lakeshow8976 March 9, 09 05:45 PM
  1. Mmmmmm. More Marbury.

Nothing says Celtic tradition and lore like Marbury running the point at The Garden.

He's the 21st century Bill Russell, isn't he?

I hear Doc's also talking to Rodman about coming out of retirement again.

Posted by The LakerScoop March 9, 09 05:47 PM
  1. Lakeshow - I applaud you on your comments - but he will never go away. My whole point has been - wait until you win to gloat - you see that. This may be YOUR year with or without Bynum - but as a true hoop fan, Odom scares me more than Bynum does, at the moment. He is a matchup nightmare for us. He can drive, shoot and handle the ball. Bynum needs to receive the ball...good comments

Laker scoop - it''s not Rodman, it's George McGinnis, actually :)

  1. FakeSho,
---"Canibus hog you make real Laker fans like myself look stupid "---

It seems to me like you're doing a fine job of that on your own.
    ----------------------------------------

You say that you want see want to see what this team can do with Bynum. Yet, you somehow ignore the impact that Trevor Ariza has had on our season, forget Bynum.
    -----------------------------------------------

It looks like someone has been moonlighting at the OPK's School for Box Score Readers!!!!!!!!!
    --------------------------------------------

Our only concern at this point is homecourt advantage.
That should take care of us with or without Bynum.

    BTW,
Newsflash: If we do have a healthy Bynum by that time; this years' Finals will be a sleeper.

There will be no way that anyone will be able to handle us.

  1. I agree with the positive comment on Marbury.

I do not know if he is good or not, but the work certainly will allow the coach to find out, and will move him into a valuable position faster, IF he has value.

Posted by boblat March 9, 09 07:22 PM
  1. I have to agree with comment by aka David Stern.Definitely looks "they" want Cavs in finals.Look at the game we beat them, they went to the line what thirtysome times? How about the game after that when the Cavs played the Heat,D Wade can't even get a call on that long haired freak, and got tossed.Pierce seems to be the only one that can get any respect with calls.Ray gets nothing,Big baby,Powe they are pretty much automatic with fouls as soon as they get on the court.Looks like home court will be gone, even though we may be healthy, can't see us beating Cavs with the officiating the way its been.

  1. If anyone read the box scores - THE TRUTH played 45 minutes in the last two games. After going against King James, and outplaying him again, no wonder he was tired against Orlando and his shooting was off. So much for limiting the Big Three's minutes. If Walker, Giddens, and Pruitt are any good, play them. If not, get someone who CAN play. Frankly, I never understood why Scalabrine was on the team. (Can I say TOKEN without being shot at for un-P.C.ness?) It's not my fault I live 3,000 miles from Boston. No one has been a bigger fan than myself, for over 50 years, even when they couldn't beat a good high school team.

  1. NOTE TO Coach Rivers:

Unleash the dogs, darlin'. Them young boys are hunnnngry. Let the dogs out. Let 'em play. They know the plays. Let 'em loose, baby. Let 'em loose.

Defense is effort and execution. They'll get it done. Unleash 'em, Doc!

  1. Buck up kids, Doc Rivers does not need your advice, the Celtics will arrive at the playoffs healthy, and tear through whatever 1st & 2cd rounds we have to play. Yeesch don't you watch these guys? They are the best team in the NBA, (ask Hollinger,) we are better against better teams by a larger margin, and improving our play every practice. Teams like LA have nothing to improve, they've shot their loads. Le Bron was 5/15 the other night and when that happens in the playoffs he's gonna know who his Pappy is, us.

Posted by CK March 9, 09 11:02 PM
  1. Wade,
Marbury has "more raw talent" than Rondo? Do you watch basketball? Rondo doesn't even sweat half the time when he's playing. That should start to tell you how much of a natural athlete he is, not to mention how he's a pure point guard, rather than a shooting guard masquerading as a pg like Marbury is.

Posted by Classless March 9, 09 11:59 PM

  1. Go C's. Go Capt! Go Ray Ray! Go Steph! Go Mikki! Go Eddie! Go Walker! Go Perk! Go Powe Powe! It's the system that works. If the players run the system, the ball will fall and the "W" will follow. Their faith in the system will propel them.

Get healthy KG, Baby, Scal, TA, and Rondo!

  1. Hog...you need to get off the weed dude. I'm a laker fan and you're just embarrassing. The Lakers got pounded by the Blazers - that was a total embarrassment. I hate the celtics but you gotta give it to them that they don't let other teams kick their ass. Freaking lakers played like girls tonight - until they get rid of the trash like Luke, Farmar, Sasha, LO (plays like 5 good games a season) they will continue to be a team that can't win the big one. How is Luke even in the damn NBA?

Posted by NE Laker Fan March 10, 09 04:42 AM
  1. Classless,
So because Marbury perspires more than Rondo, that means he is not as good as him? Have you ever thought that maybe Rondo just has darker skin so it is harder to see the sweat? Its fans like you that give us real Celtic fans a bad name.

Posted by GARY March 10, 09 12:39 PM
  1. Wade - doesn't matter - Rondo is the starter, Marbury knows it, and if he acts up, he will be gone...Marbury was great, but he is not in shape. Rondo is the future, he pushes the ball and can distribute. Now, if we could put Rondo's athletic ability with Marbury's offensive capabilities - WOW

    Lakers 96, Blazers 76

    No worries.

  1. NE Laker Fan,

It's Laker fans like you who embarrass me because they don't even know their own team.
    ---------------------------------------------------
I can see your beef with Sasha.
And maybe about L.O.. I really can.

But I can always call out a basketball fraud when they sat something about Luke...
    -------------------------------------------------
AND YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED---- NE!!!!!!!!!

Luke Walton couldn't hit a jump shot if his life depended on it, but it doesn't matter. That is not his role on our team.
He is vital to getting our offense going. You are such a moron for not realizing that!!!!!!
You are just a box score reader like opk and just don't seem to understand the game.

You just come on this blog(out of nowhere, I must add), and drop ridiculous statements. Even worst, it's rhetorical nonsense that has been spewed over and over again by fickle fans like you who don't know jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you think that you are the first fool that I have schooled in this very subject????????
    -----------------------------------------

THERE IS MORE TO BASKETBALL THAN JUST SCORING!!!!!!!!!

Luke is a critical piece to our championship run, believe it or not.

  1. ---"Nothing like a (Rose) Garden party "---

As long as it's not in the TD Garden, I really don't care how bad we play.

But there is something about that place though.
Since 1993, the Lakers win pct in Portland is only 19%!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    ----------------------------------------------------

We'll have the homecourt advantage at whatever Garden we play at this season, that's all I'm thinking about right now.
    So it doesn't really matter.

    hog

You being as bright as you are missed my sarcasm. If you can't see the obvious talent gap that divides Rondo and a guy who hasn't played in over a year, then switch to hockey. I hear the Bruins are doing something or other this year...
