Villanueva tweeted during Sunday's Celtics game

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff March 16, 2009 06:13 PM

Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva sent a "tweet" during halftime of Sunday's Celtics-Bucks game, an act the PR in Sports blog says could be the first instance of a professional athlete using the increasingly popular Twitter service during a game.

Villanueva, whose Twitter ID is "CV31", sent this tweet from the locker room as his Bucks and Celtics were tied at 41:

"In da locker room, snuck to post with my twitt. We’re playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up.”

His halftime social networking apparently not a distraction, Villanueva scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Bucks pulled away for the win.

For those of you who haven't tried it, Twitter is an online service that allows users to send out 140-character messages to whoever chooses to follow them. Popular athletes who use Twitter include Shaquille O'Neal and Lance Armstrong. As far as I know no Celtics players are currently using Twitter.

If you're on Twitter and not following us already, search "GlobeCeltics" to get tweeted every time this blog is updated, or "GlobeAllSports" for all our blogs. You can also search "garydzen" to follow me as I cover various Celtics games.

  1. I think it's 160 characters, you 'character'. That's hilarious though...almost as hilarious as Shaq's twitter feed, which is ... uh ... hilarious

  1. Is this the next thing to write into an employee handbook, much like sending personal emails, etc.? Not something to be done on the job?

  1. It's definitely 140 characters. Players listening discreetly to iPods during warm-ups is one thing, arguably, but this seems like the first published instance of what will become cultural commonplace: professional athletes unable or unwilling to separate personal marketing/PR from team goals and objectives. Now admittedly Villanueva did indeed "step up" as he prognosticated in his tweet. But this culture of half-time self-expression will ultimately be detrimental in my view. Think of Terrell Owens on the sidelines with Twitter capabilities? Unfiltered access to his ideas? Technology will cause more problems than it solves in this context.

  1. As if anyone would want to waste thier time getting your insights

  1. Doc Rivers already stated that he wants to sign cancer-marbury to a long term deal. Knick fans approve that. How sweet it is to have marbury, the achiever of the lifetime loser award, on the Celtics.

  1. Well Golly Lee. I can't believe the Celtics signed the best point guard in NY Knicks history. Marbury singlehanded led the Knicks to a 112-226 record the past 4 years as the teams captain and starting point guard. Another incredible task he did was to lead the US Olympic team to a bronze medal as their starting point guard.

I hope that maybe the Celtics can work on a long term deal with this 'winner'. LOL

  1. What do you expect him to do? His team is stuck in the dreaded NBA middle class. They have no hope now and will not have any hope for the future. Twitter away.

  1. No long term deal - MORON - salary cap - MORON - bronze medal, all his fault? - MORON - Knicks haven't been relevant since Ewing - and still never won - MORON -was choosing a guy who can't play in the first round Marbury's fault, too - MORON

Please go away, you are ignorant

  1. Twitter is overkill, pretty much useless...and this is coming from a technology fiend. Use texts or Facebook Mobile.

Isn't this the clown that whined endlessly about bloggers making their posts "personal"?

  1. Hey Nick -
    look in the mirror
who makes it more personal than my buddy Nick?
I didn't make it personal with him until he wrote the exact same crap FOUR times
I answered him 3 times without using the word moron - not that that is any of your business

Do you memorize my quotes, or have you finally learned to cut and paste?

    Posted by opk3 March 17, 09 02:36 PM
  1. I've never whined in a post about comments being too "personal." Have you?Regardless, everyone recognizes you as the moral compass around here.

You pulling the "none of your business" card again? C'mon, opk3. Enough with the third grade one liners.

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 17, 09 03:45 PM
  1. Wow - where did I say that???????????????????????
You make the comments personal, Nick, you don't whine about it - just about Bynum
It is just your nature to be that way, I guess.
Do you deny everything you do and say in your life, too, or do you save the denials for us?
Oh yeah - THIS is your life - except on weekends

So, here is Nick - "I never said 'none of your business'"

    Posted by opk3 March 17, 09 04:52 PM
  1. Wha? Alright. I'll give this to you slow. Look two posts above. Ready? Okay, now find the words "not that that is any of your business." There ya go. Still confused?

Really. How the hell do you manage to get yourself dressed in the morning?

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 17, 09 06:49 PM
  1. I want to wish my Celtic buddies (gag) a happy st. patti's day.

The best thing to do with marbury is to let him be a starter over rondo. He is the best point guard in the NBA. New yorkers know that.

    Good Luck

  1. I never said "NONE of your business", you must have me confused with someone else - not my MO, your ship is sinking fast, no one knows what the hell you are talking about, you are the moral compass, I love Andrew Bynum, kiddo, chief, Lakers, hog, sparky..........
    blah blah blah

you are now boring me - time for a new schtick

    Posted by opk3 March 17, 09 09:16 PM
  1. opk3,
I think Native New Yorker is sarcastic in his comments. No need to get bent out of shape anytime Marbury/long term deal is brought up.

Posted by Classless March 18, 09 02:05 AM
  1. I agree with Classless. Cool your jets, opk3.

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 18, 09 10:13 AM
  1. Classless - thanks, consider me un-bent!

    Posted by opk3 March 18, 09 03:07 PM
  1. Wow. Look at opk3 bending over backwards for Classless...

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 18, 09 04:14 PM
  1. Enjoy the view, Nick!

    Posted by opk3 March 19, 09 11:19 AM
  1. Well, I'll give opk3 this. At the least he is finally owning up to seeking Classless' companionship.

  1. the above messages are the exact reason why twitter/blogs/social media of many different types are: A) Useless; B) Annoying; C) Irrelevant (since this article is about twittering pervading all facets of life, and it devolved into a pissing match starting with stephon marbury and ending with a view of someone bending over.)
i blame al gore. I'm also using a crappy mix of both of your names to prove a point. The anonymity involved with the blogosphere allows people to rant and rave with no worry of repercussions, so i can yell all i want about what chodas you all are, and you'll never know who i am. oh, go celtics.

Posted by Nick Van Opk3 March 19, 09 04:17 PM
  1. Thanks for the input, NVO. But no one cares what you think.

Posted by Nick Van Exel March 20, 09 03:15 PM
  1. Nick Van Opk3 - I personally agree with your comments
It is not my personality at ALL to behave this way
This guy just gets under my skin for some reason
Ordinarily, I would not respond, but I feel some need to expose him as full of crap
I'm sure it is just a phase, and it will pass eventually
    Thanks,

On the down side, though, I have a feeling you are about to be "Van Exeled"

    Posted by opk3 March 20, 09 05:05 PM
  1. Have flowers arrived at your doorstep yet, NVO? Watch for it - if he hasn't done it yet, I'm sure opk3 has thought about it.

  1. 3 days late - right on cue

    Posted by opk3 March 23, 09 05:07 PM
  1. Sorry opk3 - as you know, I don't spend my weekends pouring over this blog. I stay away. But we all know about the quality alone time your wife gets on weekends.

But that was quite a zinger.
