Globe 10.0: Do you consider Rondo an elite point guard?
On today's episode of Globe 10.0, columnists Bob Ryan and Dan Shaghnessy debate whether Rajon Rondo belongs in the conversation as one of the best point guards in the NBA. Watch the video, and cast your vote below as to whether you think he's the best young, up-and-coming floor general in the league.

Hell no!!!!!!
I'm tired of all of these people who want to anoint this guy as the next big thing.
Hit a free throw, why don't you???????????????????
hog
I'm a C's fan but anyone not picking Chris Paul is a fool. He's hands down the best point guard in the leaugue without question. It's not even debatable. Rondo is a reliable jumpshot away from being top 5 every year.
CP is the best right now, but I'm very surprised DHarris got NO votes! That kid is nothing nice. I agree with the previous poster-he needs to tool up his jumper a bit, but he is still right now one of the best PG's without question.
1)CP
2)DWill
3)RR
One thing important to remember here, Mr. Rondo has something none of the other's do: The Larry O'Brien trophy. And if your retort to that is "Well he didn't earn it-the Big 3 did..." Any bball fan with half a brain knows that the Big 3 are the tires, rims and frame of the car, but Rondo is the engine baby.
Chris Paul is the best point guard at this point in time. However Rondo is well on his way of being as good a point guard or could be better. Give him time. There's plenty of Rondo magic to come !!!
Rondo is probably the best player on the Celtics roaster now.
He has tremendous abilities and if he'll start knocking his out side shot and free throws consistently he' should be right up there with CP3.
I agree with the above comments...once he starts pumping out some 3's without looking like he is heaving a shot put and I will cast my vote for him. He is great at drawing the defense in, and puts pressure with his drives to the basket. But teams know this and know he is not going to bury outside shots... if he makes those on a consistant level he will move up.
Rondo will not be an elite point guard until he develops a consistent jump shot. According to 82games.com, he is one of the worst 2 point jump shooters in the league (at one point this season he was last in the league). With Ray Allen on his team, there is no reason why Rondo should be shooting the ball with such poor technique. Tommy even said during a broadcast that it's like trying to aim a gun from behind your right ear. Doc should be ashamed of himself for not teaming Rondo with Ray before and after every practice.
In situations like this, determining ELITE players, I do the following:
I pretend we are back in an 8 team league, and I ask myself, "would this guy start on one of those 8 teams?" If yes, he is elite.
IMHO, and in no particular order, I came up with:
Parker, Rose, Paul, D. Williams, Nash, Kidd, M, Williams, Harris and Davis - that's 9 that I think right now are better than R squared. I might have even missed some. He is on the brink, but needs a "J". Still our MVP this year, though.
This is the way I do it, and I have for years - it's fun, and we could also do it for the other 4 positions. What nice, intelligent, passionate, BASKETBALL-related discussions we could have!!!!!
No, I don't. Paul, Williams and Harris all stand in front of Rondo.
CP3 is a cry baby cheating temper tantrum in waiting. He throws the foot out, carries the ball all the time, and moans to the refs even when he gets the call. He has the talent, but it isn't on display very often. His ego is bigger than everyone except Kobe's.
Rondo works hard every play. He gets smashed to the floor way more often than CP without complaining. He is faster and plays better defense. He can score when needed and hit the big shots. Anyone who says he doesn't have a consistent jumper has not watched him play and has no clue. His numbers speak for themselves.
Paul is definitely head and shoulders the best point guard in the league right now. After that I gotta give the nod to Deron and then either Rondo or Parker. Rondo will absolutely be right in the top 3 if he continues to shoot as well as he has lately. He doesn't need to be a 3 point shooter (most pure point guards haven't been over the years...not all, but most) but just a reliable outside threat. I think he's been showing that is now becoming the case.
I think Rajon has outplayed the point guards mentioned in this poll..am I right? give me numbers but I am pretty sure he has.
It's ridiculous to mention Paul, Williams, and Rondo in the same sentence (although I just did). NBA followers know about Paul's game, but because Williams plays in the west and folks don't get a chance to see him play, his game is lesser known. Williams is a stud. He's strong, great outside shot, and penetrates as well as Paul. He and CP are easily 1-2. Rondo can't touch either one of these guys.
Did Ryan just say that Rondo is the best rebounding point guard since Fat Lever? Uh, HELLO, Jason Kidd? Rondo is a great rebounder, but let's give credit where credit is due. His shot is butt ugly and his free throws are always an adventure... I agree with everyone on those. He's a great player. No doubt, but he's no Chris Paul, but I am sure glad they drafted him instead of my choice that year, ehem, Marcus Williams (is he still even in the league?)..
Yeah, a reliable jump shot will make Rondo lethal. Let's not forget about Derrick Rose...
Rondo is invariably the most intelligent player on the court. He also has enough self-awareness to recognize his strengths and weaknesses; and the ability to hone and address them, respectively. Chris Paul is a freak, and an inevitable MVP. But given the current circumstances of rosters, Rondo exemplifies what a point guard, by definition, should be: see comment 3 for a decent analogy. He is near perfect in his role on his championship-defending team. Understated and brilliant - the thinking man's point guard.
Another way at looking at this is who is the best PG for the Celtics? Do Rondo's strengths make him the best PG for the Celtics. Given his teammates, and the current style of play what PG could could come in and make this team better?
1 cp3
2 dwill
3 rondo
IBlameDoc,
Great post!!!!!!!
---"Doc should be ashamed of himself for not teaming Rondo with Ray before and after every practice."---
Can you believe that Doc Rivers actually collected a couple of votes to be coach of the year???????
-------------------------------------
No Matter the blame, Danny Ainge or Kevin McHale, the C's did wind up with a pretty good team roster. And I've never had as much joy for something 3,000 miles away as much as I am right now about Doc Rivers bumbling it all up!!!!!!!!!!!!
But Ray Allen's shooting rubbing off on Rondo?????
Can you imagine that?????????
I will be so pissed if Doc reads these threads and ends up saving his own job.
Because you know Phil would have had those two working together from day one!!!!!!!
hog
Rondo does not belong in that group!!! I would also add that there is a pretty good point guard over there in Denver. Billups has proven himself to be a winner. He is a master at running the floor. His greatness does not also show up in the box score because he does the little things hat make his teams into winners.
CP3... the amount of people who voted for Rondo shows the laughable Boston bias.. and Im a Boston fan...
Phil's a hobbled, broken-down loser with no loyality-guess that's why you relate to him so well Hog. Do I have to go back to the LA Times Lakers' blog and expose you again? Just admit you're a Celtics fan, or a stalker of them. lol..
Hey 131? No one knows who the hell you are. Do you really think anyone gives a crap?
And BTW - Rondo still can't hit an outside shot. But keep talking about Phil!
131,
Seriously, when did you ever expose me, or even show up on the LA Times Blog???
The only one who ever came over there was RED'S LOVE CHILD, and he was obliterated!!!!!!!!
--------------------------------
So bring it on CHUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hog
"Red's Love Child"... that clown was classic.
I do not care where he ranks with the other point guards in the league. All I know is that when I watch the C's play, he is the one that I root for the most. He should be the league most improved player this year. Especially if he continues playing at the level he has in the past 3 games.
