Celtics no different without KG?

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff April 4, 2009 12:39 AM

That's what Hawks coach Mike Woodson said following his team's 104-92 loss to the Celtics Friday night.

“They’re not that much different," said Woodson. "KG, he’s just a double-double guy, and I think Big Baby and Perkins are filling up that void of him not being in there, I think they’re doing an excellent job. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they’ve won the title so they’ve been through the ringer, they’ve been through big games last year in the playoffs so they don’t shy away from it."

Hawks forward Josh Smith said he thinks Garnett's absence actually helps the Celtics.

“I think it is kind of a gift for them to have KG out of the lineup because they are going to need guys like that to come in and step up," said Smith. "Big Baby has been doing it all season, I’ve been watching the Celtics play and he’s been able to make an impact for their team, not just tonight but for the whole season.”

Despite Smith's praise, Davis said he still expects teams to dare him to shoot during the playoffs.

“Most definitely," said Davis. "They don’t believe in me yet, but I just got to keep working hard, make sure I keep doing what I have to do for my team.”

  1. Mike Woodson is an idiot.

  1. Atlanta Coach Mike Woodson has been drinking from the bottle of the Village Idiot, if he thinks the Cs are the same without KG. We also need Powe back, and Marbury to do what he was brought in to do - or we're not hanging Banner # 18 this year.

  1. That is just Coach-speak. He is giving us respect, No need to read more into it than that. Even if he doesn't feel that way, I take it as a compliment! The Hawks are good, and maybe he is using it as motivation for his own team. I think Doc would say the same thing.....almost anyone would, except Phony Phil Jackson who can't seem to mind his own business...it's an irrelevant comment!

  1. Not quite Mike..not quite. Guys like Baby stepping up is what we need right now, but people who don't follow Boston closely have no idea just how big a difference KG makes. It's not just about the points, boards and blocks-it's his mere presence in the building. When you walk into the Garden and it's known that KG is not in the lineup that game, everything is taken down a notch. Paul Pierce may be The Truth, but KG is "The Heart and Soul.."

  1. Why does this type of nonsense keep coming up when big players go downÉ

  1. The difference is Marbury.

As soon as Marbury left the Knicks, the team had a 6 game improvement in the win column. That's a 26% improvement.

Knicks are trending positively. Once Steph is gone, all teams he's left has shown improvement. No different here.

Look at the Celtics' record, they started losing more games as soon as Steph joined them.

KG will surely tie a noose around Steff's neck if they don't repeat.

  1. Marbury's continuing shooting slump is making his acquisition a total bust. It is really a shame because that one aspect erases everything positive he gives your team.

Marbury can still get into the paint like it's nobodies business, but if he is not getting stripped he's chucking an airball up.
    ---------------------------------------------

He is giving the C's exactly what they don't need:
-He doesn't taker care of the ball and he doesn't score.

A lot of people don't realize how important scoring is to Steph's role. Other than protecting he ball, scoring is vital for him. It stretches out the defense and it allows the Celtics to do what they do best: attack the basket!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  1. Has Stephon Marbury become the face of the Celtics? At least he is to the Boston Herald. On my way to Toronto, I got rerouted through Boston last night, picked up a Herald. The front page had a tease headline above the banner about the Celtics winning, with a picture of Marbury and his Starbury head tattoo. Marbury didn't have much of a game (1 of 7) and wasn't even mentioned in the game story. Odd.

  1. Marbury's assist/TO ratio is 2 to 1.........yep, keeps getting it stripped.......right again Hog, open mouth, insert claw

  1. Sorry but the only reason the Cetls are doing well is because of their CAKE schedule this season. The Celtics barely have ANY back to back games. Heck they barely play every other day. Anything for Stern to make his beloved Celts do well I suppose.

  1. As far as the Celtics being better without KG, this is probably the stupidest statement I have heard since he came here. He provides such a spark to
this team! His defensive skills are what put the Celtics back in the running and
made them World Champions last year. Without KG we get nothing done
in the second round. Sure the Celtics beat Cleveland here in Boston, but without
KG for the playoffs, I firmly believe the Celtics will have their hands full winning at all. GET REAL people, KG is the heart and soul of the defensive scheme of the
Celtics. I don't even want to think about him not being available. With him, I believe we have a good shot of giving Cleveland and then LA a real run for the title.

  1. I agree Woodsen is blowing smoke even though the Celts deserve kudos for how well they have been playing without KG. Woodsen had to say something after his team lost to us without KG playing. However, when we play the upper echelon teams, it will be critical to have KG even if he's only 80%. His inspiring the other players is invaluable. I also think you guys are giving Marbury a bad rap. I agree he hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn, however his defense and attitude have improved as well as his ability to dish the ball and drive to the basket which opens up opportunities for other players. I keep hoping his shots will start to fall. Maybe for the playoffs. Time will tell.

  1. ODOG - I believe the schedule is the same as last year.....82 games....spoken like a true Laker fan, can't give our team any credit for playing well...Here' what I HOPE happens
    Cleveland - Charlotte, Atlanta, Boston
LA - Utah, Portland, San Antonio
    Boston - Philly, Orlando, Cleveland
Who has the easiest road to the Finals?

  1. ODOG-did you bump your head? Go back and look at the 1st 3 months of the schedule. I have heard alot of nonsense here this season, but congrats-you take the cake with that little tidbit of pure ignorance my friend. lol

  1. ODOG,
This isn't the NFL. Every team plays the same schedule. Nothing is "cake" or tough.

    opk3,
unfortunately, Canibus is right about Steph getting stripped. He ALWAYS is getting stripped in the lane.
