Ray Allen suspended tonight
Celtics guard Ray Allen has been suspended one game without pay for elbowing Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao in the groin, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations. The incident occurred with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter of the Celtics' 107-76 loss to the Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena Sunday. Allen will serve his suspension tonight when the Celtics visit the 76ers. Tony Allen will likely start in Ray Allen's place.

Actually thats good news. Now Doc can give Ray the night off without being accussed of tanking the game.
I dont get why Eddie House never gets a start. That guy could light it up if he could play 35-40 minutes. They don't need him to backup Rondo, they got "Starbury" for that. Heck, they even have Pruitt. Let Eddie play!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad to hear this.
Nobody has said anything on here about it since it happened. It just goes to show you how in denial Celtic fans are.
At least when Bynum broke Wallace's rib Laker fans were vocal about it.
When Ariza checked Fernandez, Laker fans were vocal about it.
In one instance, Rat Allen single-handedly ruined his long earned rep with many of the NBA faithful with his cowardly below the belt elbow.
C's fans should be outraged by his actions.
hog
THE NBA HAS IT OUT FOR OUR CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is it that no one has mentioned the fact that Varejao threw Ray Allen down after the whistle had clearly stopped play? I'm not condoning Ray's actions, but if Varejao had any class, he would've stopped and let the two untangle, instead of throwing him down. What would've happened to AV had Ray been severely hurt while hitting the floor? Would the league then say something to him? I have to wonder. It's all about what happens after, not punishing the original perp. Anyway, give Ray the night off and bring home a win.
Also good for the Sixers.
----------------------------------------
If they can some how squeeze by an Allen-Less Celtic team, I actually like their chances tomorrow at Quicken Loans.
If that is the case, coupled with a Chicago loss tomorrow vs Toronto; the C's are looking at a first round matchup with the Bulls and an early exit from the post season!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA
hog
Not surprised. Figured the suspension would be handed down. Just feel it should've and wish it would've included Varejerk too.
They deserved it (the elbow to the groin)the way that team acted toward the end of the game. It's more like a reward by giving him the night off.
What a little Biatch move. I've lost all respect for that guy. He wasn't even shoved to the ground.
What happened to Varejao? Did he get a suspension for slamming Allen to the floor??? No!This is a continuance of the Watson call against Beckett, the folks who run all these offices live in loserville NY!!Sterns never misses a chance to rule against the celtics, same goes with the other 2 clowns Goodell and Watson!!!!!! FU fellas!
Not good news for me. I live in Philly and bought $80 tix to tonight's game before the season started. Now no KG and no Ray. Waste of f'n money.
wow this is great news for the celts- keep this bum off the court- -but the NBA should make him play to penalize the team...his prime is in rearview mirror and thats about it. Yesterday was embarrassing especially his man-up attitude about hitting a guy in the groin....
Without KG this team is hopeless in big games...PP turns back into the high scoring schmuck he was a few years back and Ray just plain doesnt have miuch going for him in big games...
Please.....did you see the way Varejao put his arms up and taunted Ray Allen? I don't blame Ray, they think they are so big and bad right now, well, I hope you guys pull it together and show them who the real CHAMPS are..... GO CELTS.
1/82 of his salary will help fund a whole new NBA charity initiative.
This was the right decision for all concerned.
should kicked his teeth in
I agree with you on the need for rest, but isn't Sideshow Bob going to get anything for throwing him down?
Next time hit him harder. Someone takes you down, you make them hurt.
Seems like he always takes nights off anyway.
Varejao flops around a lot and complains to the officials quite often. Not only am I glad Allen gave him something to complain about but Rondo flopped when Varejao barely touched him during Sunday's game.
Good Job Ray!
It's worth it. Hey Cavs, GAME ON!!!!!!! LeBron, does the name Dominique Wilkins ring a bell. You're all style and no guts. You arent ready to win the title because you dont have the heart and arent willing to sdacrfice and do what you have to do.
Whats funny is that ray allen's "elbow to the groin" did absolutely no damage, what a weak bitch. Cleveland's taking the Title hands down
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
nice run last year. no soup for you this year. next year? rondo, good. the rest? old and expensive.
next year's prediction:
pp (the truth) will continue to spit of his opponents (in preseason games!), jesus shuttledouche will continue to elbow and knee his opponents nads, kg will continue to intimidate anyone and everyone 10" shorter and 60+ lbs lighter.
your team is as classy as you are, boston.
Boston fans are the biggest homers and sore losers in the USA. Wait, Philly is, no Pittsburgh. Whatever. It is absolutely hilarious to read all the crybaby whining going on in Beantown about the Celtics being beaten to a pulp by the best Team in the NBA. My God, with all the Championship preening that the Celtics did last year, and they barely squeaked by Atlanta and Cleveland. They NEEDED the home court. They would have been one and done without it.
Crybaby Boston fans can't stand it when they are embarrassed. But they forget that all Celtics haters out there wanted and enjoyed every minute of the Cavs celebration dancing. Everyone in the whole country hates the front running Celtic Nation, just like they hate Yankee Nation. More people were made happy that the Celtics were embarrassed than were not.
Boston Fan has some nerve crying about being shown up. 6 championships in 9 years has spoiled Boston fan. Hopefully, the reasonable, intelligent Boston fans are the ones who don't post these ridiculous tantrums. If the Celtics don't like it, why not show up in the game. They quit in the first quarter. They were awful. It happens to every team. But the crybaby fans in Boston, they are one of a kind.
Folks, the NBA has eyes. Varejao wasn't suspended because he didn't "throw" Allen down. They got tangled up and Varejao twisted and Allen came along for the ride. It was a gentler version of when DeJuan Blair from Pitt got tangled up with Thabeet from UConn in the regular season.
And thanks to the moderator on here who has literally deleted 3 of my last 5 posts.
May I please ask you why???
You let people post stuff like: "should kicked his teeth in" lol, yet you won't let a finely written quote like mine go live because it has the tag: "BOSTON SUCKS!!!!!!" finalizing it ???????
---------------------------------------
It is really a disservice to some of the readers one here who are still learning the basics of the game to erase those posts.
I'm teaching some of these guys on here.
You can shelter them from the truth all you want, but you are really just proving to me that you feel the same way yourself and it is just way too much for you to accept.
--------------------------------------
If you had any balls you'd let all of my posts go live and have some faith that the Lakers will fall short.
Like I've stated on here before; do you know how stupid I'm going to feel if the Lakers don't win?????
Do you know how much time I would have wasted??????

WE ARE GOING TO WIN ANYWAY EDDIE HOUSE IS THE PERSON WHO TURNS GAMES AROUND IF WE HAVE HIM WE ARE GOING TO WIN!
If you look at the video, you'll see Andy and Ray jockeying for position when the FT went up. Their arms got locked up. After the ball goes in, Ray tugged at Andy pulling him back. Andy pulled back and his size advantage brought Ray with him. Ray ended up in the floor where he elbowed Andy in the groin.
I assume words preceded the tangle. The FT went in and there was not need for Ray to pull Andy's arm back. Andy should have disentangled instead of pulling Ray around him. But, by all means, don't elbow a man in his groin. That's just wrong.
I think Ray Allen elbowed him because of his stupid hair...Ray knows where its at when it comes to hair. and basketball. You could never compare Varejao's game to Ray Allen's, "All Day Ray" is way too good.
I think/hope the Celtics hate Varejao, first Big Baby's close-line and now Ray's elbow, I love it!!
You don't cheap shot somebody there (on purpose) unless your life depends on it. If he took offense, Ray should have stood up like a man and gotten in his face.
It doesn't matter if you don't like the other player-you don't go there.
Which player would do what Ray did, and which would be a man:
Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett, & Larry Bird.
These guys would have either gotten even on the court by playing better basketball, or they would have stood up to him man to man-not elbows to the package!
sportsbozo1 you missed the worst piece of NY sh#t in pro sports, I give you Colin Campbell who decided that Patrice (he was askin for it) Bergeron's life was worth a 3 game suspension to a team that already was working on a 30 game one!
Let em take the gloves off and dance like the NHL. Only problem with that is you are basically fighting with your underware on. Ouch...... Pats, Sox, Bruins and Celtics. Can you imagine all 4 titles in the same year? What's that city in Michigan that calls itself "Titletown?" Pour me another Sam Amber and let's keep the party going.....
Um, to everyone who thinks this is unfair or too extreme, how about u get elbowed in the balls, and then let's see u have sympathy for that guy. Basically, Varejao gave Allen a fender bender, and Allen pulled out an RPG and blew up Andy's car. How can you Boston fans be so entranced by your mediocre team that u don't even recognize unsportsmanlike conduct on behalf of one of your "big three" , or i guess "big two" without Garnett, or i guess "big one" without allen. wow, Boston sucks.
anyone who thinks ray is over the hill should look at his +/- stats. He leads the team by a substantial margin in that category.
I'm sorry; I'm not defending all the dancing around, but Ray's excessive whining about it afterward did not exactly reflect well on his team. After all, the Celts love to dance around during blow-outs. And you saying that Ray is made of glass? Is his skinny butt gonna be sore after THAT little tumble? This is a contact sport fellas. He was not injured. If they handed out suspensions for every time someone got tangled and tipped over, then there would be ten suspensions per day in the NBA. An elbow to the crotch is fundamentally different and you all know it. What if the shoe was on the other foot? Allen's frustration with his own performance (did you see that LBJ block?) made him crawl inside Varejao's jersey, and got dropped.
Exactly-the 1 game suspension means nada-it was worth it to elbow that exxagerated D-Leaguer. Ray wouldn't have played much tonight anyway. Now Doc gives him 25 minutes or so Wednesday to keep him fresh. On a more solemn note, I doubt KG is going to be 100% during the playoffs-it's very good to have Leon back, and he is going to have to really step up (along with Baby). Can't wait for Saturday-front row under the basket baby! YEAH!
He won't get anything because Allen flopped. Ray Allen is a girly man compared to Varejao.
Clevelands bench antics were no different than the one and done's in game six of the finals last year. Bynum time!
I think that Allen and Josh Beckett should quit sports and open up their own medical clinic. Allen could specialize in vasectomies and Beckett in lobotomies. Glad they suspended that jerk Beckett. They should have given Allen 6 days too.
If Ray Allen hadn't done anything, Varejao likely doesn't even get a tech - they got tangled up, and Varejao clamped down on on his arm. It's a cheap move, but extremely common - basketball players, especially big men, use their arms for positioning. Sometimes the refs see it and call a foul. I don't blame Ray Allen for getting ticked, he ended up on the floor.
But Ray Allen threw an elbow at Varejao's testicles. I repeat, Ray Allen threw an elbow at Varejao's testicles. This is not a defensible act. It is not a basketball play. It was not during the play. No matter how it is spun, Ray Allen threw an elbow at Varejao's testicles. There is no conspiracy - it's right there in the replay, and he did it right in front of the ref. Ray Allen threw an elbow at Varejao's testicles.
And then complained about the cheap shot he received.
Please. Give me a break. It was a wimp move by an aged player who has seen his better days. I have been a die hard Celtic fan my whole life, I can't even defend such a wimpish act. Putting your elbow in some other guys groin - what a joke.
What's with our Celts anyway? Beyond the bush league elbow by Ray, what was that flop Rhondo attempted against LeBron in the first quarter. He was so afraid of LeBron, he was lying on the floor before LeBron even got within five feet of him.
I love how everyone here is in serious denial. Please watch the video again. Varejao turns with their arms locked, and Allen loses his balance and fall down on his own. I love how everyone says he's being thrown down like he was grabbed and violently tossed to the ground.
I would have given Varejao a technical for talking afterwards, but seriously guys, do you really think that was worth taking a shot at somebody? I think this is a case of Allen being embarrassed and trying to make up for it by lashing out.
I'm a Celtics fan, but seriously? seriously???
42 comments about basically nothing??? Go read a book.
I won't lie; I'm a Cavs fan. With that said, I think both men were guilty of technical fouls (which were issued to both of them, and thus, they offset), and in Allen's case he was lucky he didn't get hit with a flagrant and thrown out of the game right then and there.
I'm not going to defend Andy; he locked Ray up in a similar manner to what most big men do (including KG, who I love as a Basketball fan but can't stand seeing in Celtic green) and took advantage of the smaller Allen in regards to jockeying for position in case the FT missed and was up for grabs. Andy's been called for it by officials in the past, and I'm certain he'll be called for it again in the future.
There is still no excuse for what Allen did. It's not a conspiracy against Boston (and for God's sake, the city of Cleveland has more reasons to feel like there's a conspiracy against them than Boston ever will); it's the Refs seeing a blatant action that could lead to an all-out brawl by either both men or both teams. The NBA, the Cavs, and the Celtics don't need to denigrate themselves or the game with such blatant and uncouth actions.
Allen should be ashamed, and either put-up or shut-up if/when the Eastern Conference Finals are played between these two great teams. Until then, GO CAVS!
All Celtic Fans are band wagon fans. This is the same "fan base" that wanted to ride Paul Pierce out of town just three years ago. YOU ALL HATED HIM. Then, the NBA steps in, and hands you Kevin Garnett, in a complete THEFT that still has Minnesota realing - years later!! (Just like how P. Gassol got handed over the LA?? Conspiracy anyone??) and now you all love "your team" again!? I laugh in your face, Boston. You stopped coming to Celtic games. You stopped wearing the jerseys. You were all about your Patriots. Nothing more. And now?? You're all Pro's about how great the Celtics are. The league is fixed. The outcome is fixed. And LeBron is the newly crowned King. You had your chances last year, and the seasons before when the League didn't want Detroit in the Finals. Enjoy it. It'll be another 20 years before you're good again... that is, barring any more illegal trades that are so one-sided, like the Miami Heat sending you D Wayde for Rhondo... wouldn't surprise me. Have you all thanked McHale lately??
To majorbostonfan,
The Cavs have a reason to be cocky...39-1 at home after beating the PREVIOUS "champs" by 31..thats a fairly good excuse to "think they are big and bad"...ray allen is an embarassment such a respected player throwing away his reputation in frustration
Since this game was the last of the season and it having no affect on the seedings the league should have suspended him for the 1st playoff game. Stern keeps giving these dirty Celtics players these cheap punishments and they are just going to keep doing it .... Its gonna get worse and worse (as it has since it started after they got Garnett). All these slap on the wrist type penalties are a JOKE and have NO effect on the players. It has gotten so bad over there in Boston with Garnett's "im above the law, above the rules, above the game" type behavior. First it was just him but now its extended to almost the entire team. Baby Davis, Pierce, Powe, Garnett, and now even the very respectable Ray Allen have all done something just disgraceful and uncalled for this season to an opposing player that shows the exact OPPOSITE of what a true champion with 3 allstar future hall of fame players is supposed to posess and show and lead by example with.
If you watch the footage carefully, it doesn't even seem intentional. Look where his eyes are, completely away. He just came up wrong if you ask me. Ray allen is one of the most respectable players in the NBA.
There is alot of love on this blog..it brings a tear to my eye. "Weeeeee are the champions my friennnnnnd. And we'lllllll keep on fighting til the end. Weee are the champions, weeee......"
Clevelands bench antics were no different than the one and done's in game six of the finals last year. Bynum time!

Yeah because Boston actually won the title. Stupid.
It was intentional and classless. And the way we dominated your Celts on the floor and the sideline shows who the real beast of the East is.
kelly - the Boston "One And Dones". I like it.
Ray Allen and Big Baby are two of the biggest low life's in pro ball
How many Championships have the Celtics won in the last ten years. Come back to earth Boston fans. One and done is the only banner, Celtics will be hanging in beer brain hall in 2009
Good, it should have been two games...he got caught with one of his hood street moves.
