Garnett expected to miss entire playoffs

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff April 16, 2009 01:30 PM

If the Celtics are to fulfill their quest for a second consecutive NBA championship, it appears they will have to go the distance without star forward and emotional leader Kevin Garnett.

Coach Doc Rivers said this morning that Garnett, who injured his knee Feb. 19 at Utah and has been in limbo since, will miss the second-seeded Celtics' first-round series against the Bulls, and that it is unlikely he would be available to play at all in the postseason, which begins Saturday.

"Yes, he's out," Rivers told the Globe. "I feel for the season, but we just don't know yet."

Rivers also said Garnett will likely have offseason surgery on his right knee to remove a bone spur. But a strained popliteus tendon -- and not the spur -- has affected Garnett's inability to return, Rivers said. The tendon strain must heal naturally, and has taken longer than anticipated.

A team spokesman confirmed that the team is approaching the postseason as if the 12-time All-Star and reigning Defensive Player of the Year will not be able to participate. In his second season with the Celtics, he averaged 15.8 and 8.5 rebounds per game.

“I’m devastated for him,” Celtics guard Ray Allen said at practice. “This is the time of year you’ve been waiting for.”

The decision was made after Garnett, who has missed the last nine games and 22 of 26 overall since injuring the knee, struggled during an early workout this morning.

"After today, there's no way he can play," Rivers said during an interview after Garnett's workout on sports radio WEEI this morning.

An NBA source confirmed to the Globe that Garnett was only about 70 percent healed from the knee injury. Surgery is now being considered, but there is no timetable.

"This is the first time I've said it, because it's the first time I've really watched him," Rivers told WEEI. "He's not gonna be ready. After watching him run, there's no way. So, we're gonna move without him. And the way I saw him move today guys, I don't know if he'll be ready . . . he's just limping. He just can't run . . .

"This was an honest run today, you couldn't fake your way through it . . . and the guy is a warrior, you can see him trying to mask it, but after 20 minutes of running, there's just no way. I don't see it. I just don't. And I've flipped completely because I was watching him move, and he looked great, and then . . . after today, there's no way he can play.

"If he can't get through biking and working out without swelling and stiffness and his leg locking, I just don't know how you play in the playoffs."

Rivers added that Garnett would continue to get treatment in the slim hopes that he would be able to return at some point, but emphasized again that it's a very long shot. As one might expect, the intensely competitive Garnett did not take the decision well.

'He was frustrated. He was mad at me, mad at everybody. Then he understood," Rivers said. "He put up a fight. He's really frustrated, but that's Kevin. That's why we got him, because he cares so much."

Despite the discouraging news, Rivers was positive about the team moving forward: "I think we're going to be fine . . . we have some mentally strong guys, very tough guys."

Garnett was at the team’s practice facility this afternoon but did not want to talk to reporters, Rivers said.

Though Garnett did not appear at games while he was recuperating in the regular season, he is expected to travel with the team and sit on the bench.

“He’s the unquestioned leader of the ballclub. He can help us just by being on the bench,” Paul Pierce said. “The type of competitiveness that he has, I’m sure it’s eating at him.”

Garnett chooses to watch games from the locker room rather than the bench when he is injured because it frustrates him to not be able to contribute. But owner Wyc Grousbeck said during an interview with WEEI this afternoon that the Celtics want him to change his policy during the postseason.

"I think that's essential, and I think we're going to ask him to do that," Grousbeck said. "I think Doc, Danny [Ainge], everybody will make it clear that we'd like his presence out there. He is a warrior in every way. I mean, unusual sounds strong, but he is the most different guy any of us has ever met over here. He just does it in his way, and it works, and he became Defensive Player of the Year, MVP formerly, and now a champion. It's Kevin Garnett, it's not anybody else. There's never been another one like him.

"If he needs to sit in the locker room just to be able to keep his head together, we can respect that. And it actually worked pretty well for us in the regular season. But I think, playoff-time, we'd like to have him out on the bench."

Grousbeck admitted that Garnett's situation only secures top-seeded Cleveland's position as the favorite in the Eastern Conference.

"They earned home court, they earned the best record, they are clearly a championship-quality team, and in my opinion they have the best basketball player on the planet right now . . . Mo Williams," Grousbeck said, his sense of humor apparently intact. "They are the favorites, and there's a reason they're the favorites, and we're going to have to do something really heroic to get them. I respect Cleveland, and wouldn't be surprised if they won the whole thing. But I'm going to do everything I can to prevent it."

It's an attitude shared by the Celtics' coach, despite today's disappointing news.

"We'll be ready, I can guarantee you that," Rivers said.

The Globe's Frank Dell'Apa, Chad Finn, and David Lefort contributed to this report. Material from the Associated Press also was used.

  1. Are you kidding me? They've been tugging us along this whole time about Garnett's knee. First they say it just needs some rest then the games start piling on. Next they say he'll probably play the last 2 games of the season, then just the last game, THEN I start hearing how they might sit him out for the first game of the postseason, and NOW??? This is just ridiculous. What's really going on Danny?

  1. Hey, what can you do? If he can't play, he can't play. Garnett has been a virtual Iron Man in his career, so you have to figure that he didn't want to throw in the towel, and I'm sure the C's wanted to remain optimistic. It's a shame, but Max has been saying for a month that he thought KG's injury was more serious than the C's were saying, based on his play after he rehabbed.

Better to take care of it, and see how far the C's can go without him.

  1. UNBELIEVABLE! That's a tough, tough loss for Boston. Time for the bench players, especially Big Baby and Leon to step it up a notch and show everyone that the Celts can win with a total team effort. Guess we have to trust in Doc's call, but I know if KG thinks he can be a factor in late playoff games he'll be in there!

  1. Without KG I dont even see the Celtics beating the Bulls in the 1rst round. Jefferson, Gomes and West are looking mighty good right now. Maybe Boston fans should reconsider the whole Allen and KG trade. Sure they got one title but at what cost? They will be rebuilding for the next 10-15 years because of it.

Posted by Tomisme April 16, 09 09:50 AM
  1. Welp…this could certainly change things a bit…this also wreaks of foul play. Just like the Sox who string fans along until the last possible moment before announcing a rain delay. They force you to enter the park, spend $7 on beers and $5 on dogs and then they announce the game has been postponed…celts def milked everything they possibly could out of fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the big three in the playoffs before this “breaking news”.

  1. Despite the sad news about KG (and truly it is VERY sad), we must move ahead. Thankfully, Powe, Davis, and Moore are putting up comparable numbers on the DEFENSIVE and offensive end. Let's go C's; DEFENSE brings the rings.

(KG, I'm praying for your knee. I wish you and your family well.)

  1. This will make it very difficult to repeat, but I'd rather see Garnett recover and be healthy for next season than risk further injuring his knee and possibly affecting his career. I hope he's cheerleader on the bench. He can help the Celtics in that fashion.

  1. I now wonder if the Celtics organization has been honest with us at all concerning Garnett's injury. Surely they just didn't decide today that he wasn't going to be able to go in the play-offs. It's obvious to me that the injury was much worse than we were led to believe.

  1. Why they dragged this on is beyond me. I knew this was coming and it does not surprise me one bit. Time for surgery and start working for next year. Because if any of you think they can repeat without Garnett, you probably still believe in Santa Claus.

    Posted by rob67 April 16, 09 10:01 AM
  1. I dont understand what the actual injury is? He got hurt nearly three months ago to me it seems that if he needed a surgery he could have gotten it then and then be able to play by now. This is obviously a devastating injury, I don't question his heart or desire but common sense says that this could have been avoided or dealt with more effectively.

  1. Not good at all. The only positive is that Powe, Tony A. and Davis are playing well, and Marbury is too. I also think that other teams may not respect them... and they do have a lot of talent. Can't see them winning it all though.

first brady on the first day of a much anticipated season.
then the sox lose a burner to the rays and start the season like 3-7.
now garnett is out for the whole playoffs!

last august, I really thought we had a shot at another 3-peat. not that the C's can't do it without, but man is this karma or what?!

  1. Unreal. Rivers continues to raise our hopes and slams it down... first, a 2 week estimation for Garnett's return turned into 13 games. Then, saying he'll be back for the last 3 games of the season turned into missing the remainder of the season. Then, saying he definitely will be ready for the playoffs turned into "likely out for the playoffs". If we can't have a good estimation on his progress, then don't give fans false hope!!!!

  1. Disappointed, yes! Discouraged, NO! I would not count the C's out just yet. Will it be tougher now? Absolutely! These are the defending NBA Champs and they will not go out easily. You can already imagine Doc's putting together a Game Plan. They will literally take it one game at a time.

Now that we know we are not only disappointed but pissed. I think of Garnet at every press conference talking up a storm the last two years, but since the injury barely a word. That told you everything now we know.

  1. Mark my words: if the Celtics are eliminated before the conference championship, DOC RIVERS NEEDS TO BE FIRED FOR THE KEVIN GARNETT FIASCO!

First Kevin Garnett injures his knee way back in MID FEBRUARY and was SUPPOSED to be ready by mid/late March... according to Doc Rivers. Then he goes down again, but Doc Rivers is "optimistic he can return in time for the Postseason". Then as the postseason gets closer and closer, Garnett is STILL out but Doc is "just resting him for the playoffs". Now all of the sudden Doc FINALLY watches Kevin Garnett out there and realizes "there's no chance in Hel Kevin Garnett is going to be ready"? WHERE WAS HE TWO MONTHS AGO WHEN GARNETT FIRST GOT INJURED?

If Garnett simply needed his knee scoped or another few weeks off at the end of March, someone NEEDS to be fired for this. For Doc Rivers to keep come out saying "Garnett is going to be fine" until the last possible moment reeks of complete IDIOCY, INEPTITUDE, and INCOMPETENCE. And the real sad thing is I have a feeling that if Doc Rivers had Garnett got THE CORRECT TREATMENT back in February he WOULD have been ready and we WOULDN'T be having this conversation now. In fact, Doc Rivers reminds me of an AIG executive... HE HAS TO GO!

  1. I can't believe how shocked everyone is! This has been clear since he tried to come back a month ago. He played for 2 or 3 games in limited minutes and they shut him down again. The fact that he was out for several weeks and was shut down again so quickly should have raised serious red flags for anyone paying attention. I bet he has some kind of tear, probably minor, like a meniscus, something that COULD be played through with enough rest IF minor enough. I bet that was the hope, that by the time the playoffs rolled around that he'd be able to play through. The fact that he couldn't weeks ago, however, should have sent a message TO US that this was more serious. Nothing wrong with Doc's decision to try. Seems logical to me to see if he could get to the playoffs before electing for surgery. I bet it happens soon after the playoffs are over. If it is indeed something like a meniscus, he would have missed the rest of the season (in all likelihood) anyway, and putting it off is not going to hurt him in the long run. I’m glad they held out hope on the off chance that he could get through it. But this was clearly the likelier outcome the whole time! Go Celts! No, they probably won’t win out this year, but I think they can still push Cleveland/Orlando/LA…whoever ends up knocking us out. And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Big Baby, Leon and Mikki are able to do enough to compensate for KG and give us a legit shot anyway! People will be writing us off even more than they were!!

As a true Laker fan I can relate because that is how we Laker fans felt about Bynum. Now, before any of you non-laker fans think that I am comparing Bynum with KG I'm not. But the situation is ironically different. So, dont take your frustrations out on me. I am glad to see true Celtic fans staying positive and not jumping ship lke Bill Simmons already did. See ya next year! GO LAKERS!

Jefferson & Gomes look so good they're not even in the playoffs. And you're right, how could the Celtics give up on Delonte, a guy who will always be, at best, the 6 or 7 best player on a good team. I mean, it's not like Pierce & Allen have spent the last 2 seasons shutting down Kobe. Oh wait? They have. My bad. But as long as Gasol & Odom come up as big as they did in the playoffs last year. What? They didn't do shit and were posterized by Powe and Davis on multiple occasions? Man, I guess I just have a bad memory. I'll just have to refresh it by watching the Finals DVD's from last year. I guess when you have as many high character guys as the Lakers (Phil, Kobe, Odom, Gasol the Flopping Whiner), you don't have to worry about selling your soul.

  1. The Celtics kept promising fans the KG carrot. Instead, they got the stick, and now they are stuck with watching an incomplete team battle in vain to repeat as champions.
Give the big guy whatever treatment/surgery he needs and get him ready for next season, but shame on the Celtics for stringing fans on like this.

He' s had a long, and tough career carring all those bad Wolves teams. He will only be a shadow now on. Next will be PP, and Ray. 30's old for basketball. I know KG is not tradeable in the off- season with his salary, but we need a trade like we made for him.

We thought the Pats lied about injuries, well the Celtics took it to new level. You don't think the playoff tickets had anything to do with it???

I feel your pain. Having said all that, HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!. Chances for a repeat went from slim to NONE!!! Doc Rivers can't "motivate" this team back to the finals, you're DONE without KG!! Its a wrap, sent all that young talent away just for 1 ring!?! Guess Danny Ainge isn't exec of the year anymore now is he??? This is sweet payback for Laker fans, even though we won't play the Celtics again til next season, cause you guys will be thru in May (might not make it past Chicago). How funny is it that the Lakers were missing their starting center last year and made it to the finals where we got whooped. Nobody had sympathy for us then, and we didn't make any excuses. Lets see how many excuses Boston fans come up with when you get handled in the first or second round... Time for you guys to rebuild...AGAIN!! LOL, LMFAO repeatedly!!! LOL like that guy at the end of the Thriller video!!!!

  1. I think the officials would have steered us to a Kobe LeBron final anyway... the officiating this year in big games against those teams seems to have been decidedly one way. Let me see- Lebron goes to the basket with the game on the line with 5 seconds left in game 7... Does anyone seriously think he isn't going to get a whistle?
This team has all kinds of guts, and can overcome anything on any given night, but asking to go through LA and Cleveland w/out a healthy KG is just too much. But the guy calling for Doc's head--you are a total idiot. Doc has nothing to do with this process. KG and the medical staff decide when he can give it a try.. All Doc can do is to work with what he has, and I think he's done a masterful job. Was anoyne not proud of the Pats last season? Well, this team has just as much guts, and they'll go down swinging if they go down at all..

I hate to feel this cynical, but you have to wonder if this wasn't prolonged due to upper mgt asking Doc to not say anything until X-number of tickets were sold for the playoff games.

The Cavs and Lakers teams are even much stronger this season than last season. Heck, I don't even think the Celtics can beat the Orlando Magic if they meet in round 2, the San Antonio Spurs or even the Portland Trailblazers, if they win the Western Conference title. See you guys next season. Hold on, this might be another 20 year drought.

Is he honestly trying to say that after all this time and all the revised dates he's given us for KG's return, Rivers now says this is the first time he's bothered to watch his star player? Don't get me wrong, I know he has a team to coach and trainers normally look after injuries, but COME ON!!! If stringing everyone along wasn't bad enough, this statement is an insult to everyone's intelligence. The organization has been totally dishonest regarding this situation.

As far as I can tell the Celtics haven't lost yet, there's still games to be played and we still have Paul and Jesus on the team. Now it's time for Big Baby and Leon to step it up and earn their big contract for next year. Just play the games and let the chips fall.

One other thing: Sports are all about entertainment, if the team loses, enjoy it for what it was and move on. A lot of people act as though their happiness depends on the team winning.

Put him under the knife ASAP so that this lingers into next year as little as possible. You're kidding yourself if you think a player of Garnett's age and style of play won't be at risk of never being the same again.

Do you really think Doc was going to show his hand before the season ended? You guys must be some CRAP poker players. Even if he knew KG was out, he doesnt owe that information to anyone until it is necessary to give it out.

The Celtics most certainly can win without KG...but it makes things harder on them. Baby and Powe have been monsters lately, and there is no one on the Bulls that can cover Pierce or Ray Allen. As they continue on, it would be tough to
beat Cleveland or LA without KG - but it most certainly can be done. We blew out Cleveland a few weeks ago in Boston without him.

Now is the time to see who the REAL CELTICS FANS are. Any of you bandwagon idiots that just found the team last season, feel free to get off at the next stop. And no true fan wants to win when the other team is playing without all their horses. I wish the Celtics the best even though I have been a Celtic hater for more than forty years. The Lakers played last year without Bynum and Ariza, and they made the finals. Maybe the Celtics will do the same without Garnett.

Maybe not, but how many of you trash talked them last year during the first two rounds of the playoffs (remember the Hawks? and that was with KG).
Let the other teams write the Celtics off, but Celtic fans shouldn't. Play the game and see what happens. Enjoy, regardless of what happens it wont change the unemployment rate, or spur a quicker economic recovery, or bring world peace, or, well, you get the idea.

  1. I think the Celtics will make it to the Conference Finals. We are a better more experienced than last year as a team as a whole. Powe, Perkins, Big Baby, House and Rondo's game have elevated. Tony Allen is back and hes been playing good since his return. He is one of the teams best defenders. Steph is playing good ball. The whole team is playing good in KG's absents. If Powe and Davis keep playing the way the have during the 2ND half of the season than I think we have a good chance to get by Orlando. I give them a 50% chance to beat Orlando. I think the Cavs will kill us though. But anything can happen in the playoffs. I'm no worried about scoring points I'm worried about consistency on defense. This team has big heart. Orlando doesn't really scare me. In both the games we lost to them this year they had a 20 point plus leads in the 3RD and the Celtics game back and the Magic almost blew it. The Celts cant get into slow starts with 15point 1st Quarters especially on the road in the playoffs. They also need to play defense through out the whole game and not just in spurts. We also cant turn the ball over. I'm not getting my hopes up but I will not be surprised if they make it deep in the playoffs or even to the finals. To me it makes the playoffs more intriguing to me and everyone else to see how they handle themselves after this blow and if they keep there eye off the ultimate goal. Kevin isn't coming on the court and they need to stay focused. Go C's.

Powe, Davis and Marbury of the bench will step up..I am so sure about it..Paul Pierce took the c's far alone by himself sometime ago, why cant he do it with Ray allen, Rondo and others?? I know they can.. We beat Cleveland without Garnett cuz Powe showed up big time. We have our chances, I am so positive..Love the C's..

You are so right. Opk3 (Opie to his friends) did say that the keltic fanatics would never use an injury as an excuse. I think that perhaps the keltic fans are waking up to the reality of their organization. We critics and sageful writers have been saying this for a long time. They lied to you and may still be conning you, keltic fans. I wouldn't be surprised if we say a "Willis Reed Moment" in the playoffs. The organization may feel it needs some Hollywood drama to inspire this team. I guess that makes you the boston Fakers.

Now Cleveland will be super well rested heading into the finals.

Not cool to string us along like that for 2 months, maybe if he was scoped right away, he could have been back at like 80% by playoffs. Good thing I held out to get playoff tixs, now i can just watch it at home, not worth it. They will make a run, but only past the Bulls.

We'll just get by past the Bulls, Orlando is gonna smoke us! Powe, Baby and Moore are good, but only second best next to a healthy KG...KG was a huge presence inside, now we just have Perk and Powe..and they are not KG, close but as Red would say it, NO CIGAR !!

Posted by Steve April 16, 09 11:49 AM
  1. The Cs probably weren't going to get past Cleveland with KG, but if by some minor miracle the Cs (with KG) were to beat the LeBrons, they would have been decisively beaten by the Lakers who are without question the best team in the league-a very different team with Alexander Bynum- despite their second best record. Now it's back to the drawing board because the big three are, come the start of next season, if they aren't already, the old three. It would have been much better if this had all happened several months ago and then the Cs would be higher up in the draft order due to a far less impressive W/L record then they now sport.

  1. As a physical therapist & watching the injury back in Feb I said meniscus right away. Very easy diagnosis... Came down with all his weight on that knee... knee didn't move in any way to tear a ligament.
Could have made a return if we went to surg that week but would be 75-90% depending on extent of injury, infection, swelling etc.
Sometimes people get around okay with a tear & can make it through the rest of the season so they gave it a shot.
S happens I guess Bruins vs. Canadiens will be awesome!

It's obvious to me that the injury was much worse than they were saying or led the fans to believe!! The current organization has been totally dishonest regarding the KG situation. The blame must be shared among Danny, Doc and KG!!! I hope this was not a plot to sell playoff tickets or a CONSPIRACY--LEBRON v. KOBE FINALS!!! I won't be interested and certainly won't watch grimace ball!!! The one-on-one game (Lebron & Kobe shoots every time down the court)!!!! We won't trully know whether the c's with a healthy KG would have or would not have win against the cavs or lakers and that is sad for the NBA, because the excitement is dampened after such a great run during the regular season (C's Cavs, Lakers). The CELTICS LEGACY will be filled with DECEPTION & LIARS, if KG can't make it back at some point during the playoffs.

They do have 11 other players.) I saw a hell of a game last night in which none of the big three played. Rondo and Perk played sparingly and they still won. So lighten up!! Let 'em play the games and decide the outcome on the floor, not in the press.
Hats off to the Celtics organization for putting the best interest of their player ahead of this misguided demand to win at all cost. Go Celtics, we still love ya!!

Not saying they would have won it all with Bynum, the Celts were the better team even if Bynum had played, just saying that ya gotta deal. BTW, this edition of the Celts is one-and-done ... KG's knees ain't gettin any younger, Allen is even more susceptible ... of course they've got their secret weapon: 'Big Baby' (WTF??!!) ... oh, and don't forget Marbury. 2. They don't owe any injury updates, we all knew KG wasnt going to be 100% this shouldnt be a shock at all! Now Glen and Leon can focus on their job not worrying about what their role is going to be, is KG playing?
    3. Who is throwing in the towel? This is still a very good basketball team...we have a tough road ahead but all we can do as fans is show up to the home games and make as much noise as possible and give them home court advantage for every home game.

Are we a better team than LA? CLE? no.......but can we beat them in a 7 game series if we get there............well that's what the thrill of the playoffs is all about......

  1. All the negative crap from way too many of you makes me sick. I moved away for years and I realize how negative Boston fans have become. We were always positive we would win, even if we stunk. Did any of you ever here of the idea that all your negativity has a negative effect on your team. they end up playing for themselves.
why can't they win it all? They have right now Pierce and Ray, 2. That's as good a combo as in the NBA. their point guard is awesome both ways, center is solid, and they have two or three power forwards they can throw out there to beat on the opposition. They have an excellent point and shooting guard along with Tony Allen who is playing both ways at a very high level right now.

Even if the Celtics weren't "honest", or whatever, I just finally got season-tickets last week (after waiting for YEARS) and , would rather have a season of great games next year that a further-injured KG this year. I don't regret my decision. In fact, I'm hoping that some people will jump off the bandwagon so the games are more fun again. I have nosebleed seats, but it KILLS me to see all those losers who sit behind the basket who don't know to jeer at free throws or those idiots who "twist and shout" when the celts are down by ten!!!

  1. You know... I'm Celts fan and I hate the Lakers and the Cavs, but if Kobe went down last week or LeBron got hurt in the first round, I wouldn't be happy about it. Being a sports fan doesn't mean taking joy in the injuries of other players, that makes no sense. So for all of you children out there on this post laughing about this injury, spend your time rooting for your own team, you'll enjoy your life more.

Secondly, the notion that this should make us think twice about the trade for KG and Ray to win a title is beyond moronic. we were NEVER going to win a title with Rondo, Pierce, Jefferson, Gomes, Perk, Delonte et al. We would have been a good team (maybe a 4 or 5 seed in the East), but by the time Jefferson rounds into a top 10 player in the league (which isn't a guarantee) Pierce will be enough past his prime that the Celts still wouldn't have had enough. We would have a perennially strong team that never would have been able to get over the hump, while at the same time never getting the opportunity to gather top talent through the draft (sound familiar?).

I'll take what we ended up getting any day of my life. There's still a shot next year, plus the title last year, plus a 62 win season this year. There will be opportunities this offseason and the next to supplement the roster and continue to build for the future around the young core on this team (Rondo, Perk, Baby, Powe, Walker).

Things could be a great deal worse. Let's see how far the T-Wolves go over the next couple of years. Anything short of a title in the next six years and the trades Boston made were a no-brainer.

Posted by tdawg April 16, 09 05:26 PM
  1. Dumbass LAKERS fans celebrating KG's injury. I'd rather see MY LAKERS against Boston (defending Champions) with a healthy lineup then breeze through an injury riddled opponent. Don't celebrate your opponents misery. Welcome the challenge they bring you. It makes winning all the more sweeter.

    btw... Ainge sucks.

  1. How about blaming the Globe for some of this? A newspaper isn't supposed to just report what the Celts is spoon-feeding it. The point of being a reporter is to dig deeper - not take no for an answer - and try to find out what the REAL story is.

The Globe has allowed the Celts to give you, the fans, just exactly what they wanted to give. Nothing more. It was OBVIOUS there was more to this story and has been all along, but all you got from the Globe was the same spin the Celts were giving you. Reporting isn't about simply reacting to stories. Reporting is about being PROACTIVE and doing your own work and your own digging to find the truth. And in this regard, the Globe has royally failed you, the reader and Celtics fan. Piss poor job by the Globe on this entire story

You will never have another ballplayer like him come through Boston! The least you could do is appreciate what he gave you and encourage him to get well! 1. Doc should have known better.
The Celtics were not very deep to begin with. Yet they were playing the "big 3" for 35 minutes a game. They started the season on fire, playing like the playoffs had just started. There are 82 games in a season. You have to preserve your starters, especially if they are old.

And as for other Laker losers that say making fun of the keltics is not a Laker fan, you must be a Keltic fan cause real LA fans never back da keltics in any situations.

  1. As I've said in previous blog entries, "Something was rotten in Denmark" with the way this whole KG situation was handled. I agree the Celtics could have handled this better than they did, but you knew something was wrong when KG didn't come back after such a long time especially knowing the type of dedicated professional he has been throughout his career. Obviously it looks pretty bleak right now, however I think most of the Celtics knew he wasn't coming back, so hopefully they are mentally prepared to do their best, and let's see what happens. It's a sad day in Celticland when Danny goes down with a heart attack and we lose KG.

  1. I also wanted to add that I guess you can't expect much more from demented Laker fans who relish in players getting hurt. As we know, the only thing you're proving is that you have no class, but we already knew that. But maybe that's why we have 17 championship banners, and you don't. Uh, let's think about this one. Where would the Lakers or Cavs be if Kobe or Lebron had gone down like KG? I can guarantee you they would not be sitting in the number 1,2, or 3 seed. It's called "The Heart of a Champion." Perhaps karma will prevail, because you know
    "What comes around, goes around!"

  1. I dont understand how real fans can give up so easily...My prediction is that all of your pessismism and that of the national media and audience fuel guys like Leon Powe, Big Baby and get ready for this, Stephon Marbury to play out of their minds and compensate for the Garnett loss. Furthermore, tell me why it is not possible for Allen, Pierce and Rondo to have their "A" games every night? I still feel confident saying that if they do, it could be a fun ride...

All of these negative voices...no doubt the same faint of heart that gave up on the Red Sox 3 games back of the Yanks before they rallied to win their first title...Come now...Relish the challenge, the adversity and the chance to witness another chapter written about the greatest sports town in the world...

  1. I've always had great respect for KG, but karma is a biotch. Last year the Lakers were missing Bynum and Ariza, and it hurt them. Now the tables have turned and the Lakers are 100% healthy and coming in 14 deep!!! As I took a break from LMFAO, I realized something... The Celtic organization is up to something. Either they held off from telling the real story to sell playoff tickets, or they are in cahoots with the league office to create some sort of Paul Pierce, wheelchair bullsh*t drama somewhere down the line. I'm leaning towards the first one, cause I just don't see them holding KG out when they know, as all you "real" Celtics fans know, this Boston team is not as good as last years. But anyway, as everybody has said they wouldn't have beaten LA or CLE this year anyway. LA gave them their first taste of things to come on Christmas Day, and since then their confidence has been shaken. Boston got their collective asses handed to them in Cleveland TWICE this season (with and without KG), and some of you have the delusional audacity to say they can make it to the Finals???

You replace PJ Brown with Mikki Moore, and Sam Cassell with Stephon Marbury, LOL. From proven winners to a proven assh*le and the illegitimate love child of the Predator and a clingon. What about James Posey, who's supposed to fill those shoes. Posey was the last piece of the puzzle that pushed you over the edge last year. Please don't tell me Tony Allen is gonna give you the same effort. The Lakers record against BOS and CLE this year (drumroll.....) 4-0. Last year BOS swept the Lakers in the reg season, and look what happened. Face it, its the Lakers year, the stars are aligned, we've already beaten our potential Finals opponent convincingly, whooped them on their home floor while Kobe was puking, in the 6th game of a 6 game, two-week road trip without Bynum. (damn)

Get well soon to Danny Ainge, member of the last respectable Celtics dynasty with the REAL big three of Bird, McHale, Parish. I said dynasty cause those teams actually one multiple titles in the '80s (not as many as the 5 spot the Lakers put up but still much respect). Those Celtic teams were the real deal, this edition not so much. Got respect for KG, Shuttlesworth and PP (only cause I'm an Inglewood native too), but your squad is on the downturn. Danny's got some work to do when he recovers, the Lakers have a young nucleus that's poised to battle the Lebrons for the title the next 3-5 years. Boston, on the other hand, is aging fast, trying to replace veterans with young upstarts and hoping for some luck. Shouldn't have fired the leprechaun, LOL. I'm gonna pour out a little champagne for you guys in June, and you guys do all you can to avoid going from champion to clusterf*ck. I'll be the guy in the L.O. #7 jersey standing on top of the black SUV parked on S. Figueroa!!! Thats where we end the parade, right in front of STAPLES, while Boston fans watch highlights from the parade you TiVO'd last year. LMFAO once again!!!!!

And Laker fans: Please stop embarrassing yourselves talking up Bynum like he was Kareem or Wilt. He is not the reason you lost the title last year. He is not the reason you'll win it this year. He is not a former MVP or Defensive Player of the Year.

  1. Just watched the practice interviews of Doc, Pierce, and Ray, and they feel for KG, but Ray and Pierce truly don't seem phased. Listening to Pierce talk and watching his eyes as he's talking, he really believes they can make it to the Finals again. He has this look. Come to think of it the look on his face has been different lately in a lot of these games. He'll make one of those 'He did not just do that' plays on offense and there's just a blank look on his face coming down the other end. It's that same look he had in the Cleveland series last year. Expressionless, like an assassin. It's like he's not even hearing the crowd. Man, the odds are seriously against them without KG. How can they possibly raise their defense to the elite level it has to be at for them to have a chance? But this guy looks like nothing is going to stop him. It would be absolutely amazing if they make it back in the Finals in June.

  1. Another thing... for all of you 3 year old Laker fans who want to compare the loss of KG to the loss of Bynum last season and claim that the Lakers would have won with Bynum... you're absolutely right. Losing a 14 year NBA vet and 12 time all-star, defending defensive MVP of the league and former NBA MVP IS the same as losing a 3rd year player who has never made an all-star team, is just barely beginning to become a legitimate starter in the league and is already VASTLY overrated.

Wow you Laker fans are brilliant.

And, for all you Laker fans who think you'll be battling it out with the Cavs for the championship for the next "4-5 years"... that's hilarious. Kobe has already docked well over 1,000 NBA games on his body. Your window as a title contender is about another season or two (tops!)... then Portland and eventually Oklahoma City will pass your carcass on the way to Western Conference domination for the next decade.

Pierce came back on the 2nd half made a 3ball SWISHHH! and fouled. How about the game int he finals of LA and BOS, Ray Allen went to the lockers and at the 3rd qtr came back and made his presence felt. Guys, are we missing the picture here? Boston is boston, the guys have matured, baby davis, house, powe and even marbury, moore have shown their moneysworth. Helped me win one trophy, although the best biking team had one of their guys out, but that's another story. Over the years, I kept patching and glueing the tire bladder back together, until one day all the nail holes and thorny piercings just became too much. Sadly, I retired that bike, and could only wish and pray that Santa would bring me a new one. Unfortunately, for me, the story ends with my parents not being able to afford a new BMX racer, and me not believing in Santa Claus anymore. For years KG had a very healthy career, but lots of wear and tear.

  1. Classless-Great points-it is pretty sad that they are still using that pathetic Bynum excuse lol..I wonder what their excuse will be this year...?? If the Lakers are fortunate enough to get to the Finals, it will be fun watching them choke again. Whether it's the Cavs or my Celtics, they just don't have what it takes. Sorry Fakers' fans, just telling the truth. 303 comments-wow, the trolls really ate this one up..lol

  1. "He is not the reason you lost the title last year. He is not the reason you'll win it this year. He is not a former MVP or Defensive Player of the Year."

Classless, he's 21. Give him a year or two and he'll start gathering the awards. And, as for last year's finals, the stats back it up. With Bynum's it is absolutely a different series. So stop making a fool of youself.

  1. Nick E. - the Lakers were getting to the Finals whether your Celts were there or not. The reaction you are seeing is amusement as your franchise quickly retreats back to its rightful place in mediocrity.

KobeWears - look around, fool. Your blog is a wasteland of Celtic excuses now. Your "friend" opk3 couldn't stop telling us how there would be no excuses if the Celtics were shorthanded and unable to defend their title. But anyone who has read a post or two on this blog knew otherwise. Right, KobeWears?

  1. Why don't you loser Laker fans give it up with writing on the Celtics' blog. Just the fact that you continue to do so indicates how pathetic you are and that you're actually in awe of such an awesome franchise as the Celtics. It must be because you've lost to us so many times that you can't get it out of your system. Your pathetic comparisons of losing KG to Bynum are ludicrous as you try to compare Bynum to a former MVP, 12-time All-Star, Defensive Player of the Year, not to mention a member of the All-NBA and All-Defensive team. It just shows how little you know about the game as well as Nick's incorrect stats regarding KG never being a former MVP(03-04) and last year's Defensive Player of the Year.

  1. Van Exel,
The problem with your argument is if I agree the "stats back it up" when it comes to Bynum, then please affix an asterisk next to Cleveland or LA if they win the title this year. I'll gladly come back next year and tirelessly remind you that "with Garnett it's a different series." And I love your line about Bynum "gathering awards". You should do stand-up....

  1. IF YOU BELIEVE IN THE C's they will win this...THEY CAN AND TYEY WILL...

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are allstars and can really make a differenc...

THE CELTICS WILL HAVE A REPEAT!!!

  1. The "Second Line" has officially started for the Celtics... Que the jazz band, you guys are on the way out. Derrick Rose drops 36 on you in his first playoff game!!!!!!! You can't win without KG's presence in the middle. You can't stop anybody, you can't even hold opponents under 100 anymore. Every time the Celtics scored, the Bulls came right back, most times straight to the basket with Rose or Tyrus Thomas. Now homecourt doesn't mean anything, you've got to win in Chicago to avoid losing to the 7th seed.

Who the hell said that? I didn't. Get your comments straightened out, then try again champ.

  1. Hey Classless, you don't think Bynum will be an all-star? Let me refresh you on what his game looks like when he is fully recovered and healthy. In the five games played before he got injured this season...

    27p/15r
    24/14
    15/11
    23/14
    42/15

And, let me remind you again, he's 21 years old. No need to tell me - I know I'm right.

Posted by Nick Van Exel April 20, 09 11:26 AM
  1. Oh, and Classless? I would affix an asterisk to the title this year, but unfortunately no one outside Boston thought of the Celtics as a legitimate title contender this year.

  1. Why are you looking at this thread? This is old news. There has been much more recent ill will for this team. Garnett should just retire. My reasoning is that he is dirty and cheap, and uses foul language which gives the league a bad rep. Lakers would not have lost with a healthy Bynum last year. Changes entire dynamic as you are now quite aware of.
