Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff May 6, 2009 02:32 PM

A pair of Celtics were honored by the NBA today for their defensive prowess.

Forward Kevin Garnett was named to the NBA All-Defensive first team, while point guard Rajon Rondo was named to the second team.

Garnett, the league's Defensive Player of the Year a season ago, received 35 votes, 13 for the first team. Rondo received 23 votes, four for the first team

Celtics center Kendrick Perkins received four votes, one for the first team, to finish 19th in the voting.

Orlando's Dwight Howard, who was named the Defensive Player of the Year last week, edged the Lakers' Kobe Bryant as the leading vote-getter by a 55-53 margin.

Here are the first and second teams, along with vote totals:

Kobe Bryant,LA Lakers, 53
LeBron James, Cleveland, 47

  1. On topic: For the most part, just as the refs favor the big names (travelling = four steps), this list favors them. I don't think so many recognized "stars" are really the ten best defensive players in the league. (The exceptions: Rondo, Battier; Artest is known as a defensive "star.")

  1. Perk is definitely an All-Defensive player. I know I'm biased, but gooooood night! I hope Perk takes this snub personal and has heckuva game tonight. What!

  1. Ummmm...Was Somebody smoking? This IS the list for the best DEFENSIVE players right? What in the SAM hell is Kobe Bryant doing there before Rondo? If this were the OFFENSIVE team, I'd understand. Kobe is known for alot of things, but defense? Come on!

  1. Perk should be on that list. This past season, Perk was a better defender than Tim Duncan.

  1. dude that was really disrespectful you have to WAIT later on and find out. congratulations to rondo and kg. very well deserved. rondo should of been all 1st team, but atleast his dream came true to make an all defensive team. I'm really happy for him. I cant wait to hear his reaction to this. he must be stoked!

  1. Paul in Vegas,
The odds are not in your favor...

It's pretty obvious by now that the C's need to be on the brink of elimination before Gary does live blogs on here.

  1. It says a lot when you have a good defender at the point guard position, the games hardest position in the game to guard.

It says a whole lot more when you have a guard like that on a team known for being such a big force inside.
Meaning both lines of defense are basically covered.

That's why it felt soooooo goooood beating the crap out of you on x-mas , and then aging in Bean Town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt, by this point, IF we both make it to the Finals together once again, we'll all be nutz out of our minds. I don't think that Boston has a shot against Orlando or Cleveland, but man wouldn't that be sweet?????

  1. I don't think Garnett played enough games to earn it. It was nice to see Rondo there.

  1. Chris Paul? Are they rewarding him for all the steals he gets? In terms of a pure defender at the PG spot, I don't know if Paul qualifies as 1st team.

  1. I think both lists are pretty well selected, with garnet being the only guy that seems to have really got on there because of his name. but honestly he and the celts were so good in the first half, and played such intense d it's is kind of an honor to the whole team cause he's the leader of the d.

  1. Perkins is a better low post defender then garnett. Rondo can't guard anybody, and although Chris Paul gets alot of steal, he can't stay in front of anyone either. Dwayne Wade can't guard a my grandmother, and Kobe when he wants to be can be good, but is not cosistent enough to be on the first team. I love how the NBA fucks over the real defensive leaders like perkins because he's considered a role player and not a real star. By the way, the notion that steats mean your playing defensive is ridiculous. Paul, and Rondo both can't guard anyone. They gamble a lot and therefore get steals, but 9 times out of ten, there man beats them and guys like perkins end up getting the fouls because they come over to help. Please stay in front of somebody Rondo and try to guard them. Alston at 33 blows by him. What a JOKE.

The real defensive first team would be

    Perkins
    Howard
    Artest
    Lebron
    Billups
