Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was named a first-teamer on the NBA's All-Defensive team today, joining Kobe Bryant (G), LeBron James (F), Gerald Wallace (F), and Dwight Howard (C). Rondo, who makes the team for the first time, received 23 first-place votes, second only to Howard's 28. The team is voted on by the coaches.
Rondo led the NBA this season with 189 steals, an average of 2.3 per game (Monta Ellis was second in the league with a 2.23 average). Celtics coach Doc Rivers allowed Rondo to gamble more this season, and Rondo capitalized, using his long arms, his giant hands, and his athleticism to set the Celtics' single-season steals record.
The second team of NBA All-Defensive players for this season includes Thabo Sefolosha (G), Dwyane Wade (G), Anderson Varejao (F), Josh Smith (F), and Tim Duncan (C).
