With the news that Paul Pierce has opted out of his contract with the Celtics and will become an unrestricted free agent, we're asking fans if they'd like to see Pierce return to the Celtics or sign elsewhere.

Also in today's Globe, Gary Washburn takes a look at the players who could change the landscape of the NBA, and possibly the face of the Celtics, as the free agency frenzy begins at midnight.

Today on Boston.com, Tony Massarotti asks if the Pierce decision may be a blessing in disguise. Coming up around 12:30 on Globe 10.0, Chris Gasper will provide his take on the situation. And we've got a photo gallery of Pierce's Celtics career through the years.

From the archives, we take a look back at Pierce talking to the Globe's Julian Benbow in December, when the Celtics captain indicated he'd like to stay in Boston:

I'm so glad I was able to sign an extension that year [2008]. I was so close to testing free agency. And then I just knew I was here to stay, that Boston is my city and I love it.

It's funny because I asked Kevin (Garnett) where he wants his number retired. He's going to be one of the greatest players to ever play this game. He started in Minnesota. He won his championship in Boston. The same thing with Ray. He spent so many years in Milwaukee.

And it's like where do you want to be remembered?

I've been in an amazing position to say that I'm going to be linked 100 percent to the Boston Celtics.

To say that I've played with only one franchise, and accomplished what we have, it's almost like a miracle. You don't see that any more.
