Former NBA center Manute Bol died of complications from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, according to a family member who talked to the Washington Post.

He died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville on Saturday morning, according to Tom Prichard, an associate of Bol's, in an e-mail to the Associated Press. The former NBA center, known for his shot-blocking skill, was hospitalized in mid-May after returning from a trip to Sudan.

Bol, of Sudanese descent, was one of the tallest players in NBA history at 7-feet, 6-inches. He played for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat.

Bol dedicated his post NBA career to humanitarian efforts in his home country.
