Celtics captain Paul Pierce was too sick to practice today, so Delonte West, still recovering from a broken right wrist, took his place.

WALTHAM -- The Celtics were already thin, with five players dealing with injuries, but Paul Pierce was too sick to practice this afternoon, forcing Delonte West to step up and take his place even though he is still recovering from a broken right wrist.

"With Marquis [Daniels] going down and Paul absent today, I had to get on out there," said West, who broke his wrist in November and has just gotten back to catching and dribbling in the past three weeks. "It was sooner than I expected, but I definitely surprised myself. I was able to go full contact. Got down in there, scrapped around with the big guys a little bit. My conditioning was there. My timing was a little off. A lot of things working at the same time."

Coach Doc Rivers was said he expected Pierce to play tomorrow against the Lakers but wasn't entirely certain.

"I’m assuming he will," Rivers said. "We’ll find out tomorrow."
