MIAMI -- Paul Pierce is close to returning but the Celtics are being very cautious with his bruised right heel. Although coach Doc Rivers said Pierce looked better in workouts today, he was held out of tonight's game against the Miami Heat and will not play tomorrow against the New Orleans Hornets.

"He worked out yesterday and did some shooting today and he's feeling better, no doubt about that but he won't play tomorrow either, I can probably safely say that," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Then we'll wait and see and maybe the home opener (Friday vs. Detroit)."

Pierce was dressed in his uniform before the game but was placed on the inactive list along with Mickael Pietrus. The Celtics will not practice Thursday in Boston, so Pierce may get another day off in preparation for Friday.
