NEW YORK -- Paul Pierce didn't even give it a try pregame today at Madison Square Garden, he jumped off the team bus, walked to his locker with his full suit on and declared himself out for today's season opener against the New York Knicks with a bruised right heel.

Sasha Pavlovic will start in place of Pierce.

"I'm day-to-day," Pierce said. "I just want to be careful with this because it's a bone bruise. I can feel it every time I walk."

Pierce said he wants to play Tuesday against the Miami Heat and it's uncertain whether he will practice tomorrow in Miami. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he would have started Marquis Daniels if the Pierce injury was long term but he wanted to keep the bench intact.

Pierce has participated in one practice so far this training camp because of the sore heel, although he's been taking jumpers after practice.

"I haven't run up and down the court yet," Pierce said. "Maybe this will give other guys opportunities."

*The NBA has presented players with Skullcandy Headphones and some players such as Chris Wilcox, put them to immediate use.

*Mickael Pietrus will join the team tomorrow or Tuesday in Miami after his physical. Rivers said he had no concerns about Pietrus's right knee.

*Jeff Green is on the road trip, a nice gesture by the Celtics and an indication they plan to bring him back next season.
