NEW YORK -- The Celtics had until 5 p.m. Monday to waive the two players they carried with nonguaranteed contracts, and they let go second-round pick Kris Joseph and recently signed Jarvis Varnado on Sunday night, according to an NBA source.

Joseph had bounced between the Celtics and the Maine Red Claws of the D-League, and was in Maine when the move was made. Joseph averaged 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in 10 games for Maine.

Varnado was added when the Celtics lost Chris Wilcox indefinitely with a sprained wrist ligament but he played sparingly. Coach Doc Rivers said he admired Varnado's athletic ability Saturday but also called him "raw."

Joseph could potentially return under a 10-day contract. He is eligible to sign with another club once he clears waivers Monday. The Celtics now have 13 players on their roster, giving them some flexibility in case they decide to make a trade or add a free agent.
