The Celtics would be willing to pull of a trade for an elite player even without an assurance that he would sign with the team long-term, Danny Ainge told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich show Tuesday.
Danny Ainge just told us that he would be open to trading for a high caliber player in their last year without an agreement to an extension.— Toucher and Rich (@Toucherandrich) May 21, 2014
“I would contemplate that, yes,” said Ainge. “It would depend on the player and the risk, but sometimes you need to take some risks.”
Ahem, ahem, Kevin Love? The Timberwolves star is entering the final year of his deal and has told Minnesota he will not exercise his player option with the team after next season. The Celtics are among the teams interested in crafting a trade for Love, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.
The Celtics have the most to offer Minnesota in terms of future picks, but Love has shown no indications that he favors Boston over any other destination, and the current state of the franchise isn't exactly enticing. However, if Ainge is willing to pull off the deal anyway, it would make Love's wishes a moot point for now.
