Report: Rajon Rondo Has Told Celtics He 'Wants Out'

Point guard Rajon Rondo is entering the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics this season. The star guard admitted back in January that the prospect of free agency next summer intrigues him, but Rondo has publicly stated on multiple occasions this summer that his preference is to stay in Boston long-term.

Those declarations are now being called into question after ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan said in an Around The Horn segment that Rondo has told the team “he wants out.”

Jay King over at MassLive unearthed the video from a pre-show discussion in which MacMullan is being asked by Frank Isola about whether Rondo will be the next big trade chip in the NBA to be moved.

"Oh, I hope so,” MacMullan said. “Just get it done. And it will happen because [Rondo’s] told them he wants out. And no one believes me, but that's the truth. I don’t see how you get 80 cents on the dollar for him. Tell me where."

MacMullan and Isola continued their discussion by running through a list of potential trade destinations for Rondo. MacMullan mentioned several teams including New York and Sacramento that are interested in the guard, but said teams either lack the assets (New York) to acquire him, or Rondo has made it clear he won’t sign long-term (Sacramento).

The problem with any potential trade involving Rondo is that because there are so many talented point guards in the NBA right now it is a challenge to find a team with both a need at the position and the assets to send back a sizable return to Boston.

MacMullan also commented on Rondo's future in Boston in a June piece over at ESPN centered on Boston's pursuit of Kevin Love:

Remember, there's still no guarantee Rondo is sticking around for any of this. He does not want to languish with a young rebuilding team in the prime of his career. Can't say I blame him. He wants to play in a big market, which limits trade destinations for Boston, and he wants a max deal. He has not given the Celtics any guarantees he's in for the long haul.
