Mock draft (take 2)
I promised another one of these a while back, and with the draft fast approaching, I think it’s time to give it another shot.
I’ll preface my mock draft this time by stating that I am not basing it on any inside information. I don’t have Danny Ainge’s cell number stored in my phone. I haven’t taken any scouting trips to watch Andrea Bargnani play in Treviso. I’ve never played pickup basketball with Rudy Gay.
That being said, I have an unhealthy interest in this draft. I scour the Internet every day reading the newspapers, rumor sites, and mock drafts. I watched hundreds of college basketball games last year and have seen most of the projected first-rounders play multiple times. So while I’m by no means an expert, I hope that by compiling all of my research into a mock draft here it will be helpful for some people.
In my first mock draft (written on May 11, before the lottery order was set), I had the Celtics taking Marcus Williams with the seventh pick. Since that time we’ve learned that the Williams is likely among the players being considered by the Celtics, along with Randy Foye, Rajon Rondo, Shelden Williams, and J.J. Redick, among others. Ainge also suggested to the Globe’s Peter May that one of the projected top six players (Bargnani, Gay, Tyrus Thomas, LeMarcus Aldridge, and Adam Morrison) would slip down to the seventh spot, if Marcus or Shelden Williams were picked higher, for example.
I’m not changing my Marcus Williams prediction, but I will make an addendum. If Williams is gone, the Celtics will take Randy Foye, who has comparable offensive talent but is an inferior passer.
Here then, is the rest of my mock draft:
