Finals destination

Posted by Ian Rider May 30, 2008 11:18 PM

The Boston Celtics overcame all of the obstacles and setbacks that sprouted in the playoffs to make it to the NBA Finals for the first time in 21 years. Let's take a look at a few of the demons, large and small, that were excrcized in tonight's 89-81 victory over the Detroit Pistons...

  • The Celtics unseat the reigning Eastern Conference Champs in the Cleveland Caveliers and Lebron James in an epic Game 7 in the semis.

  • The Celtics win a Game on the road after going 0-6 to start the playoffs away from Boston.

  • Ray Allen shoots his way out of a dismal slump with back to solid offensive outputs, scoring 46 points in two games to close out Detroit.

  • Rajon Rondo couldn't finish games. Rondo may have hit the jumper of the night with his deep bucket with the shot clock running down.

  • The Celtics struggled to close out close games all postseason. The Celtics outscore the Pistons 29-13 in the final frame to close out the series and head to the NBA Finals.

  • Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Keving Garnett could never win the big games to get themselves past the Conference finals, and now the three of them have made it together.

My final comment: What a difference a year makes. In the coming weeks you'll hear that line attached to Kobe Bryant. Let's not forget the Lakers were in the playoffs last year, the Celtics were in the cellar.

I don't have any more to say tonight...let us know how you feel about your team being in the Finals in the comments below. I want to see the most comments that have ever been on this blog below. BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

    1. How about the fact that not only did we win on the road earlier in the series, but we won on the road to clinch it? Our first Game 6 win, and our first series win that didn't go seven games. I'd say that's progress.

P.S. Props to Leon Powe for putting in some quality minutes back when the game wasn't going our way. He was one of many that kept us in it.

    1. Say it again...what a difference a year makes. A stunning, improbable, fantastic ridiculous year. I mean how great is this for KG, the Truth and Ray? This is one of those rare occaisions that the hype of an incredible offseason is met by a reality that actually has been better. The Celtics are back in the finals to face LA guys. Please whatever you do.....dont wake me up.

21 years later and the Celtics are right where they left off in their last trip to the finals. They again have their historic arch-nemesis in the Lakers between them and banner 17. How fitting. The new All star Celtics against the Kobe MVP showtime Lakers . History tells us that we are in for a treat as this latest chapter in the greatest rivalry in NBA history plays out.

Thank you Wyc, thank you Danny, thank you Garnett, Pierce and Allen. You guys have done it. You have restored the basketball universe to its rightful order.

    1. I'm 25. I barely remember Bird on the way out. I've been diehard forever, grew up secretly loving bball as my first sports passion before baseball in Boston. This feelings wicked amazing! I pray my generations big 3 can BEAT LA!

    1. It really is unbelievable to think of how far this team has come this year. The Finals were the expectation after the trades, but how many things could have gone wrong? Actually, how many things HAVE gone wrong. And the C's have overcome all to find themselves in this position... although admittedly with a little help from the Pistons in Game 6 (They were horrible. Did Sheed know it was an elimination game?)

I'd be remiss not to mention the C's should have Game 6 won by 6 more points than they did, thanks to the worst call I have seen in not only the history of professional sports, but in all of amateur competition. Unbelievable.

    1. The Celtics are undefeated in the playoffs when Scalabrine dresses. Coincidence? NO! SCAL-A-BRINE **clap clap clapclapclap**

BEAT LA! What an incredible high...I haven't felt this great since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against New Jersey 6 years ago.

    1. Welcome back Celtic fan to the Finals. It has been some time since we have seen you, and as a Laker fan from way back, I am excited to have the two best franchises going head to head.

Although the Celtics hold the best record, and thus homecourt, don't expect the Lakers to come in and lay an egg. We are one of the best road teams in the league, and have beaten down the teams in the more competitive Western Conference.

Your team has yet to play the new look Lakers, with Gasol in the middle. The offense is tough to stop, and the Lakers defense is much improved from what they showed during the regular season.

I see the Lakers stealing game 1, and taking this series in 5 games. It will be a competitive struggle, with hard fought games, but ultimately the Kobe factor and the bench factor will be questions that the Celtics will not have an answer for.

    1. Hey Scoop. It's going more than 5 games. Celtics steal one in LA and win this thing in 6 or 7. Gasol will be neutralized by KG. Phil may want to stick Kobe on Rondo and I hope he does because Ray will light up Radmonovich.

Kobe is Kobe and will do great things. There is no question about that. But his supporting cast will come up SMALL and he will get frustrated and start heaving like he usually does.

We are hungry. We know our time is now. We will take this series in 6 or 7.

    1. WEll, th th th that's ALL FOLKS! Porky Pig would've been proud. I'm not as sweet or as kind as the Porkster. This team reminds me of a 1975 Olds with 455 4 barrel. "Dude you're a relic trying to compete in today's WWF Fixed NBA, where Brent Barry doesn't count enough to get a foul." Time to shake it up starting with Rasheed, and if you have to sweeten deal, pick another starter, maybe two. This isn't to say that some of our Exes won't flourish on someone else's floor, but they're simply no longer quasi Championship material as a core group. Need a new recipe. They were fun to watch and they won their games. But they couldn't back up all that ACT for going on 5 years. Which proves it was more talk than it was walk. Still not a fan of Flip. But he didn't take the shots, they did.

    1. Hey Boston, hello again. As an ex resident and an irish guy living and working in Boston the Celtics were my favourite team in New England. I was at the east conf finals in 2002 but this team is way better. This team is worthy of the Celtics tradition and they have the guns to beat LA, but LA has the guns to beat Boston also. Remeber Doc, Kevin, Paul, Ray and co... DEFENCE. Thays why got you 66 wins and got to the finals, thats what will win you the finals. Psyche out Kobe and his minions with suffocating, overpowering DEFENSE. That and you can borrow all the leprechauns you need from here!

BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

    1. Here come the Celtics. Coach Doc has the everybody peaking at the right time. Starting in Game 2 when Ray Allen finally started shooting and got over his slump; then in Game 5, Kendrick showed the Pistons why Ainge did not trade him. Raj Rondo clutch mid-range shooting and Posey's defense in Game 6 wrapped it up. The way the Celtics are playing, they'll massacre 'em LA Lakers.

Beware Odom: don't be taking bong rips during the Finals. Beware Walton: don't hang around with Odom too much; you had several bonehead plays that Mr. Kobe had to chew your rear on national TV.

This is the Finals coming up. Be ready, take notes; "The Truth" and Russell's mentor KG will win the 17th Banner this year (2008). It's been 17 years since the Celtics drafted Mr. Hollywood Rick Fox. The last 3 championships the Lakers won shouldn't (doesn't) count --3 Celtic rejects were on that team: Mr. Hollywood Rick Fox, Brian Shaw, and Travis Knight.

Year 2008 is the year the curse Mr. Hollywood left will be wiped out. The original Mr. Green (Leprechaun) has awaken and beside him are Mr. Red Aurebach, Reggie Lewis, and Len Bias.

      The C's in 5.

    1. I'm so proud of the celtics. I've been a celtic fan from 2000. That's when i stared watching basketball and it's great to see my favorite player; "The Truth" finally heading in the direction that he should have been, a finals showdown!!! And yo the Pistons fans who still think they are the better team than us, I hope you get to watch the finals in Hi Def. GOOOOOOOOOOO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!

    1. so proud of the team. so proud of pierce. he has matured before our eyes. still seriously trying to figure out how he controlled himself after Detroit Salvatore blew that call. personally, i think i would have had to punch him.

and for this to be against the lakers...wow. read marc spears' article about kobe vs. paul. what a spoiled baby kobe is. god he is so easy to hate. while pp was growing up in the inner city, kobe was toiling in italy and private schools. and phil jackson. what does he do besides sit stoned on the bench and twiddle his thumbs? he coaches superstar players, and runs another man's offense (tex winter's triangle) and eats up all the credit. man, re-learning laker hatred is not going to be so hard, after all!

    1. Celtics vs. Lakers. Defense vs. Offense. Phil vs. Red. Kobe vs. pierce. East vs. West. Things have been too easy for Kobe throughout the playoffs, that will change in this series. I have the Celtics in 6. Did anyone notice the 2-3-2 format. wierd???? do they always do this in the finals?
