For the first time in several seasons, the Celtics didn't finish the regular season in first place, trailing the Philadelphia 76ers by just one game. But behind sensational playoff efforts (five players averaging in double figures), Boston claimed another Finals victory in seven games over the LA Lakers. The victory was Red Auerbach's last as coach of the Celtics; Bill Russell would take over as player-coach the next year.
