Bill Russell through the years
Celtics coach and general manager Red Auerbach maneuvered to acquire Russell in 1956 in what would stand as the shrewdest move of his career. The Celtics owned the third pick in the '56 draft. Of the two teams picking ahead of Boston, the Rochester Royals didn't want to pay Russell's asking price of a $25,000 signing bonus, while the St. Louis Hawks coveted Celtics center Ed Macauley in a trade. Macauley was a St. Louis native and a six-time All Star. Auerbach agreed to trade him and rookie Cliff Hagen in exchange for the rights to draft Russell. The Celtics won the 1957 championship, the Hawks won in '58 . . . and the Celtics would win the next eight.
