Quidditch World Cup
When does a completely fictional, totally made up from scratch, not even real game become a legitimate sport? How about when it's played on 400 college campuses and holds its fourth World Cup? Vaguely combining bits of rugby, field hockey, steeplechase, and large amounts of whimsey, Quidditch was created in J.K. Rowling's fictional world of the Harry Potter children's novels. Here on earth it was first played by Middlebury College students, who didn't let the fact that they couldn't actually fly keep them from straddling broomsticks. Below is a small sampling of pictures from the 4th Quidditch World Cup held in New York's DeWiitt Clinton Park November 13-14. ( 10 photos total)

Nerd alert. Nerd alert. Seriously, what purpose does running with the broom between your legs serve? I get that they fly on brooms in the books. But these kids are on the ground.
