Observations, thoughts and other sometimes-not-true-but-should-be items:

  • Yes, the Jets have bragging rights. But I still do not want to be caught between Rex Ryan and Lady Foot Locker...
  • jdrewap.jpg

  • Did I miss J.D.Drew's retirement ceremony? I heard it was scheduled for the Deerfield Street Post Office to honor his ability to mail it in. Using J.D.'s formula, Carl Crawford needs just 1.972-humongous-playoff grand slams to earn his $142 million...
  • Drew sprained a knuckle on his middle finger. Also spraining a knuckle on their middle finger - Red Sox fans watching him play the last 5 years...
  • Ever since 2004, we've been told these "aren't our father's Red Sox." We're going to find out in the next few weeks if that's still the case...
  • Remember when the biggest pitching concern was whether or not they could keep Tim Wakefield happy...
  • Don't count out Tampa Bay. If the Rays hold a Fan Appreciation Night and he shows up, Evan Longoria ought to share some of his stash in a sign of appreciation...
  • newsign.jpg

  • Back to the Sox. Signs we should have seen Sunday on NESN: "Hi Mom! Send Pitching," "We paid $82.5 million for this!" "Where's my legroom?" "No Pink Hats," and "If I'm going to pay $100 to watch a pole - It should come with a dancer"...
  • Don't be surprised if the Red Sox try that last idea about the dancers - maybe between innings. Anything to enhance revenues...
  • You'll know it's bad when you start checking the Rays' score and the wild-card race before the Yankees' score and the AL East race...
  • Speaking of NESN - they reminded us of "Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain" - wondering if the same applied to Jon Lester and the Red Sox' rotation. I'm thinking it would be "Jon Lester and Pray for 20 More Games Against Luis Perez."...
  • There's a great column today about how UCF fans will honor BC alum and 9-11 hero Welles R. Crowther written by Mike Bianchi. It's a must-read and the feel-good story of the day...
  • dariusbutler.jpg

  • The Pats cut Darius Butler. Most upset: the Jets. Tom E. Curran notes that despite the issues concerning Bill Belichick's draft history, the Pats get talent in many ways and Belichick doesn't have to answer to anyone when he cuts a high pick. It must be nice to be head coach and de facto GM - not to mention Field Marshal, Supreme Commander and Dark Lord of the Sith...
  • Chad Ochocinco is doing pretty good in the roommate department without anyone's help...
  • Tiger Woods had lots of free time this summer, so his girlfriend gave him a honey don't list?...
  • It could be time to replace the NFC West with the SEC West...
  • If Albert Haynesworth, Shaun Ellis and Vince Wilfork all jumped at the same time, we may tilt the earth enough off its axis to solve global warming...
  • shaqcake.jpg

  • When the NBA season starts, Shaq joins Charles Barkley in the TNT booth. They have a new sponsor: Food. Wide-screens are not optional...

Today in Boston Sports Misery: Sept. 7, 1935 - The Red Sox lose 5-3 to the Cleveland Indians as Joe Cronin hits into a triple-play with the bases loaded to end the game. Boston finished 78-75, a mere 16 games behind AL champion Detroit. And those Tigers didn't even have Justin Verlander.

Time for your vote: The debate rages on who hae earned our first annual "Negative 10th Player Award?" Drew? Crawford? Dice-K? John Lackey? Theo?
